HL2 Crashing upon saving

I installed HL2 on my laptop, and everything seems to be working fine, except for everytime it auto-saves... or I save manually.... it crashes (and I get that windows error where you click SEND/DONT SEND). The game does save.... so I can go back ingame and load it up, but its annoying as hell.

I reinstalled the game.... which did nothing.

I have the exact same problem on my HP laptop! I'm getting so damn frustrated everytime it crashes. Anyone who knows a way to inactivate autosaves?

Do you have the Intel 945 integrated GPU?

Interesting coincidence, I've got the exact same problem on my HP laptop (I get a "memory could not be read" error occasionally too).
I've got an Intel 945 integrated GPU.
I started looking around here this morning to see if there were other people with the same problem, and I found a simple fix for it (keep in mind that it will still crash if you save the game manually, but auto-saving is disabled);
go to your Steam/SteamApps/<[email protected]>/half-life 2/hl2/SAVE directory, and set the four auto-save files to read-only (they should have the file-endings tga and sav).
This should, if done correctly, disable auto-saving.
