HL2 And linux!

Hi.
Will it be a version of hl2 that works on linux?

No, HL2 is a DirectX game, which means there'll be no native Linux version. I've heard things about emulation under WineX or whatever it's called, but I don't know any more than that...

i thyink the question to ask isnt will there be a linux version, but..why would they make a linux version?

Well...
Many people use Linux now, so i think it would be good if they made a linux version!

Yeah, hes right - there are 3 people now.:p

Nah.. i would say about..
1000000?

Yeah, something like 1% of the target group of Valve, really worth the effort of somehow porting the engine to OpenGL.

Its not worth the investment of time and money...

Pitty for those with linux tho... ;(

server - yes, soonish
client (ie the bit you play the game with) - no chance ever

just get cedega free from cvs and build it - i'm sure they'll get it up and running pretty quick.

Best solution is to install windows too and use it when you want to play hl2, othervice use linux :/

Unfortunately HL2 graphics engine uses directX (as opposed to OpenGL in the case of Doom3 (which is available for Linux)) and so port it to *nix would be problematic. I'm sure people will have it running under WINE before too long - once the directX support improves.

Don't forget that Gabe and Mike were both former microsoft employees so they're probably not too hot on Linux...

Don't forget HL2 has rollback support, for DX7 and 8, so I am sure that it will most likely work with WineX on one of the DX modes.

Don't exaggerate like that.

Hahahahahahahaha!

I don't think I will live to see the day when modern games with all the good graphics are being imported to Linux. They should port to Mac too! Since Mac rules so very much.

Unless you are dead now that is... Doom3 already works fine with WineX (native port coming soon), and Farcry, UT2004 and BF Vietnam are all fairly new games which work fine on Linux, so get your facts straight.

Lol did you ever get owned

Valve isn't doing any work on a native client for Half-Life 2 on Linux. There will however be compatibilty for Half-Life 2 on Linux on the server side.

Speaking of getting facts straight, Doom3 uses OpenGL as has little use for WineX which is a direct X compatibility layer.

You are right about the native version, though. According to Tim Besset it runs faster than the windows version.

The main problem with gaming in Linux right now is the lack of 'official' open source graphics drivers.

Wouldn't WineX with Doom 3 on Linux help with emulating DirectX sound...?

and dX input. and the message loop. and the wgl OpenGL methods. and the rest of the win32 library methods Doom3 calls.
little use indeed...

Not really an exaggeration. Gamers who are interested in HL2 but don't have a Windows partition besides their Linux are pretty rare.

Eventually there might be good enough drivers to do DX9, we'll just see how wine works out.

Heh. well WineX is of use, seeing as the native binaries haven't been released yet (AFAIK) so meh
