Everytime I try to start up HL2 it runs like a charm on the menu, but when I start the game, and it starts the first cutscene, it only makes it through about 5 seconds and the screen goes black and minimizes itself, then comes back up, with the sound glitching over and over... all while minimizing and un-minimizing... =/.... my operating system is W7... >_> any ideas folks?

specs:
graphics: Intel GMA 3100 integrated gprahics
Processor: intel pentium processor E5300, dual core
Ram: 4 gig, 800 mhz
mainboard: intel G31 Express.....

eh... is tht all you need? =/

Yeah, other people have been having similar trouble.

Although I just watched a vid of someone playing HL2 on a 3100, it would be a good idea to get a better card just for future games (and most other present games - source games are one of the least graphics heavy 'modern' games out there, so if you can't run them, you're stuffed with anything else :p).

I recommend the ATi Radeon 5*** series, which is more future proof as it support DX11. Nvidia don't have much to give at the moment at with a decent price tag.

If your looking for value, get the 5750. If you want decent graphics that'll last you the next few years, get the 5770. Try the 58** series if you have the money, but it's prolly not worth it seeing as though new and better cards will be out to replace them soon enough and it would be a waste of money.

The good news is that the rest of your system is pretty good, and has lots of overclocking potential in the future, and your Mobo [obviously] has a PCI-E slot so there'll be no trouble with new cards. (In fact, you system is what I'd buy if I had to do a budget upgrade right now.)

Also, welcome to the forums [it's safer here]. Hehehe you probably haven't got to that bit yet :p

Does the no 'it's safer here' rule apply outside the newbie forum?

Why obviously? He's got a crappy prebuilt machine and the mobo has an oboard video card. Why would it obviously have a pci-e 2.0 slot?

According to my quick research his mobo just supports pci express 1.1. Not 2.0.

G31 is not PCI Express 2.0-compliant.

The 5770 is 2.0, and so are all other recent video cards.

I don't think trying to upgrade his crappy prebuilt system would be a good idea. Not to mention his PSU would probably not be able to handle a high end video card.

Well, sorry, I didn't do enough research into the mobo, but the fact is that PCI-E 1.x mobos are generally compatible with PCI-E 2.0 cards, just at the older technologies speed. I myself have been using a 1.1 mobo with a 4850 for a couple of years now without trouble, running all the latest titles (and all source games at max), and nobody has ever heard of my mobo manufacturer (This is a prebuilt machine I got 5 years ago). So I think it would be fine if he got a new card. It's certainly more cost effective than completely upgrading. And the E5300 is a great value dual core CPU which uses Core 2 duo achitecture, the only reason it's branded as pentium is it's smaller (but adequate) cache. And it's a fine overclocker, even with the stock cooler up to a point. 4 gigs of RAM can't be bad either. You have a good point with the PSU however, but you can pick up a decent 500W one for nothing nowadays (just making sure it has a single 12v rail). I recommend the Antec Basiq, which is what I'm using atm, but a more expensive one would probably be better for a ati's newer cards.

It could even be a laptop?

Try right clicking HL2 in Steam, properties. Go to launch options and paste this in exactly:

-windowed -dxlevel 80

Click ok, try again.
