HL2 Cab file corrupt

Halfway thorugh Anticitizen level my PC crashed due, I think, to a dodgy graphics driver (I don't recommend getting the latest driver from NVIDIA for the geforce range - version 6.1.77). Since then I have been getting HL2 cab file is corrupt error messages when trying to reload the game from both my CD and DVD drives which work fine with other discs

Any suggestions out there - I could download the game from steam I suppose

If by reload you mean reinstall from disc, then there is a very common bug in which you get .cab errors if you don't choose to do a full install that includes Counterstrike: Source.

That damn bug caused me a 12 hr headache(literally) installing HL2. It took me a total of 5 hours, two trips to the store, 2 sets of CD's, and one long internet search before I learned of the problem, and finally got the game installed and running. With all the effort that seems to have gone into creating their extra added security measures, you would think that Valve would have known about this and NOT given you a choice to delete CS from the install. Didn't they even try their own install CD's and check out the options? I don't appreciate getting sick and feeling like I'm being used as a beta tester!

The problem is with the Steam dir, i had to clean it out (delete all of steam) due to the fact that i was getting a "cannot copy *****.gcf" or something.

Didn't they even try their own install CD's and check out the options? I don't appreciate getting sick and feeling like I'm being used as a beta tester!

That the game cannot actually install properly from its own install option must be one of the most ridiculous bugs I've heard of.

thanks for the replies all. I have tried the reinstall including CS but that doesn't work. I'll try and delete all the steam files and have another go.
