Right,I'm Thinking on Buying Half life 1 on the PC.It is £5.54,Which is a Good deal. But,i have one question.I bought it on the PS2 but The game Went a Bit funny Half way threw. Is the rest of the Game Good?

I'm surprised you don't have the original Half-Life on the PC yet. To answer your question, yes, it's a good game. The artificial intelligence is great, it's even better than Half-Life 2's AI. The 'Hazardous Environment Combat Unit' uses many tactics to try to eliminate you. They stay behind cover, they flank you, and they even rush you while you're reloading.

The graphics are a bit dated, but they're still good for a '98 game. If you want, you could download Half-Life: Source off of Steam. Valve implemented the Source engine into it, so now it has better graphics and physics.

Yes, it costs 9.99, but it also includes Half-Life Deathmatch: Source.

Well i can't Download it then.I get £7.00 a week and i can't be bothered saving up.i'll just buy it off amazon then.

When you do, put your key into Steam, that way you can have a hard copy whilst using steam to download, play, and update the game.

Ill be frank, HL1 is the closest that man has ever come to perfection. It is without a doubt not only the greatest piece of electronic art, but perhaps the greatest piece of art EVER. It makes the person who experiences it go through an array of emotions that is unmatched by anything. In my eyes it is the epitome of perfection.

...Yes you should buy it.

Haha

When I lol'd at that first sentence, it came out as an abrupt "HEHHHH!" I felt pretty stupid.

You went through "an array of emotions" in a game that is in reality nothing too much more than an awesome quake 2 mod?

Unless the "array of emotions" was getting pissed off at the HECU, then thats weird

Are you serious?

Have you even played Half Life? The last thing Half Life is is an "awesome" quake 2 mod. The engine stemmed from the quake 2, but the quake 2 engine itself is heavily modified.

If in your "reality" Half Life was nothing more than a quake 2 mod then I guess about 10 million people in your world are living in another "reality". By the way, I didn't include the other 10 million people because I'm modestly assuming half the people weren't into the story. Did I mention the professional reviewers? In their reality they thought very highly of the game as well.

I forgot to mention the "awesome quake 2 mod" spawned even greater mods like Counter Strike, Team Fortress etc.

Wow, dont take it so seriously. I never said anything bad about it, and i loved the game. But it is, in a way, a quake 2 mod.

Also team fortress was a quake mod.

It's a mod, bro dude man.

Put it this way.

Quake 2 was the engine of a car, everything else was built by Valve.

Half Life is not a mod, though it is based on a very heavily modified Quake 2 engine. They added 3D support and rewritten several codes. If Half Life is a mod, then it won't be using GoldSrc engine. It will be licensed and labelled as "Quake engine", but it's not, it's GoldSrc.

Basically, Half Life is at most 1/8 a mod of Quake engine. The mods of Half Life use GoldSrc engine and are labelled as the GoldSrc engine, not Quake.

By the way my mistake, Team Fortress is a quake mod.

I apologize if I was harsh earlier, but it was because I completely disagree with your post.

I am insinuating that the technology a game uses is integral to producing an emotional response
Because Half-Life uses some lines of Quake code it's just a mod hurr hurr hurr
I don't know whether you're an exceedingly bad troll or just stupid.

Lol k, wasnt expecting so much flak from that.

Also i noticed you said "JUST a mod", why does everyone here seem to think that the word "mod" is an insult?

Well let's just say Quake developers have claimed the Source engine bases itself on the Quake engine (or one of the Quake engines), though it's obvious they're trying to reap credit off Valve's work.

What ticked people off is probably your flawed information. Half Life may not be as engaging to you as it is to others (though any professional reviewers will easily label it as revolutionizing), but that doesn't mean you have the right to mock them. Not to mention, calling it "nothing more than an awesome quake 2 mod" is what quake fanboys or developers would say when they know a game is more popular than their own beloved game.

Also, the term mod implies that it is based off the works of others. Half Life is not based off Quake, nor is it based off the engine (Valve fixed the flaws and bugs in the Quake engine when they heavily modified it). By saying this, it discredits Valve's work, because GoldSrc was Valve's work, not Quake developers'.

Well I never said you didn't like it. In fact, you need to recomprehend my posts, because you seem to think I accuse you of not liking the game, which I never did. I am only accusing you of very bad facts.

Do you get Half Life:Deathmatch(Or whatever it is)With just buying of other places?

The artificial intelligence is great, it's even better than Half-Life 2's AI.

If you call dropping a grenade right at their own feet without flinching good, then yeah, the AI is awesomely suicidal

Oh please, that's such a minor bug and happens once in a while. I can't even count how many stupid things the Combine do while they're attacking you. They will stand in the open seeking no cover at all while they shoot at you, but the Marines in HL will find cover and occasionally lob grenades at you. They will also attempt to flank you while you are reloading, or caught off guard. I was surprised a couple of times when they did this.

The Combine Soldiers with shotguns attempt to rush at you directly to get in range to shoot at you. They don't seek any cover, and I can easily shoot them with my AR or SMG before they can get in range. The Marines will wait around corners or behind sandbags until you walk into the area, and then proceed to shoot at you, not run out into the open like an idiot.

I'm not trying to say the AI in Half-Life is perfect - it certainly is not - and I've encountered a couple of bugs with them too. For instance, sometimes after they have jumped out of cover to rush you, they will stay in their position as you continuously shoot them, but after they're in critical condition, they will seek cover again. They're almost similar to the AI in HL2, but not quite as oblivious.

The thing that makes HL1 better then any other game released, ever, is the mood that it creates. The feeling that the player gets when he is walking through a ravaged facility deep underground, fighting to survive. The feeling that the player gets when he is fighting against soldiers who are ordered to kill him and his colleagues like sheep at a slaughter house. And lets not forget the feeling you get when you first see the Nihlanath, thats pretty unforgettable.
The fact that it uses some other game's engine should mean nothing. Valve simply too what id (ppl that made quake 2) did and took it to the next level.

HL1 is the best game ever made. Period.

That's how I bought Half-Life. The Anthology pack is a great deal, and it consists of four great games, so I recommend that you buy it.

I know but it's Really expensive!

I got the half life generations pack for £6.44.It has Half life,Half life:Counterstrike,Multiplayer and Team Fortress classic.

Half Life Deathmatch is built into Half Life. In the bottom right corner there will be a button that says "Servers".

who cares about the engine, if someone makes a mod and its a master peice far better then the game it is modded off of then why does it matter? it doesn't.
