HL/CSS/GMOD shiney graphics

Hello. I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix my game.

Basically in HL2/CSS/Gmod all the walls are shiney, the water is like yellow and uber shiney, its really hitting my FPS and I want to get rid of it..It hasnt done it before until the other day (counterstrike downloaded some form of update which added some new, utterly pointless skins) and now my game is tehfookered.
I took a look in the settings (didnt notice anything changed, I even tried turning HDR off (to no effect of course..)

Any Ideas? thanks anyone who answers.

Maybe it has something to do with the 64bit technology?
You can validate the files by going into steam, going into the properties of the game, then local files and clicking verify integrity of game cache.

Yeah it's ballsed up for everyone since the 64-bit update. ;(

mat_dxlevel 81 in the console will get rid of the shinyness, but also lose some shader detail. It's a good trade-off IMO.

Why do I want to lose this? It makes enemies better visible lol :p

Yea, I'm having the same problem.
Started after the 64bit update thingy.

Hmm, it's actually fine with HDR on in Lost Coast or DoD:S. If it's fine in plain HL2 then lucky you I guess. ;)

Can't valve ever make decent updates without bugs that ruin the damn game? When are they fixing this... I got backs of buildings missing and something saying "reflection 50%" and shiny garbage and models getting messed up in water...

thanks

Thanks for replies, Im going for a shower then ill try the mat_dxlevel 81..ill do anything to get rid of this shiney crap..

ill edit this post when ive tried it to see if its any good

*edit*

Much better. Thanks

i am having this shiny problem too...at one point i thought it was my video card giving signs that it was dying on me until someone else in the server assured that he had the same problem.
anyway i am a bit less worried now...i really don't have money for a new video card right now.

that must be something about bumpmapping i think. weird

I noticed it right after the 64 bit update, but it's not as bad for me as it is in some of these screenshots. It actually made CS look a bit...slicker (Which was maybe what Valve intended? *shrug*), although the reflections in water on some parts just looked stupidly shiny.

Yeah, same with me. I was playing PoI from the point where Barney tells you to stack up some stuff and go through "that" window. The floor was too shiny, but I thought it was just me. Then I saw the hall, in which you must "pick up the can", and thought that I must've messed something up in the settings. After tweaking them, I continued to play until I've reached the plaza.

Now WTF is going on??? The water looks like someone urinated into it. Certain textures have an unusual shiny effect.

I'm getting it too :(. Getting in the way of making comics.

Humm

Well last night on CS before joining any games (on main menu) I did the command (in the console) and then I went to join a game..yep no more shiney..except my game is now unplayable..I can run straight forward and tis fine, as soon as I turn (like to aim) I drop to 0fps and I cant play (for obvious reasons) then if I dont move the mouse it goes back up to 60+fps.

If I dont do the command I have everything shiney but crap FPS..this is a new(ish) card (~1 month old) which was working perfectly the other week and works fine with all my other games.

ill restart my pc a few times..make sure everything is running fine (few spyware checks etc etc), ill validate my files..ill try again..ill post back/edit if any change..

got mad

Got mad with it. deleted C:\program files\valve. redownloading my games now..Hopefully a fresh start should cure all ailments. only takes a while to download my games..(CS: S only takes 60 mins...HL2 is 4gb..meh good job I have other things to do!)

I'm getting it too . Getting in the way of making comics.

You should make a comic about how it's getting in the way of making comics! :E

I noticed this....I like it on certain parts....other times it kinda makes it look a bit wierd. I think it only happens on Nvidia cards.

Aztec on CSS is the worst for it and yes it was only after the 64bit update it happend.

I thought it was a texture bug. It looks stupid as hell because some areas are really shiney, then maybe a rock or some different textured area is just normal. Looks crap and "placed".

Is it ment to be HDR? I can see the idea of it reflecting but it only works on certain surfaces and "repeats" it's self, like the wall of gm_construct for GarrysMod.

I have a Radeon 9800 and while it's not as bad as that screenshot, the water is still full of urine and everything's a bit too shiny.
