I know this is HL2 forum, but I was playing through HL:Source for good times and I just had to say how amazed I was at that game (HL 1, not neccessarily HL:S). The thing that stuck out most for me (and the reason I'm writing this post) is the radio chatter from grunts as you walk along empty, dark halls. You don't see anybody around, you just hear that radio chatter Never have I heard such an atmospheric, downright scary effect. Ravenholm is by far one of the scariest parts of any game, but I don't think anything will ever top that sound. I literally stop, and try and walk quietly in the game in hopes the grunts won't hear/see me.

Just had to point that out.

Yeah...The grunts spooked me out too man... The chatter always was a bit uncomforting since it made them seem EVERYWHERE.

don't let HL2 overshadow the greatness of HL1. The original game was as good as or better than HL2.

meh i always thought the radio chatter was too cheesy to be scary. Plus I don't find fighting humans as scary. Fighting 9 foot tall aliens who make scary noises, however, is a different story.

never played HL:S, thought it would be a waste of time

dude, welcome to the best game ever which is HL1, the original.

it is better, scarier more aggressive, gripping, interesting , brutal and entertaining than hl2 ever has been.

the original half life stuff and its atmosphere was just sheer excitment and action especially when fighting the recon marine grunts. thier radio chattr is better then the combine ever could be. plus they kick ass. swear , curse drop kick u in the balls and then double shotgun your ass.

now u people may understand why us older fans stll stand by the originality and formula of the old game. it was the mother of all games and it was the true success.

hl2 has lost its way abit compared to what it should have come from, older fans just want to see things as good, if not better than HL1

Yes, those grunts really did scare me. I was scared to go out there and battle them. :D

whats the best hl1 map, in your opinion, if i just want to fight a good amount of grunts? i can't remember, and i don't feel like replaying a good chunk of the game just to get to those parts.

the Civil Protection? or the Combine Overwatch? Anyway, manhacks are far more scarier compared to them! lol...

Grunts scary?!.. You HAVE to be kidding me

So... you played HL2 before HL1, eh? Back in 1998, they were scary as you know where.

I played it in year 2000. Didn't find the grunts scary in the least bit. Ravenholm wasn't that scary either (except for poison headcrabs, they were all hairy and made weird noises and brought back my old fear of spiders). The poison headcrabs were the only scary thing in HL2 really. The fast zombies weren't really as scary as they were annoying.

You guys must get scared really easily, there's even someone here who was afraid of the trains in hl2. And let me guess you guys were afraid to play doom 3 alone in the dark too?

I haven't played it yet, I guess I don't know what I'm missing... :O

I never once found grunts in hl1 scary... but combine in hl2... was anybody else chilled by their footstep noises? Crunch crunch crunch... i felt surrounded so many times! Their voices were perfect in my eyes, they set the same atmosphere as the original grunts but just sounded better overall.

Ravenholm was the only scary part in Halflife 2 for me. That and anypart that involved water...

it's not really fear i guess, but more suspense and tension. you're sitting there, like "oh shit, oh shit" (well at least, for the HL1 grunts...I guess they did scare me). i'm not some wuss, i guess I just really get into games. waht i do, is i try to actualyl pretend I am there where freeman is..that makes it scary as ****. think about it, you walk to your house at night, no one is home, it's dark. you wouldn't want to see some fast zombie or poison headcrap bust out, now would you?

the scariest thing ever I think, is the movie "the ring". the first time I saw that i was scared shitless.

the best game of all time is what you're missing.

I loved HL2, absolutely loved it, but HL1 will always remain my favorite game of all time. I thought HL2 at least equaled it, but there was something about the original that you just can't beat. sequels always have a tough time topping their former counterparts, whether it be movies or videogames, but HL2 did the best job I have ever seen.

Anybody remember the first time you see an alien grunt? I don't remember the exact chapter, but I remember walking into a laboratory of some kind, queing some pretty ambient dark music. There was this sort of cage thign in the middle of the room and when you look around to see what's inside it, BOOM a friggin Alien is right in your face...

and anybody who says that HL1 grunts nad the zombies in HL2 didnt scare is either a)lying or b) wasn't really playing the game.

The only scary thing about HL2 for me was passing through the hyrda's room (i recognised it from the binks) in the sewers and expecting to get stabbed at any moment... Which ofcourse never happened, which just drove the suspense through the roof!

Not even Ravenholm scared me all that much... And the mines after it just annoyed the hell out of me... I just loved seeing Barney again though, I literally jumped for joy when he first appeared in the game, and I actually yelled out " Oh my god, it's Barney!" to my sister who was watching me play it the first time through... Ofcourse she had no idea what the significance of that was though...

Is there a way to get HL: Source on it's own. I already have HL2.
It seemed like waste of money at first but I didn't realy realise what HL: Source was in the special edition packs.

No. :(

The sewers is by far the most scariest place for me... the feel of being outnumbered by metrocops and helicopters.

There's a console command for HL2 - impulse 76 - which has the effect "grunt-o-matic". Does anyone have the slightest inkling as to what the hell that means?

The best level in HL1 is right after questionable ethics, in surface tension i believe. That level is sweet, between the helicopters, the cliffs, and the tanks its so cool. I played HL1 so many times, i can beat it under an hour, but it still is the best FPS ever. HL2 may have the looks, but HL1 has the story.

"Squad, Check, In"

"FREEMAN!"

"Go, Recon"

And other bits of cool. Now all I'm waiting for is a Opposing Force : Source

:D

Cant wait for the HL:Source mod which is revamping everythinf, cant remember what it was called but I cant wait for it.I wanna see what they do about that "Blind Tentacle thing"TM Be great to see that in High Res.

The Grunts were the worst part of half-life 1 and when they became the focus over the alien invasion, I was SO pissed.

man, the crows were like the scariest thing in the whole game, lol, NOOTCH, I thought the razor trains were freaky.

I feel exactly the same way

The only thing that scared me in HL1 was the headcrabs.

Yes, I'm odd.

I played HL1 and HL2 and both grunts and metrocops/combine have at least eaqualy good AI, and they both have chatter and so on, but grunts arent scary. Only intimidating because you know they can kill you. Combine and metrocops are scary because of the masks and the regime they represent. The whole HL2 is scary because of the athmosphere of the destruction of the human kind, especially Ravenholm. HL1 was more like a donkey kong, jump here and there and youre out of the complex soon and maybe safe. Somewhat cartoonish also. Human characters in HL2 are interactive and much more complex and life like. Sure HL1 was great but not as good as HL2.
HL2 fast zombies scared shit out of me, not to speak about poisonzombie. I remember in the end of Entaglement when I entered a dark rest room and from the darkness right in front of me this this appeared. OMFG!!! :D

I think originally it was there to spawn grunts, but they took it out. I remember some mods made it work though :D Rocket Crowbar did for a while, and then it changed stuff around again.

95% of this forum played HL1 first

Anyways i always thought some of the Xen atmospher was kinda creepy

Drop to the console
speak freeman you bastard
Or something like speak freeman; speak you; speak bastard

Fun for the whole family

Half life and Half Life 2 aren't scary, they're tense. The only game/entertainment I've ever seen that introduce real fear are the Silent Hill series. Now that's fear.

I'm waiting for HL1: FULL Source to play it in Source.

As in, a conversion of everything to look as much like HL2 (I mean graphics and physics wise) as it is possible without changing things too much.

Does anyone know how many teams are working on that? Or how they're progressing?

The only problem I have with it is that it'll probably be a revisioning of HL1. So basically, it could be manipulated and tailored to the mod makers' own tastes. This might not necessarily be a bad thing, but it certainly runs the risk of ruining the experience in a big way.
Besides, they won't be able to use any of the original sounds/voices, will they? I mean, if they're offering an improved free version of Valve's own HL: S then why should Valve let them use the sounds?

If Valve didn't allow us to use sounds from their games in our mods, then mods such as City 13, Sven Coop 1 & 2, and most single player mission packs for HL1 (and soon to be HL2) would be damn near impossible seeing as we wouldn't be allowed to use any of the existing weapon sounds, death screams, etc etc... Can you imagine mappers being forced to record their own custom strider noises for every map?
