Heroes of Newerth (Dota Standalone)

This is essentially a Dota clone but in a standalone client made by S2 games (Savage devs). All the items are the same and a lot of the heroes have been copied (some new, some altered)

If you've played Dota, this is a much more streamlined and polished version of it. It runs great, has great community features (steam community like menu and chat system - also ingame voip) and is completely lag-free (no more host advantage).

However, it does still have some downsides of Dota - the community has plenty of dickheads and it's not 100% balanced

The game is still in beta and you need to get in by invite. They have been sending out waves of invites every so often. I have 5 left. I'd prefer to give them to Dota players.

Played some of this the other day. It is a better version of dota but on the same hand it is exactly the same as dota.

League of Legends improves on the game type and has a lot of new stuff that makes it way more interesting.

I've played five matches now and I like it. Only thing they couldn't fix from dota was the ****ing community... I mean players that don't know anything else than the basic slang words of dota turn in to assholes. And this happens even in the noobs only games... I mean what the ****. I join a game whats meant for beginers and then I get blamed for being a noob *insert facepalm*. Seems like where the dota scene passed the asshole test they failed the IQ test :/

The other thing is when the game name says "NOOBS ONLY MATAFAKAS" then five members of some random clan join the game and during midgame the score says 45-0... Oh yes, noobs only, maybe they thought the noobs only part meant the other team.

Got to play a few matches myself last night. It's really fun. It plays like DotA, I'm still getting adjusted to the different names and pictures for the same things.
I like how there are different maps to fight on.

Bakurei is right about the game being difficult for beginners. I was introduced to DotA through LANs with friends so they helped me learn it quickly but there is such a steep learning curve that it takes a while for new people to get what's going on.
I've been trying to help a friend learn how to play and he gets called a noob all the time. At least in HoN there are options like having a noob only game to hopefully exclude the more advanced players.
