Ok, I've been playing the new HL2 Deathmatch all night, here are my thoughts... I'm sorta new on the boards but read this if you'd like :)

First off, if you can find a lag free game, you will have a blast!! The ragdolls are freakin' amazing, and it has the whole general HL1-2 feel. All that's missing is the gauss gun... hehe... not a WHOLE lot of weapons for DM, but meh. That's what mods are for.

A couple of bugs and missing features however...

Firstly, you cannot pick up stuff with your hands. This can be trouble for several reason... for example if a grenade lands next to you, you should be able to pick it up and toss if out of your range, instead of having to pull out of the gravity gun and try and get rid of it before it explodes, which takes up precious seconds. We should be able to pick up stuff in our hands like in Single Player!

The Pistol bug is still present, even in multiplayer. You can charge up ths pistol and pick people off from across the map... not exactly my idea of a fair situation. They should fix this ASAP.

The magnum is ridiculiously overpowered. In HL1, a headshot with it was a kill, however in HL2, anywhere is a kill. It's the equivalent of the KAR in DoD, except no reload time and a 6 round clip. Not to mention perfect accuracy. This should be changed... I think many people will agree with me.

Other than the netcode being fixed a tab to accomodate more players per server, I think it's a find MP component. I literally found myself laughing out loud as my rocket launcher victims went sailing over my head. Priceless stuff. Shooting explosive barrels while people are holding them also makes for tons of fun.

One more thing... in Single Player, the gunshot sounds change with distance... in DM, they all sound the same from anywhere, much like Counter-Strike. I wonder why this didn't add this feature? It would be great, as DoD will surely have to have it. It's too cool NOT to leave in.

I'm guessing they just sorta rushed it out the door... I'm sure more maps are coming, my faborite right now is "Overwatch". Hopefully they'll make these changes and fix these bugs... then it will be perfect. A few more gamesplay types would be great as well.

Nonetheless, thanks Valve! Hl2 DM has brought out my inner child

Well, time for a beer and a smoke.

did you notice you can't crouch?

you can only stand up and jump, and its a weak jump? can't jump over low railings in the prison map. I did notice a bit of lag even with a 3.2ghz and 6800gt, and that dang sound bug can be heard at the menu (wondering if its causing my lag).

other than that I am over joyed by HL2DM!!!! :smoking:

I think that's just you.. didn't noticed if I could crouch or not, but I was able to jump over the railing and I always crouch jump, so I guess it still works.. Did you set the right key for it?

What bothers me is Valve's way of ****ing with developers. About two or three teams are making DM for the game because Valve said in no uncertain terms that there will be no official DM component. And suddenly, Valve announces that oh wait we DO have a DM mod for you.

Agree completely. Once again Valve have lied. Although this time it would appear to be to our beneifit. If I could play the damn thing.

they never officially said 'no, never' didn't they?

I can croutch fine because I had to do it on the prison map to crawl through the air ducts.

doh, i forgot i remapped my keys in HL2, just remapped it in DM. crouch does work ;)

Do you have the latest patch? It's working for me now, it's fun but the lag gets annoying and it's hard to find decent servers. I found HL1 deathmatch to be more fun with about 5 players, and I suspect HL2 deathmatch will be the same. It gets a little bit ridiculous with 20 people chucking filing cabinets around, but it's good for some laughs. I do feel sorry for those devs though, Valve lies too much, it's not good for the company image, or whats left of it.

One problem: Sprint. Just get rid of the bar, and have sprint as the default movement speed. You'll die within seconds at the normal speed, and most of the times I did die it was because I wasn't sprinting and the bar ran out.

I tink HL2DM is amazing. Very fun :D :D

BUT... When im playing my HUD is a little messed up because the ammo and the aux power icons and displayed half way up the screen, so its hard to tell when i need to reload because you also can only see half the icon :/

But other than that i can't wait to show my m8's and make some maps ! THANKSA LOT VALVE

I think this would be awesome as a team based MP. Like combine vs resistance like people have said.

Valve didn't said that there was no HL2 DM. :( They probabily didn't have time to make th hldm on the game's release.

I'm just downloading the steam update, i woke up now (it's 10 AM in my country) so wait for my n00b skillz! :D

The server admin can choose to run Team DM with Combine vs Rebels.

To be honest the only problem i have is that they give everyone a manipulator instead of making it so only one can have it at a time.

Giving it to everyone is a pretty stupid idea seeing as how much lagg it can AND DOES cause

There always said the MP component was going to be a surprise. Unfortunately its bad for some of the mod developers that may have started making their own models, but if they've been working on maps then they've already got a head start for the map making competition then don't they. Its not all bad after all then.

One more thing...

Where the hell did the crowbar go?!?!!

It just isn't the same if I can't pull out my crowbar and open up a can o' whoopass with that sweet sweet metal tool.

The crowbar needs to be back in A.S.A.P.!!!!!

i second that

How does team DM work? Can you pick your team when you join? Or does it slap you on a team that has less players?

If it slaps you on a team, how do you know which one you're on? Hit tab?

Need to add

- Crowbar
- Crouch
- Soundcache

The magnum is too damn powerfull!
And it is too laggy too! And where's the crowbar?

But the rest it's just excelent! :D

Funny because I heard months ago the SDK was going to ship with a HL2DM framework to serve as an example for modmakers. The mods can continue because although this HL2DM is a blast, it's nowhere near complete.

The gravity gun does make the crowbar seem pretty redundant. Considering it doesn't use ammo, you spawn with it, and it's better fun to use, and more powerfull than a lot of the guns.

The hl2 mp is an absolute blast!!! Only problem with it as I can see is that there are still some problems with lag, but thats obviously because of all the physics calculations going on :\ it really is ridiculous how much is going on in each mp server!

It's bloody fantastic, I can't get enough of it. The manipulators add a huge new twist to the game, and the great thing is that they are actually useful. I've seen people using the same impromptu tactics in MP as we all did in SP - effective shields using tables, lobbing explosive barrlels, using objects to get to higher places. It's just great.

Just played for about 30 minutes. Lord, its real good fun when the lag is under control.

Nothing better than some bastard firing a radiator at you, catching it midair and tossing it back for the kill.

Somone could esily mod a level or game option to force certain weapons when starting the map and can then put whichever weapons they want in the map.

So you could have just one manipulator and the crowbar too and whatever else.

Wish I'd have brought my computer in to work today.... now I have to wait until I get home to load it up.

Just played on a 24 player server for 40 minutes, it's fun but a little laggy even with cable modem although many on the server had 100 ping and only 5 had 20ms pings. I also played on 12 player server which was great and very smooth.

Positives
*) Netcode seems surprisingly good, shotgun felt accurate and the pistols too.
*) Gravity gun is great and adds a lot of skill to deathmatch, defensively and attack wise.
*) Deathmatch can get boring but HL2 adds to the genre with nice physics and tactics, for example if someone is about to throw a flammable can at you...just shoot the can and it blows up in their face!. Pushing the cars along was fun too, I had a gravity gun duel with another player. We were trying to push it on to each other lol...lasted about 40 seconds :)
*) Maps are nice and big, can't wait for some team deathmatch type maps and maybe even vehicles?

Negatives
*) 24 player server seemed a little laggy, although this maybe because many had high pings
*) No spawn invulnerability, there were a few times I spawned and instantly killed from flying debris!, I killed quite a few when they had just spawned...so it would be nice to have 2 seconds of invulnerability!.
*) Movement felt a little awkward at times, not sure what it was, but it didn't feel the same as HL2 singleplayer.
*) Need to add a spectator mode

I quite like having limited sprint - reminds me of RTCW

It just adds something else to think about in the game - saving and using srpint at the right time gets the kills in :)

thats totally awsome.. I was contemplating buying 3 extra copys of HL2 for setting up on a 4 machine home lan network... we were going to play CS:S .. but now theres a HL2DM Im seriously considering it.

smacking your best mates around with radiators and explosive barrels is a gamers dream :D...

i think its great and the lag is normal because there is no dedicated server and i want them now then i can host 20 people on our server lag free.

can you do a lan with the DM ?

thats impressive :)

theres a lan option on join servers.. but it seems you cant actually create one :/

VALVe will most likely set up some dedicated HL2DM servers at some point. The game has only been out for a few hours, give it more time and you'll see a decrease in lag.

Spawn invulnerability is important, I'm suprised they didn't include that. Are the maps really that small?

As someone said previously in this thread, they should take out the energy meter and set the speed to something sprint-like.

And a specator mode would just add more lag.

It's GREAT.. just as almost everything valve makes.

(that's not fanboy-ish, it's a fact)

It is fanboyish, but that doesn't mean it might not be a fact, too. :E

you know, HL2 MP could actually design a "volleyball" type game with radiators and barrels and gravity guns. just don't drop the explosive barrels... LOL
