Halo... Lemme tell you about Halo1 a knock off of hl1... Yes this accusation is a long shot but listen to me

What exactly is the flood? Why are there lil head crabs? Why are there men with aliens on their heads?

Covenant? Combine? Halo sux!
Well, both owe their debt to the Alien films above anything. Around Half-Life 1's release most people I knew refered to the Headcrabs as "Face Huggers". However, the whole feel of Halo 1 screams Aliens, and I'm very confident that Bungie were Aliens fans. The Pillar of Autumn looks like the ship in Aliens, the "foehammer" (or whatever it was) plane looks like the plane Shuttle/Plane in Aliens, the Pilot of the escape pod looks like the Pilot of the Shuttle/Plane and then you have the reduplicating Sergeant from Halo who sounds, looks and even says the same things as the Sergeant in Aliens.

"Move it Marines, They ain't paying us by the hour!".

Though as far as the actual alien design in Halo, they really should have learned a thing or two from H.R.Giger. In the final product, the Covenant seem like they were designed by an episode of Queer Eye...

HL1 was damn near perfect, the puzzles made you think the guns felt like they actually worked you had the freedom to do what you wanted.

HL2 cant quite put my finger on it but this game just had no soul. My 6 year old cousin loves this game so perhaps that’s their target ordinance, although he said it was bit to easy.
HL1 is survival horror. But far more frantic.
HL2 is glorious revolution, and it has this sublime feel to it. It flows, and feels fun and good to play.

Half Life 1 all day long. HL2 obviously has better graphics than HL1 but so has nearly everything else since! You expect that with the FPS genre. The physics engine & it's implimentation in the game is one of the most impressive aspects of HL2.

But HL1 it ain't & the reasons? First up HL2 had a hell of a lot to live up to. Probably the most anticipated game ever on PC it became a victim of it's own hype to some extent. Everyone expected a lot & they got it for the most part but it was all over to quickly & it was far to easy.

When HL1 came out it had few rivals. Apart from Unreal what else was there at the time that had the kind of scope that HL1 demonstrated? The whole experience was unparalleled at the time & I don't feel that HL2 did enough to replicate that experience. HL2 was bloody good but it couldn't surpass the experience of the first time around HL1.

I'm looking forward to going through HL1 again hopefully with the Black Mesa Source mod.

Your right Half-Life 1 Was the start of a revolution. It was the only game of its kind aroudn. Noone compared to their AI. And still today HL1 has better AI then games comming out. HL1 Shocked the world. And again HL2 was the most anticipated game of all time. That title is HUGE. So even though it wasn't as good as the first time. It still ranks up probably at number one on the charts.

Half life was one of the few games that changed the world in 1998!!!

Can't fault that, nuff said!!!

i just ordered the platinum edition #2

i've never played the original half-life single player/any of the expansions so this should be interesting =)

As far as hl1 vs hl2 goes, I can't really imagine you enjoy hl1 more. It's a matter of "You had to be there".

yeah... but i still need to know teh story line because i have no clue what xen is

a) an acid trip
b) annoying as hell

there's a starter :)

all i remember from it (this was before steam came out... my friend copied me the cd and let me use his serial key) was a bunch of helicoptors and marines coming out of them. i ran into some vent and hid there because i got scared. then i just played counter-strike and deathmatch and never played in single player again. it seemed really cool though, especially now after finishin hl2.

HL2!!!! of course!!

HL2 ownes HL1!! easly..

HL2 has: Better graphics, more characters, game music, more action! ;)

There sure are a lot of these threads.

Anywho, I'd consider it a close tie with HL2 taking the lead purely because of the graphics and integration of physics.

Physics is probably the only thing HL2 has over HL.

Graphics don't count because all FPSs have evolved with it to look just as good, some better.

Half-Life had game music too; matter of fact, Half-Life 2 borrows quite a few tracks from Half-Life 1.

HL1 was absolutely brilliant, only if you've played it first time. The initial experience of going through the totally innocent and tranquill atmosphere and then be met by the horrors which followed was, in my opinion, unbeatable by other games. HL2 is brilliant but the initial shock and surprise element has been lost, although not completely.

hl1 was more original and was a thousand times cooler with the aliens and the whole science-lab feel to it; HL2 is unorginal (still amazing) but not quite as fun

It had the rather large advantage of being released 6 years before Half-Life 2 anyway, so this is a bit of a mute point. I don't think we can talk about which was "more original" at all, but both games represent massive leaps forward from their times. I still can't see abject HL1 fanboyism as anything but nostalgia clouded logic or the "aren't I cool for going against the flow?" mentality though.

Kind of odd that the result is so close, don't you think? :)

Well, I think for a lot of people, HL1 had loads upon loads of mystery, 99% of the game's story was obscure, leaving the rest for you to fill in. Even the ending, you were given an alternate one as well, so it was like "what REALLY happened to Gordon."

As for HL2, it seemed its main focus was technology, Physics, facial expressions, etc. From what I saw of the e3 vids awhile back, it really seemed that they were capturing the atmosphere from HL1. Then *splat*, it seems they threw everything on the cutting room floor, and rebuilt the entire game from there. It seemed rushed. Don't get me wrong, it was an excellent game, the best FPS I've played in awhile. But, if HL1 used the Source engine (to the full-extent, not HL: Source), had facial expression tech and a full physics engine, I think HL1 would turn out to be the better game in many instances.

HL1 did not have any game music, phhh..

ancient thread, but what will you do...

I was thinking on this subject the other day, and I must ask:

Can any of those who voted for HL1 honestly tell me what chapters in HL2 were as poor as On a Rail and Residue Processing? I'm not even going to go into the puzzle jumping blandness that was Xen. Sure, HL1 probably had some excellent bits that were better than anything in HL2, but there was a lot in there that was total poo in a way that HL2 simply lacks.
