In theory... couldn't source do this?

...and... for any of you mmo game guys out there... wouldn't you wanna play it?

/me imagines an mmo game where you live in the hl world and go berserk vs. a large combine/rebel force...

/me drools...

planetside meets hl2... i dunno...

well ncsoft is turning the UT2k3 engine with lineage 2 and origin (or whoever is working on it) is also making the new ultima online game on he ut2k3 engine

so maybe it could happen if a developer had full access to the source code, but why not just use an engine meant for a mmo, like netimmerse

I really don't see wy you couldn't do an MMO, but one for a mod would be near impossible. The amount of funding and maintenece for servers that oculd handle az capacity as such would be staggering.

One thing I was thinking of would to just have a MORPG (Multiplayer Online RPG). Basically the enitre world exist on the client, and when you connect to certain people you could organize things in smaller more specific games. Its the same setup for Diablo 2.

The way I fured was that HL2 is based around having immersive single player interaction. So a normal RPG that can be played online would seem more suited for this.

Source could definately be used for an MMO. Almost any game engine can be used for an MMO. You might not be able to do it in source without access to the entire engine. For the purpose adding support for way more players and drasticly streamlining the net code. But it could definatley be done.

Let's put it this way. As long as you have all of the source code, any engine can be used for any type of game. However, seeing that the Source was built primarily for the single player experience, you'd be much better off looking at something else that would require much less effort to use for a MMORPG. In theory it would work, in practice.....it's quite messy. As far as modding HL2 into an MMORPG of some sort, it's simply impossible. You will not be given anywhere near the amount of access required to perform the conversion succesfully.

I thought Source was primarily built around Multiplayer? for the MOD support, and also i think i saw something saying it was possible to make HL2 a MMO...

they did make multiplayer a big focus,, but there's a huge difference between 64 player support and 1000-5000 player support

Unless you made it like Guild Wars. Were certain areas are held on a central server and other areas are hosted on the partys PC's

However, this system is prone to hacking. Someone sets up a server to host a smaller game and then they can make their characters level 800 or whatever. Although it can be prevented somewhat, there would always be a way to hack it.
You could however, make advancement only on the main server and have most of the play time on private servers, where you can still keep your characters, they just don't advance.
Still, this would require a ton of bandwidth on the main server.
It's really just not feasible for a small mod team.

Well its possible to make, anything is, but with time and funding restraints it is nearly impossible. Giving the fact that the UT2k3 engine can handle mmo functions, source should and will be able to as well. One prospect to wannabe mmo makers, is that they could start on it, and get it running with a few hundred clients or find a slick way to deal with that many clients efficiently, and try to get it published. Anyways, enough of my rants from a raving lunatic.

As a programmer myself, I would see it as a bitch to program. I see no reason at all in creating an MMO based on an FPS title. Yes, it would be sweet, but would take forever. If your planning on making a modification, how about just turning it into a stand-alone game?

In other words, yes, it is possible. You would however, need to create a program that runs off of Half-Life 2 itself, for logging in and such, and then tweaking ALOT of the settings. Which namely means, you need to have alot of time on your hands.

Source World? Don't understand; a current modification of some sort? If so, hook me up. I wish to see what it is about.

I see, looks interesting, tho I see no use for my help. Looks like they have everything covered. Good luck with it tho. I'll support it, very much so. Also, If need be, I can possibly buy hosting for it.

we've got hosting covered atm, but i'm sure if you are still willing to donate we can find a place for it :) (oh and by the way, funders get extremely nice benefits in Source World..)

How much are you guys needing? If I see definitive progress and support, I will donate a large sum of money. Not to show off, but I currently do have some money laying around that is just waiting to be used. PM me with what you guys are looking for and the benefits for donating.
