hl² send me to desktop

I think this will fix everyone's desktop booting problems if they execute it correctly. I did this last night and it did not work. Read through it again and thought I might have done it wrong. So tried ti again and hey presto the game works.

Dunno how you knew how to do that fireflaie but very clever, and thanks. :bounce:

The above never worked for me, but this did.

If you delete the HL or CS folder located at:

\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\STEAM _ACCOUNT_NAME\

Close steam restart it, launch the game and Viola!

I did this, same problems remain.

I tried both fireflair's and GratefulPhan's recommendations with no success. I also reinstalled my video card drivers (Nvidia 66.93).

I was actually able to play half life 2 for a few days before it started doing this.

I am getting the same problem just after the valve start screen im just get a black screen then drops to desktop, tried uninstall and re-installed and tried this fix on the thread with no luck HELP! :flame:

AMD 64 3400+ winxp pro sp2
Radeon 9800XT lateist driver
1GB Ram

You cant be following it correctly. Make sure you are in the corrct folders. and copy and paste whathe says to the T. It will work if you execute it right

Woody...if you don't have Catalyst 4.12beta as your video driver, assuming you use Catalyst...you don't have the latest driver. ;)

Actually, I followed the instructions exactly (3 times). Like most other users on this forum, I am capable of reading and following instructions. I think that it is obvious that this "fix" does not work for everyone. If it worked 100% of the time, why wouldn't it be listed on Vivendi's support site?

Since I was actually able to play the game for 2 days before the trouble started, I suspect that an automatic steam update may be the problem. Anyway, I sent a message to Vivendi describing the problem and will post the solution if they can find one.

Like glennst, I too was able to play, even finished the game, before this started happening. It started right after last steam update, and I have tried that fix several times and it doesn't fix it for me.

I just completely uninstalled steam and half life 2 and reinstalled them, and now counter strike is not working (it was working before). Also, I uninstalled my video driver and reinstalled the latest from Nvidia (66.93).

I have tried several fixes suggested on this board (copying files from bin folder, renaming .gcf files, deleting folders, etc.), but none have fixed the problem. I am pretty sure that it is not a problem with my computer, since all other games work perfectly (Doom 3, Far Cry, UT2004, BF:Vietnam, Thief 3, etc). All my drivers are up to date. Also, my hardware is relatively high-end: Athlon 64 3000, 6800 GT, 1024MB. I am still waiting on a reply from Vivendi.

Considering the large number of serious bugs accompanying this game's release, I think that Valve has really dropped the ball. This is unfortunate since it would be an otherwise excellent game.

Used fireflaie instructions and it works :bounce:  . I don' t know how you worked this out fireflaie. I will be emailing the makers saying they should pay you as you got it running. I emailed them on the 19 of November and still no support from them  Once again thank you fireflaie

I too am having this problem. I try loading my last autosave and when the progress is one bar from being filled it crashes to the desktop. I tried the trick fireflaie posted to no avail.

My system:
A64 3000
DFI LAN Party II nf2
Gigabyte 6800GT
512 MB OCZ 3200
Using onboard sound

The game played great at 1600x1200 4xAA all way until late in Anticitizen. I think my HDD was running out of space and the game was stuttering real bad and stalling when walking around corners. I tried lowering to 2xAA and experimenting with video settings. When I got to the next load screen it just froze there.

That's when my problems started. Please, help!

Thanks,
Zaphod

I think im going to do a program for doing this thing all automaticly..

I also have the same prob. I get to this one part after crossing tracks where u go down stairs then u load and i just load rite out...lol

Did u guys buy the game or u have the download version?

Ok i could honestly claim i just solved my prob. I was gett intg the same errors as u guys and just decided to buy the game.

I dont know if u guys have the dowloaded version but i did. I just installed the game without uninstalling the downloaded one and just let it go through.
It took a while and i no longer get stuck anywhere..

Ifixed it for me hope it works for u..

I figured out what was causing my problems. Apparently the autosaves were corrupt. After deleting them from the "SAVE" directory, all is well. All the other saves are loading fine. Damn....wish I had saved it on my own more often.

Zaphod

Hi peeps I had this problem but merely stumbled upon the way i fixed it. I went in to direct x diagnostics and turned the hardware acceleration for my sound card off at first and to my surprise hl2 now works absolutely perfect up 2 now
this actually did the trick for me ... it's a beautiful thing.

For NVIDIA just roll back your driver

Worked For Me !
after 2 frustrating !@#$#@ days
even since i installed any of the forceware drivers, my games have never been the same. on my old geforce 2 mx i could play halo without a problem. then i got a slightly-used geforce 5200 fx, updated to the forceware drivers and i couldn't play halo worth a damn. i might just get some of the older detonator drivers (since they never seemed to give me problems) just to be safe.

I was so happy when I found this thread, to bad none of the solutions were any good to me :(. Strange there is such a large number of people who (like me) just go from the loading screen to the desktop. (before the update I could load and play, but on saves and autosaves it shut down and gave me the desktop, and when I altered setting and pressed ok it did the same, after the update I can't even load the game, not much of a difference because shutting down and having to restart the game after each autosave isn't really a playable way of getting through the game). I tried everything I, and you guys came up with but nothing helped, well, back to hl1 then :s.

(btw, I have bought the game. So I'm not playing on that stupid illegal version)

@ fireflaie

Dude, I just registered just to say: YOU TOTALLY ROCK!

Thanks man, you spared me a really fat ulcer, I'll build an altar in your name!

(BTW, everyone havig similar problems should also check _throughly_ for worms/trojans - fireflaie's gig worked for me but only after I found and removed a trojan that my usual anti virus proggie didn't detected!
Try http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for an online check - this baby found mine.)

Good luck to all you others who didn't succeed yet - i really can understand how you feel :-(
