You want... To add another colony?

These forums have gone downhill ever since Valve bought them out and we began getting palmed off with 'news for news's sake' items like "the design on the front of an Xbox game box" while we wait for the next instalment of Valve lovelies.

Also I think most people lurk because the level of discussion has gone down so much. If I were a lurker and I read the first page of one to two word responses to this thread I wouldn't be scrabbling for the 'register' button.

Seriously, what crawled up your ass?

You're getting all kinds of news items. Who cares if we throw in something a little minute every once and a while.

If we have news from Valve, you'll see news from Valve. If you don't see news from Valve, it's because THERE IS NO NEWS FROM VALVE.

Simple. You're lashing out just for the sake of it.

You have a feedback forum, I gave feedback.

Being forcefed whatever Valve throws out is not journalism, it's PR. Since HL2.net got bought out by Valve I've watched it go from an HL2 fansite focused on all things HL2 to "this is news because it's related to Steam, which you need to run HL2, therefore having three news threads dedicated to Popcap games is perfectly fine".

I don't have a problem with the staff here in the slightest, you all volunteer and you get the news your given out to the readers. It's well written, usually error-free and it keeps us informed about (mostly) important things. I just think you're getting a raw deal and that you're getting relayed far too much content to focus on the quality. Newsposts here used to have a sense of personality and style, now they're just minimal lines of facts and figures with barely a semblance of opinion.

The HL newsportal communities used to run competitions or spark interesting or quirky debates when there was a dry spell of news. Now it seems because Valve runs the show the news is being eeked out for appearances sake, just to keep the Valve and Steam brands ticking over in our active memory. That's the difference between the past and the present as I see it. If you don't think that's the case you need to do more to convince me otherwise. If you don't care about my opinion just say so and I'll stop giving it and go back to lurking, but judging by this desperate plea of a sticky I'm guessing that's not what you want.

I know it's hard to fill dry patches when there is no news to give, but that's half the fun of it; being inventive and original in how you fill these dry spells.

And if you're gonna stand by your 'duty' to thrust Popcap games down our throats (which I'm perfectly aware of, I do boot up Steam occasionally), then maybe reconsider renaming HL2.net to Valve-et-al.net because this:
This site is your complete guide to Half-Life 2 and other Valve Software titles. Valve Software has a huge following and this site hopes to be a home to that community. Here you can find constant updates of all new media and games released by Valve as well as detailed information concerning everything they have produced over the years.

We also have a large community forum with over 61,600 registered members and 2,100,000 posts. If you want good conversations with good people in a fun and easygoing environment, then we invite you to register and join other like minded fans.

The site started in March of 2003 and was developed by Munro. He soon recruited a few site writers and moderators to help complete the site with information and to keep an eye on the forums. This team of gamers sacrifice their time to keep up on all the latest and greatest information on Half-Life 2, ensuring this site is the best HL2 resource on the Internet. We are gamers just like yourself trying to provide a resource for you. So, if you think something's missing, or the site could be improved in some way please tell us.

As we continue to grow and expand, and as more games are released, we continue to make the site even better. This site will always give you all the latest and greatest information on the games, but we are looking ahead to much more. We want to offer the community something different - regular and original content, coverage of gaming events and the news that matters. The future of Halflife2.net is looking very bright, and you can look forward to more new and regular content than ever before from a team of writers who, being gamers, know exactly what the gamers want and will provide it.
... is a fallacy.

I understand that I may be coming across as slightly aggressive, but that's because it pisses me off when business practise overrides personality, and creativity is stripped from the braincells before it's even a glimmer of a thought process.

I mean, did anyone even think about doing a review for Insurgency? Smash I'm sure you're better placed than most to get an early copy.

Valve bought us out? When? Crispy, crawl back to wherever you came from. As soon as I saw you preaching about journalism I knew for a second you hadn't changed. :|

Okay, my mistake, Valve only supply your hosting. Thanks for pointing that out without being as much an ass as I, Pi.

There's really no excuse for the current state of affairs then, is there? I mean where's the insightfulness I used to come to HL2.net for?

Why exactly are there three Popcap game announcements? Why has there been only one review so far this year of a game that's been out almost three? Why hasn't there been an interview since 2006? Why hasn't there been an editorial since this time last year? (I see we've appointed a new editor since then...) And there have been plenty of mods released and plenty of upcoming Valve games bending over backwards to get themselves noticed. As the premier HL2 and Valve game resource, it's sad to see you playing second fiddle when by rights you should be getting the solos.

There's definitely a problem in that we are pretty much currently only posting received content - stuff that is sent to our mailbox, when we should also be generating content. However, we are aware of this and have a bunch of things lined up. Sometimes the wheels move just a bit too slowly, though.

Crispy - on the main page at the moment there is precisely ONE PopCap related news item,

One, not three, please get the facts straight first.

Editorials - yeah we need to get more done, and stuff is being worked on behind the scenes.

In relation to the 'Vale-et-al.net' reference, well things have changed massively since the site was started. To ignore what goes on with Steam would be foolish.

We provide good Mod coverage, but maybe (me in particular) we have become reliant on stuff that comes to the news-box, but this is something i have noticed myself and (with the Dead End Mod Update) am trying to change.

Interview - this is definately being worked on by Glenn. For me at cncnation.net it took about three months between submitting my questions and getting the answers back (which i got last night)

On adding our own personal 'Character' to the news, other people complain when we do it in our own styles and also complain when we put our opinions in it.

Opinions and stylings in my view are for editorial pieces and the News should be plain and simple, news.

We are working, but please bear in mind we all have real lives and for some of us other sites to work on.

That is why we need your feedback, however there are some things which only happen when Munro comes along. We were waiting for a month at least between having the L4D, GMOD10, TF2 and Portal articles to be put up.

As Pi said, the wheels turn, but slowly at times.

Something is coming along tomorrow so watch out!

Fair enough. I know it's all too easy to get settled into bad habits but as long as it's being worked on that makes me (and I'm sure other, less up-front/obnoxious individuals) a lot happier.

Fair enough, in that case I want more editorials! MOAR I SAY!

BTW I never mentioned what was on the main page. I mentioned there were 3 Popcap announcements, which there are in the "News and Announcements" forum.

Pity Munro's such a... erm 'busy'... erm man.
Arse.
Man. I meant man. :p

Interview is in progress as said, waiting on Doug to get get back to us. Editorials and reviews are problematic, I agree. We'll address that in the near future.

Meanwhile...in 24 hours and we'll give you something significant to chew on.

Can't wait. :)

Bump. Must be at teh top most of teh time!

Well, I'm a lurker I guess. I like to read what other people are posting but I'm lazy and not interested in joining the discussions myself. Since this thread's demanding with big fonts that lurkers should register and post, I decided to make my second post on these forums D:

So yeah. I think my original reason for registering was that I wanted to be able to see attachments and do searches. I like to read but not post. And I haven't even played HL2 or Episode 1 yet (my internet connection problems are a loooong story).

And after this post I'll probably disappear back to lurkerdom and type up my third post in year 2010. :)
