But, I just realized that its the weekend. Most corperate people dont work on the weekends. So we sould probably have gold by mon or tues if they accepted the RC. Gawd. Cannot wait for this game.

Surprisingly no, there has not been an abundance of posts telling us that it's the weekend.

omg enough with the 'going gold' specualtions plz!!!

I just hope the games realy good when we finaly get our mitts on it.

Developers in crunch time don't just knock off at 5pm on a Friday.

He's talking about the testers at Vivendi. They could get weekends off. Although Half-Life was declared gold on a Saturday.

The best thing is to just wait and see. If we haven't heard anything by Wednesday then it's safe to assume that the first RC was rejected.

How do you know if VALVe doesn't work on weekends?

Developers and Vivendi are not in the same pool. Because Vivendi have to release games, reproduce them, etc. Its an every day occurance for them, not a lifes work, in the case of valve. They might leave some computers on playing demos and what not but I highly doubt there are people there testing it.

I asked the question in another thread, but it was hijacked (actually it was just a pointless thread):

Has anyone confirmed that "72 hours" means 24hrs/day for 3 days, as opposed to something like 8hrs/day for 9 days, or is it just plum obvious to everyone but me?

Just curious.

EDIT: looks like FISKER_Q just answered my question. Assuming that's true (still haven't seen it mentioned anywhere official-ish), it's very cool.

No they don't have weekends off, and they assure a presence of QA Testers 24/7 for all test machines.

Valve probably have had some time off after they finished the RC. Or as usual they don't come in on weekends.

This is going to be huge for the publisher they arnt going to just give testers the week end off.

I agree. I doubt Valve will give us the RC play by play. "Gabe Newell wrote to confiirm that, yes, RC-5 has been submitted." We'll probably have to make assumptions between here and gold.

For all we know, Vivendi wants to release the game closer to the holidays (good chance of it) and doesn't care if the game goes gold a few days earlier than humanly possible. Just because we want them to work non-stop to get the game to gold status, doesn't mean that they're going to make their employees work 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

The game has been delayed over a year...a weekend or two isn't going to make a difference.

It's really unrealistic to believe they'll accept the 1st RC..

uh no,,,,
but yes...

all the publishers that i deal with have testers 7 days a week, but not 24 hours every day. It's just a job like any other...40 hrs a week paid every 2 weeks. For you to thin that these people really devote more than the average worker would be deluding yourself.

It should take about 6-7 days to approve an RC complete from bugs, after the installer has been modified, and disk spacing/#'s has been firgured out. Remember that software is intelletual property, and subject to numerous "rules of conduct" so to speak.
There must be no plagerism, and no copyright infringement. The entire game must be played, from start to finish, for an ESRB rating. Certain things are not allowed, and the ESRB will go over the game with a fine-tooth comb before release. The game must be installed and played on almost every hardware configuration possible, to ensure stability(think p4-ati 9600/amd-nvidia 6800..mainly cpu/vidcard combos for the system requirements label on the back). this takes the longest time.
when that's all done, they have to edit the game for release in various regions, or if valve has done so, they have to go through each version of the game. it's much easier to do this after the ESRB has thier say. then it's pretty much gold.

regardless, we ARE gonna see the game soon. HL2 is one of the major reasons why vivendi took over sierra...so it won't be very long that they will keep this in their hands. I'm so excited that i don't want to install another game, for fear of forgetting the whole thing if HL2 comes out while i'm in the middle!

well i mean think about it, VALVe have put 6 years of their lives in this game. Playing it almost every day of it. If there were any "catastrophic showstopping" bugs, im sure they would have experienced it by now. And with the CS:Source beta, im sure that they are compiling patches for the game as we speak. Im pretty confident that either the First or Second RC will be accepted. Pretty much, I just really cannot wait for this damn game! lol.

Actually my older brother is currently working for Nevrax and he stays there sometimes 'till two or three AM. He worked this saturday from 12:00PM to 8:00AM too. During crunch time everyone works irregular hours, I know that for a fact =)

Worker? Who mentioned anything about a worker? A QA tester presence is there 24/7. I didn't say the same guy were playing the game 72 hours in a row.

They obviously have shifts.

They won't do that.

Took the words right out of my mouth :)

A few days ago (the 15th actually) I emailed Gabe about the RC Procedure, I didnt get any answers on how VU does QA testing, however he said:
With all the various languages and SKUs, it's about 100 CDs that we send. Eric Smith has a stack of 7 CD burners in his office.
They have to test every SKU available and every lanquage edition is a different SKU. It could also take a day for it to get to VU if they sent it by next day shipping. Thats every version of all the games including (but not nessescarily limited to) Half Life 2, Half Life Source, and Counter Strike Source. However i believe that they probably have as many people on this as possible because i saw an email from gabe saying that he saw no reason not to get it out as soon as possible. However if you look at all the games VU is currently working to get out the door at the moment that might lengthen the process.

Wow  that is a lot.

I doubt that 72 hour model piotr mentioned doesn't hold up much then.

Edit: 9 Different languages, HL2(4 discs, 1 CS: Source/HL: Source) and Collectors edition(4 discs, 1 CS: Source/HL: Source + extra content cd/dvd) = 90 cds + 9 DVDs.

Are you kidding me? You think if you were a tester for Vivendi...you get to work. You look at the schedule for the weekend.

"TEST HALF-LIFE 2"

Do you think you'd say pfft...I'm not coming in on a weekend for some silly game?

I'd test the shit out of it!

Yah, i'd stay there 24/7, maybe they won't, but i'd be done with the game in 3 days.i'd wear diapers, and continuosly smack myself silly just to stay in the seat :)

Oh me to. I would drop my life for the testing of HL2. But that might not be the case of the Q/A testers there.

I wouldn't want to test HL2. Because that would spoil the game for me when I get it.

I woudln't mind getting paid to do it :) Would be a nice way to get into the game business

It would be crappy for the testers on the later shifts though, you'd be going into the game mid way and miss a load of plot and have much more spoiled for you. In their position I would demand the first shift and refuse to leave the seat until I had finished the game.
