hl2 crashes

i set the game(hl2) to 1280x1024 and it crashed. i open it again, and before i can change the settings, it crashes. does anyone know how to change the display settings without being in the game? Cause otherwise i would have to reinstall and i'd rather not spend another 3 hours reinstalling it. thanks.

oh yeah, heres the error it tells me: "failed to lock index buffer in CMeshDX8::LockIndexBuffer"
