I have a good computer (Pentium 4 w/ 2.8GHz, 512 RAM, Radeon 9700), and I can crank up the details on HL2 to HIGH setting on 800x600. Using the cl_showfps 2 command, I can see that I normally have a framerate of about 60FPS, dipping into the low 40s and 30s sometimes. That's great. However, the game will often skip. What I mean is that the frame will freeze and the sound in the background will repeat 2 or 3 times and then unfreeze.

For example, this will happen if I fire my gun into a box when I haven't fired my gun into a box for a while. Each subsequent shot I fire doesn't cause the game to skip like it did before. What's causing this? Outdated sound drivers maybe? I tried turning sound acceleration down in Windows, but that didn't help.

OMFG look around man, look for the BIG thread about AUDIO, what you have is called the STU STU STUUUU STUTTER BUG, nad dont worry your not the only one who has it, I do and so do at least HALF A MILLION OTHER PEOPLE (NO JOKE) that HAVE the game. Can you fix it? NO THEIR IS NO UNIVERSAL FIX, if you look on the audio thread theres somethings people have done to reduce it or IN SOME LUCKY CASES get rid of it, but chances are you will not be so lucky. There is no word on when this will be solved, BUT MOST KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS ITS CALLED MILES, THE AUDIO DRIVERS USED IN THE GAME ARE CRAP AND THEIRS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO UPDATE OR CHANGE THEM!!!.

See for yourself GOTO CONTROL PANEL / SOUND / SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES / HARDWARE then look up your soundcard and disable it and run the game! YOU WILL SEE THAT THE STUTTERING DISAPPEARS, BUT YOU WILL HAVE NO SOUND to MAKE SURE you disabled it properly load a level with people talking, if their lips dont move then you disabled your soundcard correctly!

OMFG lay off. The game has problems. This is the HL2 support section of the forums.

You have a similar system to mine, and the same problem.

A lot of people mess around with their systems and some reduce the problem or fix it, but the short answer is that it's not something with a known solution yet.

At the moment, it's best to just try and ignore it if you can.
