HL2 Beta does NOT exist because...

Everyone and their left nut would have it already. Remember how fast the HL2 source code release went around after those ****ers stole it from Valve? Yeah, it'd be like that except on crack. It doesn't exist because of the simple fact that everyone doesn't have a copy of it 24 hours after leakage. So stop worrying, I'm quite sure they've plugged up any security holes they may have had since the first accident.
 
The obvious truth ;) - But yeah you're right, if nobody has it by now, chances of it actually being real is slim to none.
 
Well the hl2 source was only 31 megs. This 'beta' is supposedly over a gigabyte. So it won't spread as quickly provided it's actually real..
 
They held the source code back for a week before releasing it, maybe the beta will be held back even longer.
 
Or maybe the thieves don't want to release it yet? Or perhaps they were only able to steal a few graphics or tilesets?

I would imagine a savy C++ programmer and a graphics artist could create their OWN graphics and tilesets and implement them for the source code to drawn upon, but it wouldn't be Half Life 2 and since everyone is looking for the thieves now, it would be REAL easy to audit the source of the fake beta and catch the thieves.

At this point, there's too much "heat" for the hackers to try to release a beta in any form without getting caught. Everything has a paper trail of some sort.

And thanks to Atty. General John Ashcroft's new Privacy Act Law enacted after 9/11, the FBI has 100% unlimited access to every single internet server in the world. The FBI has the ability to get on ANY server connected to the internet and find information - without a warrant. They can intercept e-mails, peer-to-peer file sharing, ANY data packet sent over the internet can be scanned en route and/or intercepted... All they have to do is localize their attention and they'll find the perps... I'm not sure yet how far reaching the FBI's e-crime division is, but I bet it's FAR superior to anything the US military or MIT has.

You know when those MIT boys are not wasting their time trying to get the Dawn Demo to run on ATI hardware, they can really do some amazing things...

It's just a matter of time before the HL2 Source thieves are found out and jailed.

that was compressed...uncompressed it was more like 160meg. which is huge...considering it was almost completely text :p

You dont get what hes saying, 31megs is like a 15min download on cable but 1.3gigs will take awhile to spread.

if there is in fact a beta do u think anyone would be stupid enough to release it with the the current mess that is surrounding the situation from what ive read on asite thats posting in here was that the source code as well as a file 1.3gb which seems to be the game was also stolen

Yeah less people will host or download this now that they are scared of virii and the legal complications. With the source people didnt even know that it was real at first so were less scared to distribute it.

I would imagine that a beta does exist.

Releasing a 1.32 GB file without anyone tracking you is the hard part I bet they're still working on :)
 
I downloaded the 1.3GBs of gay porn thinking it was HL2 Beta, and my dormmates found it on my computer. Now it's spreading through campus like wildfire that I have 1.3GBs of gay porn on my computer and it's completely ruined my social life. God damned hackers!

WRONG. United States laws are not effective abroad. They have NO RIGHT to access foregin servers without a warrent.
The feds are in other words limited to US servers.
Also, they are not allowed to intercept emails, packets and other electronic material that does no pass tru a US server.

Infact, this the biggest bs iv ever heard. Just remember the FBI/CIA/NSA got no rights abroad.

And exactly since when does the FBI have any legal rights outside the US ?

The only thing a US legal authority can do in a foreign country is make a phonecall to the local authority's, hand over the information and leave it to them.......

The FBI only has rights in the USA... However you are pretty naive if you think that governments obey their own rules.

I doubt they will go out of their way for a video game leak, tho... Depends how much $$$ in damages the leak is worth.

No, I'm not naive, I very well know that if it really gets down to something important they will pull some dirty strings.

But.... we are talking a computergame here, not a world threatening situation.
I think this gets filed at the FBI, they put two ore three people on the case (If Valve is lucky) and go on with another thousand investigations in computer crimes.

Don't forget that for us hardcore gamers this is probaly something you remember untill the end of days as THE hack of the decade, but the remaining 99.99% of the world's population haven't even heard of this thing called "half-life" and could not care less what happend with it.

And I think the FBI has some other priorities then investigating a hack in a (as it seems like) poor secured game-company (at least I hope they do).

I personally do not know the nitty gritty details of the HL2 source code leak, how or why or whatever. BUT, 30 megs on my connection can be downloaded in 30 seconds. That's kinda hard to shut off once started. They probably saw that leak and stopped it as soon as possible, which is why the whole damn thing isn't on the net. Or it could've been a rogue developer on the project getting back at someone for something.

Aside from that, there is no indication that the beta is in a form that someone can just "download" at will, even at this current state. If it is 1.3 gigs, it's WAY too big to download without notice, plus I doubt Vavle is just sitting on their thumbs after the last fiasco, i.e. servers locked down tight.

And I urge anyone who has downloaded this source code (god knows why), to delete it from your hard drive. You have no rights to it at all in it's current form, you did not work and sweat for years to create it and you damn well did not earn the privalege of playing it if you think stealing someone elses work is cool.

It's akin to turning in plaguarized work to your college proffessor for your doctorate.

I hope someone carves your eyes out with a rusty flaming spoon and feeds them to you through your ass.

Fact is this is a federal crime, regarless of it being a "computer game" or the balance on a bank account; several million dollars worth of digital assets have been stolen, in a case high enough profile to be on global news sites, e.g. BBC.

Is murdering a bum less of a crime, just because they are a bum and not a corporate executive? Nope.

Considering that in this news story today a British teenager is in court for hacking into Port of Houston (in Texas) 's systems and is up for a jail sentence -- and he didn't steal anything. Therefore actually stealing something, and several million high profile dollars worth of something, is going to have some serious FBI attention.

The only way I can see the hacker avoid legal action is if they live somewhere such as China where the US has no real means of finding out who did it and then extraditing him.

However I get the feeling this was done by someone in the US. Just a hunch.
 
the game isn;t currancy however, its like stealing the notes an author makes for a book he/she is writing. Hard to use elsewhere.

but it is also akin to top secret research that has had expensive funding.

how is this going to be charged? and i believe valve has to press the actual charges, they may not? or may with something less than $5 million stolen charges. I dunno
 
mullinator, nope china has rules against what these hackers did also. In facty they have the most stringent rules of all countries on earth for it heh
 
A bank account balance is not currency either, it is a legal credit/deficit balance only. Electronically stealing from someones bank account or using a stolen credit card is not like stealing notes either.

AFAIK, no VALVe do not have to charge -- it is a Federal and international crime to hack and gain entry to other people's systems. It's not as if a victims of armed robbery have to charge their assailants is it? All countries take hacking very seriously, even if you don't steal anything; check the news link in my post above (about the British kid in court by FBI).
