I installed Half Life 2 on this pc like three or four days ago. Ive been playing it fine with no problems so far and Im almost at the end of the game. For some reason, however, a few hours ago, it started crashing. I open the game, choose load game, and load my game. everything loads correctly, but after about 1 second (in this span of time i CAN move around normally) the game goes away and a box pops up that says "A problem was caused by the Half Life 2 game engine."
It just started doing this out of nowhere. I didnt change anything on my computer and the last time i was on it before this, I was doing nothing but playing the game.
Also, Portal loads up and runs fine on a saved game, and HL2 runs fine when I select new game.
I really do not wanna start a new game at this point so if anyone has any suggestions, they would be GREATLY appreciated.

Try loading a slightly earlier save and see if that works.

Try validating your Half-life 2 files. Right click Half-life 2, click properties. Files tab, verify integrity of game cache.

Also try a slightly earlier save point, or try starting the chapter again, not the whole game.

it does work when i open an earlier save no idea why i didn't think to try this myself. thanks for the help
