HL Source

Can anyone tell me if you can download the HL: Source if you only have HL 2. By only having HL 2, i mean its not platinum or bronze or whatever, its just the regular game. Any help will be apprecaited.

You cannot.

Honestly, tho, there is not enough difference between it and the original HL to care. The water looks different, and theres the occasional bumpmapped texture. Otherwise, its the same HL. At some point there will be fan conversions that look far better then the original game.

It actually does do a better job with lighting if your running on DirectX9. True the textures and the models are the same but with the better lighting it does a better job at tricking your brain . The AI routine has also been smarten up a bit and the game has a much better feel then the original did (always felt a little clunkly to me).

There's better lighting (or worse, in a few areas), physics + ragdoll (which is pretty cool for HL, I have to admit), a few different sounds, a few shader effects thrown about, and nifty water. They're the only differences really.

And 3D skyboxes right? Apparently the cliff-section in "Surface Tension" looks fairly good now (though I understand it's of about the same quality as you'd have got if they'd have had 3D skyboxes in HL1...)

BTW, I think I heard that the Fan-Conversions will try to make their HL1 remakes available to HL:Source owners only. It's not like the conversions will be here for a long time anyway - I'd say an ETA of at least 2 years. Sometime during that time I'm going to nostalgic and want to play Half-Life through again. If HL:Source was available independently from Half-Life 2 (and DoD is soon anyway), I'd consider buying it. Price would have to reasonable tho (£5?)

The only problem is that the remakes will differ from the original (I mean i still play Doom1 even though Doom3 was a remake). HL:source was just for people that wanted to play a more stable version of half-life (sorta like Darkplaces quake, Doomlegacy, and GLduke).

Yeah, forgot about those. They're quite nifty too. :) Though they're just 3D versions of the 2D skyboxes, so they're hardly packing a lot of detail.

I'm fairly sure Valve will someday make HL:S available separately... why not, after all. If the original HL still sells, HL:S would also sell, it's after all the same game, but better a bit, and certainly better for newcomers to HL. 20$ might be a reasonable price for it.

NO I'd price it at $5. I think I know they're strategy, they're trying to make more money of their customers by forcing them to purchase HL: S with a bunch of other games to cost $60 and above, not allowing them to buy it seperately and making more customers purchase the Silver and Gold editions if they desperately want HL: S. NO offense. And there are those who want HL: S without having to order it off Steam, those who bought HL2 retail, NOT the collectors edition and don't want to spend $60 or above to get HL: S off Steam.

HL: S is absolute crap, imo.

It definately wasn't worth the extra money I paid for the collectors edition. Valve need to make DoD: S free with the collectors and silver/gold copies of the game, cause HL: S was exactly HL. There was no source engine in there. Not from what I could see anyway. Models and textures still sucked. There were no added physics as someone said, at one point in the training, you have to push a box into a small crevice to climb over, I pushed the box almost right in, and it just floats on thin air, until the whole thing goes in. <sarcasm>Wow, nice realistic physics </sarcasm>.

Going by the quality of HL: S, DoD: S is gonna be just as shit. So unless they give it to me for free, I'm definately not going to pay any money for it. GG VALVe. Now give me DoD: S free you cheap bastards.

No offense valve

Yeah, I'd really appreciate an oppurtunity to buy HL:S... because I'm sure as hell not going to buy another copy of HL2 just for that. Has valve said anything about this?

VALVe has not as far as I know. I'm not taking my HL2 copy back and trading it in for a collector's edition either, and damn, VALVe better make HL: S seperate and purchasable for $5 or £5. Hell, it should even be free if you've purchased the original HL or HL2!
