downloaded HL 1 from steam last night and had another trundle around black mesa. For a game around 6 years old, the AI of the marines still rocks.. many of these next gen games, doom 3 being an example should take note of what a 6 yr old game can still do that they cant

Nice you like HL and all that...

Now if you read up a bit about Doom 3, you would've known that AI wasn't much of a focus. Doom 3 is a straightforward shooter just like Serious Sam which was based on Doom again. Anyway the AI of Doom 3 isn't crap, but that's how it was supposed to be...

Yes, but even if id wanted to make an amazing game, could they? :( I guess we will have to see what Quake IV will be made of...

All you guys would moan sooo much more if zombies hid behind creates crouching, the AI in perfect for the type of game it is

Then don't use it too compare the AI of HL and Doom 3, because it's nonsense... ok I'm bored too now, Hmmmkay bye :)

lol.. nah im not the Glen-meister, but that is where I liberated the name from, one of the all time great surnames I reckon :)

He reminded me of Gabe so much...lol.

edit: damn MTV for cancelling his show.

I just recently played HL1 through, first time.

It was good....for a six year old game. Some stuff frustrated me, but from what I've heard, it won't be the case in HL2.

I can't ****ing wait for HL2...
26 days, 3 hours, 57 minutes.

i still play, just beat it for the 3rd time a few days ago. just getting into the HL2 mood ;O

I'm playing the entire thing through for the second time. Currently, I'm somewhere around Surface Tension

Yea great game... i just couldn't stand to play doom3 for a long time again because i am so got so tired of the gameplay

I got way spoiled by half-life and really don't like the run and gun shooter anymore... maybe that's why i don't get CS is so popular... i think its really really boring

No. Doom3 was their big attempt at a great game but they fell short in so many areas.

I think iD are too hesitant in trying new things, gamewise. Doom 3 just reaks of that 'been there done that' feel. I heard originally there wasn't even going to be a crouch feature? It's pretty amazing that a developer with their reputation would be so horribly out of the loop as to even have arguments over such a standard (expected) feature. Good god. iD arguing over a crouch feature while Valve are best figuring out how to make this flying dropship assault you with a volley of fire while your caining over water in an airboat dodging bombs being dropped into the water.

And Carmack is sitting there whinging about a crouch feature.

To me Half-Life 1 is still a far more entertaining game to play than Doom 3. I really wish developers would learn from the things Valve do, but they never seem to. Those damn fools!

Other developers probably feel that if they do too many things that valve did they'll just be accused of ripping them of or, in id's case, not being true to their shoot-fest run-and-gun FPS history.

It's not so much copying Valves ideas, it's copying Valves mentality of being creative and willing to try new things.

Their cabal design process for example. I think that's an excellent way of being open to all new ideas.

I replayed HL1 about 2 months ago and I still found it very immersive. I don't find today's games immersive for some reason.

I agree... id, particulary carmack is stuck in his way like an old man :-P

Although personally i think his area is making engines... and he is the best at that IMO.

I just don't think Id has a lot of creativity, or at least enough to really break their "we invented the shooter fps" mentality.

John Carmack seems to have this attitude like "phh... people don't need ragdolls, their just a gimmick" screw wave of the future, i want hardcore balls to the wall - gunz ablazing action nonstop fury!!!!!!!! :sniper: :sniper: :sniper:

Completed HL1: 12 times. Opposing Force: 4 times Blue Shift: 1 time

=D

Edit: Spelling o______________o

EXACTLY. I remember playing the shareware version of Wolfenstein when I was around eight or nine thinkning it was a gift from god. Believe it or not, the next FPS I played happened to be Half Life: Day One. It came at a perfect time too. My tastes had matured to a story driven, intellectual (more or less) experience.

Anything less now and I'm dissapointed. DOOM 3's production values were amazing and it had its moments, but I didn't feel very compelled to finish it (still haven't beat it). My favorite games since Half Life have been the Deus Ex series, games with an RPG element in them.

If you ask me, the perfect shooter is a hybrid of the Half Life and Deus Ex series. Make it a non-linear experience, but don't present it in a self-conscious way. The more natural it feels, the better a game. At least that's what I think.

hehehe i played hl 1 about five time because it so cool!

Yea same here... Half-Life is really the only game i can play years after i got it and still have a lot of fun playing it... i can't even think of a game i can do that with now

Even far cry... far cry was a beautiful game but something about it got boring. I think it was just the repetitiveness and once that "newness" factor wears off the drudge of having to complete to the end is just grueling.

REALLY REALLY had that problem with doom3... i just kept getting angrier and angrier and by the time i beat it i NEVER WANTED TO PLAY IT AGAIN!

For some reason Half-Life was different... its something i really can't put my finger on but its still a blast

I dont agree. I felt the A.I marines were easy. Only part of hl that got me lower then 50 hp was the assasin part. Far Cry had some good a.i. Doom 3 had to much crap on the floor every corner had life .

maybe you missed the point, dude...unlike Far Cry and Doom 3, Half-life is SIX years old
