I don't know if this has been posted but they've started advertising on slashdot which is always a big deal because slashdot.com is one of the most popular sites on the internet.

The advertisement links to a page that explains how to pre-load HL2 onto your system. The more ads I start to see popping up on larger websites the more excited I get.

So? I don't think this means much... They know half-life 2 is near so they're advertising, I guess.

Yea well that's my point. More signs of the game beign closer and more signs of valve trying to reach out to those that don't follow press releases and message board posts as we do.

slashdot.com is one of the most popular sites on the internet.
That's very very very funny. I'd love to see the stats for Slashdot compared to Google, CNN or eBay.

Popular with Linux-using geeks, maybe.

I'm pretty sure plenty of hl2-related press releases have been on slashdot. :) Or at least, I know I've seen hl2 news on there before.

I meant slashdot knows its getting near, with the release candidate and all. It's ok to get excited, but not over this :)

You guys are impossible.

Slashdot may not receive as many hits as google but it still remains one of the most popular. Where do you think the term slashdotted came from?

I'm sure slashdot isn't advertising for valve... more like valve is advertising on slashdot... duh

slashdot is pretty damn popular too.. sites get taken down by readers of that site clicking on links to unprepared sites

Slashdots advertising is done by an external company, the same banner is shown on other sites to, its nothing huge.

I don't even visit the site.

Ebay - Google PageRank = 8
Slashdot - Google PageRank = 9
CNN - Google PageRank = 9

I've never been to or heard of the website slashdot.com and I've never heard the phrase slashdotted.

I have never heard that term before in my life.

I have however heard the term "googled".

The thing is, every single person (with few exceptions) who visits slashdot is a somewhat competent computer user and a very large percentage of them are gamers. So what better way to advertise a game than to a large community of nerds? And for those of you who haven't heard of slashdot, you are totally uncool.

WorD! Thank you WillH.

I've never heard of slashdot, so guess I'm not one of the cool kids

Uh huh, when I go out tomorrow night, all of my friends, my girlfriend, and everyone else we meet will stand at least five feet from me, forming a visible ring of repulsion. Such is the degree of my un-coolness.

Slashdot is one of the most popular sources of (almost strictly) tech news on the internet. The community is huge. Sites have been destroyed within literal seconds of a link to their page being posted on Slashdot. I'm sorry, but I don't think Google, CNN, or Ebay have ever done that. Thing is, that average user of any of those sites is not a gamer. The average user of Slashdot is. Even though it tends to be *nix biased, they all know you need Windows for the games. They all pretty much want HL2 also.
