hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Anytime I try to play any hl2 mod I keep getting this error

please help! :flame:

Give system specs.

Do you have Steam.

Answer both questions to the best of your ability.

Specs

AMD Athlon XP 2400+
1.25 GB of PC3200 DDR400 Ram
GeForce 7900 GS OC'd
Audigy SE Sound Card

HL2, CS:S, DOD:S, Insurgency all don't work
CS1.6, CZ, DOD, all work fine

have updated all of my drivers, sound, video, directX, everything :(

In game properties on steam click validate game cache or something like that.

Are there any more error messages other than that? In what circumstances does the message appear? Startup? When you reach a certain point in-game? When?

Every time I try to play any of the games, no other error message

Every time I try to play any of the games, no other error message

So, startup.

What is the exact time it crashes? Any intro movie-cutscens (dude with Valve in eye + guitar chord is a likely one) or does it hang when you double click it? Does it show the 'starting up Half-life 2' or whatever?

have reinstalled countless amount of times, drivers & directX updated, HD in check, ram okay, PC running perfectly fine, "Preparing to play HL2..."

Then it goes to the mouse and hour glass thing as if it's loading, then the error message "hl2.exe has encountered a problem* and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience"

blah blah blah Please tell Microsoft about this problem

Urgh... this problem sounds so familiar, but i can't remember the cure...

Bleh

It's 4:10 AM here, I give up for the night. I must get some sleep!

I'll check back in the morning, thank you all for your ideas / contributions :)

What kind of Internet Security do you have?

Reinstall STEAM. Reinstalling just HL2 and reinstalling steam are two totally different things. It solved one of my problems.

Also: Search for virus'?

And Internet Security. I forgot to ask you about that, and you didn't answer DEATH eVADER.

I have reinstalled STEAM, numerous amounts of times, and internet security, to be honest I have no idea

This may not be the cause, but I personally think your overclocked GPU might have something to do with it? I hear the source engine is sensitive to overclocking. Just a thought.

I get the same message. I have updated my driver, downloaded directx 9.0c, reinstalled steam and HL:2, changed my virtual memory settings, ran steam offline/online and lowered my resolution to 800x600 with everything set to low.

The demo ran perfectly fine. The full game freezes and audio screws up and then crashes with the error message when I'm playing the first 15 seconds or sometimes 10 min. This is extremely frustrating. I haven't even passed the second loading point of the first level. Help please.

1.80 GHz
768 MB of RAM
GeForce FX 5200

2.4 GHZ
1.25 MB of RAM
GeForce 7800GS

I can't even enter the game, goes to "Preparing to Launch Counterstrike:Source" then the error message pops up

New Error guys :frown:

Engine Error:

Internal driver error in IDirect3DDevice9:: Present()

Now what does this mean and how do I fix it?

Awestruck try this:

-in console type in -nosound to see whether the sound might might be causing a problem.

-type in -windowed to hopefully stop it from crashing.

-type in -dxlevel 90 (or 81, 80, 70)

-type in -dxlevel 90 with -windowed

should look like this: -windowed -dxlevel 90

I tried all these methods but they didn't work. I've just given up. It's plain ****in ridicoulous. What a waste of money and time.

lol if i could get into console i would type them, and I agree waste of Fing time and money .... HL2, CS;S, DOD:S...fing bs

You don't need to get into the console. Right-click the games in Steam and click Properties > Set Launch Options.

Does your game freeze and the same sound stutters over and over again?

I get that.

Yeah, and one out of three different error messages appear:

1. The instruction at 0xxxxxxx referenced memory at Oxxxxxxxx. The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate program.

2. Internal Driver error in IDirect3DDevice9:: Present()

3. HL2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Usually its the first error that stops and exits the game.

Awestruck, I found another way that may help determine the problem you are having of not being able to even enter the game.

http://support.steampowered.com/cgi...HQ9dGhlIGluc3RydWN0aW9uIGF0&p_li=&p_topview=1

Try that link and go to, Run the Steam Crash Test. It should open up a window and tell you a lot about your system and what needs to be fixed.

For me, everything passed except this:

Display drivers: Failed
Your nVidia display drivers are currently out of date
For updated drivers, click here
Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (Omega 1.6693) (P)
Display Version: 6.14.10.6693
Recommended Driver Version: 91.47
Recommended Driver Date: 09/01/2006
Severity: Very High

The GeForce 5200 was good enough to run the demo on high settings if you could believe that with decent frame rates so I just don't understand what could be the problem.

Awestruck, I was actually looking into getting a GeForce 7600 or 7800 and I noticed you have one aswell but you're still having a problem getting into the game and all your specs are better than mine so I don't even know if getting a new video driver can help me. :|

Good luck lol, I really hate Valve.

A new video driver doesn't give you a new video card. Update your drivers and see if that helps.
