sorry all, i couldnt decide exactly where to put this....

Will Half life 2 be less system-heavy them doom 3, or more?

I run doom 3 at high without shadows (my PC hates shadows) at around 30 FPS (doesnt sound like much, but it feels smooth to me)

it runs fine, but i would like it just a bit smoother, will hl2 run better or worse?

Theorically, Half life 2 should run faster on the same computer than Doom 3. Especially if you have an Ati video card who are better for HL2.

I've not actually seen the game running though.

Half life 2 is very scalable so you can easily custom setup for best performance on your system, however it wont look as good.

i want it to look as pretty as i can make it....

800X600 is fine for games, here are my specs

Radion 9600 Pro 256MB
2.09ghz BARTON (sad i know :-( i dont have the money for a new one at this time)
1gig of ram

doom 3 runs fine (no fps problems whatsoever) at 800X600, high graphics, no shadows.... (turn shadows on and it runs fine, but some spots take a FPS hit)

and how do you know Hl2 will run "much" better, it seems like it has more outdoor areas.... i'd think it would run worse...

and i want to run hl2 on "high" graphics, i dont have to use "uber badass my dad is rich so i get a $1500 dollar computer" mode, just about as good as doom 3 on high mode....

It should run better. I can generally run Doom3 with all max settings with 2xAA without V-sync and it runs fine. I'm expecting to be able to run HL2 with max settings and hopefully a higher AA rate. V-sync chews up fps without a much noticeable benefit so i'd advise turning it off for all games unless you are sure you can easily run the game as is.

How can you play Doom 3 without shadows????

Half-Life 2 will run much better than D3 on that system.

hl2 stress fps test: around 45 (1024x768)
cs:s in-game fps: around 50 (1024x768)
doom 3 in-game fps: around 25. goes down to 7 sometimes. (800x600)

(9600xt + athlon xp 2600+ and 4x AA)
so yes, hl2 will run much faster.

with CS:S , the source engine works great on my mates old Nvidia Voodoo 3, obviously with 800 x 600 and medium / low details, but everything still looks and runs nicely churning out about 34 fps.

I run CS:S at 1600x1200 AAx2AFx4 high settings without Vsync. I get
2004-10-02 17:12:16 - hl2
Frames: 3376 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 56.267 - Min: 34 - Max: 87.

For DOOM 3 I have to run it at 1280x1024 at High with Vsync ON (only 3-4fps diff with Vsync in this game) AA off, AFx8 (default) and get about 50-55fps average.

I have AMD64 3500, Asus A8V and OCZ 2x512 PC3700 dual platinum, AND A RADEON 9700!

I get really bad fps, damn I need a new card :hmph:

The Video Stress Test and CS:S run a lot better at all high detail, than Doom 3 at all high detail. At least for me.

In Doom3, timedemo demo1 -cache

1024x768 on High settting. 63.5 FPS

That's good right?

-If HL2 runs anywhere around that, I'll be a happy camper.

the 9700(Pro?) is fine. Update the drivers and make sure you're running in AGP. CPU speeds would also help out.

You have FOREVER tarnished the good name that is 3DFX!

nVidia bought them out.. but by no means should you refer to a Voodoo 3 as an nVidia card

im sorry

I felt it needed mention

but the 5400 gfx, runs source superbly, at an average of like 38 fps, and no visible image lag, so if you dont want to blow stupid amounts of money, you can pay all of £40 to pick one up at present, which is a bargin, lol

I actually cant believe it myself, but the card runs doom III on medium settings very well too.

where do u get the stress test and how long does it take 2 download or wut-not?

shadows are still there, it just removes creature shadows, which you dont notice anyway because they melt into the other shadows that make up 99% of the game world :)

guys, i didnt want this to turn into a "omfg look at my specs" thread, what makes you think hl2 will run better then doom 3?

HL2 can do all the lighting in one pass on newer cards.
Doom3 does one pass per light on newer cards.
both games then do extra passes for refraction/reflection/other eye candy.

short version ...HL2 should run faster, and u wont need as good a card to get playable performance 'cos the HL2 rendering system is more scalable.

Overclock the card to the limit. I can run Far Cry with everything on high, exept some things that are on highest and 4*AA and 4*AF with pretty good FPS on my system ( see sign)

I get around 56fps in the stress test on an older system.

AMD Athlon XP 1900+
512MB Crucial DDR
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro

Cant wait until my parts come for new system, should run much better then... :)

It comes with CS:S Beta.

feel free to tell me how :)

i dont care about warentee, its not like i would return the card anyway :) (i just wont want to fry it)

If yours is an ATI, you can get ATITool. It does it for you.

However, I would never, ever, overclock my hardware. It's just too dangerous.

i do have an ATI, but i dont want to do anything dangerous.. i cant afford to replace my card..... (i shouldnt even be buying Hl2, but meh :))

According to the benchmarks we habe seen so far, HL2 should run in 1024 high at more than 30 fps on that. Provided you don't trun AA on of course.

Though as said before, I haven't actually seen it run, so it is still speculative

well i want some AA.... i intend to play it at 800X600 (i dont really see much of a downside), will that bump my FPS up a lot? i would like some kind of AA on :) 4XAA and 2X AF would be nice...

Ugh!! I really wish people with x800's etc wouldn't post in threads like this!!

Jesus if we all had x800's we wouldn't have to worry about framerates in HL2, or any game for that matter!!

Anyway I'm currently running a Dell Inspiron 9100 3.2ghz with 512mb ram (400mhz) and a Mobility 9700 128mb overclocked and I get 47fps on Doom3 in timedemo with 1024x768 res and medium details (no shadows, VS on, trilinear filtering enabled) and would hope for 50+ fps with similar settings in HL2 if thats any help to you.

The 9700 mobility is comparable to the 9600 so I'm confused by the people who seemed to be having difficulty running D3 on their machines, if anyone with a similar system wants to PM me I'd be happy to help them tweak their Doom performance levels.

So I guess I can't discuss my ferrari since all the honda owners will have a fit? loser!

No, he was wondering how his system would run so how does it help him if someone with an x800 and all the trimmings tells him that his comp runs great?!!

currently in CS:S my fps is anything between 20-50, and here are my specs:

9600 Raedon 9600 SE
2.8 ghz cpu
512 ram,

im wondering if hl-2 will run better than 20-50 fps heh, its smooth and all, but i want good gfx :naughty: i have everything on high in CS:S, and AF to 4x i think.

This is kinda relevant to my comp so how does Doom3 run on it? Presuming you wasted the 50 quid to buy it I mean..

No Jimmy if you read the original post you see he is asking how will HL2 run on a computer that runs DOOM3 a certain way. I provided examples of how I run DOOM 3 and CS:S with my perticular video card so as to show in a general way how CS:S runs better on ATi cards.

Also- READ the topic! "Hl2 and Doom 3 preformance "

Im not actually trying to start an argument here but the scaling is VERY different!

While there may be only a difference of 2-5 fps with an x800 that could translate as anything up to 10 or probably more fps with a lower end card, which as we know can mean the difference between a game being playable or not. The two are genuinely not comparable.

Like I said this aint an argument but your original post coupled with the 'Loser' comment, to me, makes you sound like a 14 year old bragging about the comp his parents bought for him!!
If I'm wrong then I sincerely apologise but I still dont see how that post was useful.
(although I might just be discriminating against you because Im used to the spoilt 14 year olds that generally frequent forums!)

BTW my name isn't 'Jimmy', Jimmy Page was the lead guitarist with Led Zeppelin ;) :)

I am not comparing my video card to his, Jimmy (I know thats not your name). I was simply stating the difference in game performance between DOOM3 and CS:S (source engine).

It seems that ATi will run Source better than DOOM3 and that was my general take-home message! I only included an example to point out I knew what I was talking about.

The 2-3fps I talked about was the difference when VS is turned on in DOOM3. As for my age, if you must know Jimmy, is 24 and I am a third year medical student.

And please don't ask me not to post about my x800pro, because if I want to know about other users running x800pros and their performance I have a right to without getting people who can't afford them upset.
