Ok i'm making this thread because i'm totally frustrated about the direction computer games are going at multiplayer.
I am a big fan of coöperative gameplay, and i don't mean co-op like Joint Operations or Battlefield, but more like Serious Sam, Quake 2, and Sven Co-op. Basically being able to go through the singleplayer storyline with friends.

I don't get why a lot of xbox games tend to have cooperative gameplay features (halo, doom3, timesplitters), but on the PC version they are only apparant by absence.

Maybe im wrong, but doesn't it seem awesome to be enjoying the story with more then just yourself and some ingame npc's? to be doing something else then just killing other human players? I can only hope that valve will include (or maybe add later) a cooperative multiplayer mode.

If anyone agrees with me, please let me know and reply. If you don't, please tell me what a stupid idea it was of me to create this topic.

Thnx.. -Interl@ce

Well sven coop are making a mod for Hl2. They've apparently had help from Valve along the way, so only time will tell if it'll be like the originals or have a strong solid plot.

Also, it might cheer you up to know that Gabes also interested in where Coop gaming is going in the next few years...you never know ;)

I want it to be like Doom or Doom2 coop mode... that was sooo fun.

System Shock 2 is some super fun CO-OP.

STALKER was going to have it but they took it out :( I am still looking forward to Sven.

I too would love this feature, co-op rocks. They don't have to many co-op games for PC because the PC is so focused on online play plus not everyone has the knowledge of setting up and LAN. Meawhile consoles are just plug and play. Causes alot less trouble and e-mail on the part of the develpoers.

Yea same here.
I REALLY enjoyed playing Doom coop way back and pretty recently in HALO (altho with splitscreen)

I would love HL2 COOP

wow that's fast.... replies coming in quickly. It's good to know i'm not the only one thinking this! I often play games over lan with my girlfriend and her brother, and the most fun we had was when we played co-op games.

Can anyone help me recommend some games? i've tried googling it but came up with nothing. We're not into RPG's and we've already been through Half-life, quake 2 and Serious Sam 1+2.

Again thanks everyone for participating in this topic.

Yeah, I'd really like a coop mode, Coop rocks sooo much! It's really wierd that game devs haven't incorporated it in recent games.

to be honest.... i would've bought doom3 if it had co-op....... dm gets boring and the singleplayer story isn't much fun to do alone after 2 times.

HALO XBox but maybe its a bit dated now.
Two XBoxes and Two TV:s and one weekend could still be a winner tho :)

I'd love co-op if one of my darned friends would just get a decent computer. :B

There is someone who's making coop right now, all we gotta do is wait...

I discovered Sven Co Op for Half Life only 2 weeks ago.

I played the whole SP-version of halflife already 3 times in Co-op. I really like it, i hope there will be a Co-Op mod for hl2 soon :)

Too bad... i only have 1 xbox :p

I'm really amazed at the fact that so many great released (and upcoming) games either don't have co-op or had plans to but got removed before release (stalker). Example i'd love to play Unreal 2 co-op or some other games (GTA3 co-op? :naughty: ), maybe even Call of Duty or any other game!

Co-Op rules... I have two comps on a network, so its always nice to bust out some coop.

unfortunately Im not looking forward to svencoop for HL2, nothing against the sven guys... but it just isnt "real" coop, in other words just playing through HL from start to finish, no silly little monsters with stupid models and abhorent animations, no dumb new weapons etc. just HL coop.

thats what I want for HL2, just straight up Co-op.

UT2k4's invasion mode is pseudo-coop.

Yeah but it's not quite what i mean. What you describe is team-based multiplayer. I'm talking about a full singleplayer storyline, but with miltiple players.

id love to see co-op in HL2 as well. Im sure it will be modded, maybe its better modded becuase we will keep getting new updates and stuff for it.

Couldn't agree more, except i do think that difficulty should be a bit higher on co-op. maybe a little stronger/smarter enemies.

Almost any FPS that had full storyline coop totally rocked.

Let see,

Quake 2 coop totally rocked.
System Shock 2 coop kicked ass.
Serious Sam First/Second Encounter coop was very fun even though there wasn't much of a story.
Halo coop completely and utterly kicked serious ass!

Which games did I miss that had full storyline coop?

It totally sucks that developers don't make coop for their games anymore! I hope Sven Coop: Source will have a full storyline coop mode!

Well i assumed that maybe one of your friends have one or why not rent one? :)
If youre old school you could give Unreal(1) coop a try :)

Im curious about this Sven coop, is it HL coop or does it have its own maps etc?

This deserves a total... Word!

This is what I've been thinking/saying all threw my gaming life.

SC has it's own maps, it's fun but not that fun. Ah yes, Unreal Coop. I might try that out with my buddy, I still have my Unreal CD laying around here somewhere.

Both, you can play the SP HL maps, plus ones they've made.

Plot-wise I'm sure that wouldn't make much sense, but I'd still love that too.

"They're waiting for you Gordons, in the test chamber."
"There's nothing Gordons can't handle, with the impossible exception of you."

I'd put more enemies in, with a bit more health and who're smarter/stronger, but leave available ammo and health the same (excluding ammo dropped by the more enemies). Probably about 1.5 times the enemies, so you still come up a little short for ammo that you pick up from their corpses.
Make it so you have to really work as a team, flanking and stuff. That'd be fun.

LOL

more enemies who do more damage.. not have more life.
I prefer realism, one shot to the head kills, couple shots to the torso and you are dead. The AI is what should make the encounters more interesting, not me strafe circling something with my chum wildly unloading ammo onto it.

Realistic damage on both them and us, the creatures with more health in Sven coop are so boring.. because they are easy as hell to kill since the AI is retarded.... it just takes me longer to kill them, thats boring gameplay.

on an unrelated note.
best coop I ever played was Halo on my xbox.. its the ONLY reason I own an xbox.. and HALO2 is the only reason I havent sold it.
it kicks so much as because of the gameplay, it really lends itself to being able to work as a team, carrying only two weapons means that we have mini classes, (he snipes I gun, he drives I shoot) we work so well together.. its just being able to do things like that, that make the game coop phenomenal.

.

Man~ Be able to play the entire HL2 game with your friends as allies would be awesome!!!! CS is great with full of action but running thru the city 17 and coordinate the attacks with your buddies would be unmatched experience!!!

Congrat to me for my first post!! yeah~ :smoking:

My understanding is that HL2 multiplayer is not CSS but something entirely different.... I hope they include the entire map of city as well as all the combines and monsters as NPC just to liven up the city. One mission could be about which team can take down a strider first ;) ;)

Congrat to meself for first ever post!! yeah~ :smoking:

That isnt so hard to figure out. For console games they only need to implent a splitscreen options. Which is much easier to make then a network code suitable for co-op :x

damn :E I was just trying to edit some stuff up~
Is there a way to delete my reply???
Sorry about that!!

I thank you for holding back your flaming urge :bounce:

I disagree. The sven-coop team managed to do it. I've also tried (but it didn't work excellent) a Medal of Honor Co-op 'mod' which worked a little. And some guy made a doom 3 co-op mod only a few days after the american release !! it's only a few kb's big (though it's still alpha). And besides, developers are able to create deathmatch and CTF modes (and in ut2k4 even something with an AI), but can't include co-op?!

Even weirder, xbox has 'system link', which i basically the same as 2 pc's connected to eachother via LAN, both xboxes with separate monitors. Come to think of it, an xbox is almost a pc!

ok so maybe i overreacted a little.... still it shouldn't be an "impossibility" to implement co-op in a game. As for "all we have to do is wait" : i'm still waiting for an unreal 2 co-op mod also 'promised' right after the release of the game

Well that's why I said smarter too. I just found HL to be really easy, even on hard (and I don't play a lot of FPS games), and with an extra player, I think the monsters should probably be suped (sp?) up. If I had the choice, I'd increase their health/intelligence/strength in single player too, if HL1 is any indication of difficulty.

Halo did have an awesome co-op. Perhaps a weapon management system in HL2 would be good, if you had two people. Make it so between you both you can still carry everything, but have a 50-60% cap on equipment. You'd have to really play tactically, with specific roles, but you wouldn't be burdened with having to travel far to pick up the RPG you dropped earlier, thinking you wouldn't need it. That'd be awesome.

As a side note: does anyone know if the weapon management system can still be turned on in HL2? I know they got rid of it by default, but could you activate it through console?

man once again i really really REALLY hope there'll be co-op soon for hl2, preferably out-of-the-box but i don't expect it. :(

Can anyone give a suggestion for a good PC co-op fps? No anti-terrorism plz. And ow, thnx for advising me Unreal 1 btw, playing it right now with a m8 =)

Non-terrorism co-op FPS. When I really think about it, they're in short supply, aren't they? SS2 (as in System Shock 2) is the best example I can think of- they added co-op gameplay in a final patch that's less than 6 megs!

Might surprise regs who've seen my gigantic Sven Co-Op bias, but I tend to agree with most players- what's with high-health enemies?! I find "horde" scenarios far better than a handful of 15-billion health monstrosities. The best levels I've played for Sven have been military-style strategy fests with a small collection of weak but massively damaging grunts etc. (rather realistic by SC's standards).

Nothing puts people off a very capable, adaptive mod like Sven more than sub-standard custom maps. And what the hell is with all the 16+ player servers?! That's not co-op, it's just insane! I can't even think of a map that can cope with that amount without clogging up somewhere: 4-8 is the way to go! And what's with all the maps that can be f*cked up?! Don't you know you can get idiots online?

*breathes deeply*

don't forget Project Eden for PC and PS2..... great game, great co-op!
