HL2 consume RAMs like no tomorrow

HL2 is quite demanding on PC systems. I had 256mb on my pc and the load time is terrible, coupled with graphic shuttering (with medium details) and Windows Low Memory Warning. Well i added in 512mb recently (768mb now) and voila. HL2 is super fast and smooth as silk. load times between lvls are less then 30 secs and i can enable high details... :)

my PC specs.

AthlonXP 2600+ Barton
nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200/128mb 8x agp
Abit KV7 Mainboard
768mb DDR400 Kingston.
DX9.0 & Latest Detonator Drivers
 
Alot of it probably has to due with the physics. All those calculations are certainly not going to be friendly to your system.
 
I got 256 mb ram and i ended the game with it.
Loading times are long but you can get a snack while theyre happening.
To bad there were so much loading times, i almost got fat running to kitchen everytime there was a loading screen.

HL2 doesnt play well for me. I think im going to have to upgrade ram to 1 gig..
 
Yeap agree... heh heh. well i've got low memory warning from windows... hmmm how often do u see this...
 
i got 512mb of RAM and an nvidia geforce fx 5200xt graphics card and i get by ok with the game, loading takes a while and its a bit jumpy on the really high videa levels but its still good

But thats just because of your gfx card i guess.
 
wonder how will HL2 fair on an Athlon 64FX system... yummy...

256mb or ram is not enough anymore, 512 minimum.. my friend is getting 2gb soon :angry:

Were you being serious here or making a joke?

If you're running 256MB of RAM in windows XP you'll be sitting with about 30MB of free RAM left and the page filing would be enormous. HL2 will run great on a p3 1ghz if you have enough RAM.

Anyways, good to hear you figured out where you were coming up short.
 
256MB is enough..... for your video card.

I went for the full gigabye and never looked back. Kinda need it too when I have UnrealEd, Photoshop, 3dsmax, Steam, Hammer, UT2004, HL2, Winamp, Trillian, and 12 firefox windows open.
 
you can never have 'too much' RAM can you, also important is your RAM frequency, mine is sh1tty 133mhz but you can get SERIOUSLY quick ram now but it will only run as fast as the bus frequency of your processor
 
The highest my mobo will let me get is PC3200 400mhz which is pretty fast...wish I could get DDR2 RAM though. Right now I have 512 of PC2100 which I'm gonna upgrade eventually. Paychecks are only so much so gotta buy little by little. Also it's an AMD 64 3000+ which will be bumped up to 64 3700+ once I get the mula. Also I'm gonna have 3gigs of PC3200 RAM too...yea yea

So that means you had 256MB previously. That's barely enough RAM to run Windows XP let alone a demanding 3D game like Half-Life 2.
 
If you didn't originally realize you needed more than 256mb of RAM, you might choose to read up on some tech articles, eh?
 
I'm poor and only have 384mb sd pc133. I'm upgrading my cpu to an Athlon 3000 xp barton for christmas and a decent mobo. I allready have a nice pc 2700 256bm stick of ddr waiting which I can't use becuase of my current mobo. I should be able to get another 256mb stick within a month or two to bump me up to 512mb.

I'm getting a new mobo + cpu for Xmas plus an extra 512Mb RAM.

The extra RAM should take me up to 1gig.
