HL2 crashes to white screen while loading game menu

This is driving me nuts. It's been 3 days since I purchased this game and I've seen zero game play. I get as far as the blurry city screen with "loading..." and then all the sudden my screen turns white and the computer locks up. No error messages or sound loops. Just the white screen.

I've got the retail 5 cd-rom version and my computer is a p4 1.6 w/ 512 mb, Gforce4 Ti4200 w/128mb, and soundblaster audigy. My video driver is the nvidia 66.93 and all other drivers are up to date as well.

I've tried starting with -console in the launch options and was able to get the game menu screen. From there I selected to load the first map and the screen turned black with a loading progress bar in the center. Once the bar was full the screen went white and the computer locked.

I've done the copy and paste bin folder thing without any luck and also reinstalled the game 3 three times to no avail. Each time the game was 100% downloaded and still I get the same results. This happens with CS:S too.

I can't imagine why so many others are experiencing zero problems. Is there something I'm not doing right?

Hmm, i can't help, but i did notice that when i paused SP for +15 it completely locked up my computer on a white screen...
possibly related?

I got it too, with all different hardware. It seems to be a graphics issue as the ATI driver seems to be able to reset the video card when the HL2 window is inactive. But with an active HL2 window, it's a hang or reboot :angry: .

i have the exact same problem jaimescott. absolutly everything u mentioned except for that when i try to start cs: source, i dotn even get the starting screen it just doest come up at all
