ok ive posted this in the steam forum too but just wanted to see what other people thought...

do you guys think getting a hard copy of half life is better than buying it off steam???

Once again...store. And this was another useless thread, people stop proving geek right.

I will prolly get it off steam some how. Then get the box. Dunno how it will work. But thats probably whats going to happen to me... =/ pay 2x as much. Or i will get lucky and buy the box right off the bat.

hahah your dreaming.

Dod2 and CS2 will be separate expansion packs, and wont be released till next year some time at the earliest.

store for me, im preordering off of ebgames.com

i want to be able to install it anywhere without needing to dl it. plus im a big fan of having the physical box, papers, and cd. its really satisfying to be holding those things, its makes games so much more exciting. i have a whole collection of old game boxes lined up in my closest and its sorta like a piece of art, and intresting to look at (espically when i start counting up how much ive wasting on some of the crappy games...$50...$100...oh damn i coulda bought somthing worthwhile...$1000...)

Either the shiny silver box, or the shiny box with Gordon on it.

I dont trust this Steam like thing.

The whole "download while you play" sounds dodgey, like a warez rip. If it was more like an ISO i'd be happier, but download files while you play? Sigh...

sorry if poeple have posted this before...oh well i agree with the rest of you..the box is the only way to go and agreeing with ReZeroX...it is satisfiing to have the hard copy, you look at it and say "this is what they've been working on for 5 years" It makes you feel like your holding something important...and by god it IS important!

That is exactly correct, probally one of the main reason I have like 60 orginal boxes from all my games. You get to show it off and what not. Also feels good to pick up your copy from the store the first day.

store

i'll probably have a warez'd copy before my legit copy ships.

just like when i bought gta, bf1942, ut2k3, and sof2

I just find Steam wierd...it downloads s**t that i really have no clue what its downloading. Even for Half Life. Thinking to myself "What update could there possibly be that is going to update Half Life?? And do i really need whatever this is downloading???"

The bad thing is if, you got it from steam, and your internet is down. No half-life2 for you.... Buying box I am.

yeah, i'm getting mine from the store because i don't want to have to be running internet to play.

i'll buy it from a website...so i chose store...maybe i even buy it in town :) if i can find it somewhere in this hellhole.. ;P

it sure does...never used steam, not sure exactly what it is either...

heh id rather have a case to show off! and plus, being on my pc 24/7 every bit of fresh air i get is good, even if its just walking to my car to drive 5 min to the mall.

so if u will have go to them u can sit and play there all time? :) ure one smart guy =)

Store of course... I will never pay for downloadable content, that just my pet peeve I guess. I want to get something physical when I pay, the manual, the box, the CD's, not the rights to download a game over and over again.

Ill probally get it off Steam first and if it doesnt work oh well. I personally think Steam has great potential and I don't like going to the store to get stuff. :)

steam takes time to download doesnt it too long on my 56k connection :( even if it does download automaticly then its gonna slow down ure pc a hell of a lot. I got better uses for my internet connecti0n

Steam is a great idea but downloading the game would take to long on my punny broadband :p

+The box is cool!

and also, if you play via steam, if you aren't connected to the internet, you can't play! (says gabe)

I just hope you'll be able to keep your box copy of HL2 up to date with steam.

If you buy it on steam, does that mean that you can go to other computers and play it from there? That would kind of be neat...but I'm still going to buy the box copy.

ahhh i see my poll is going well...and...dear lord, 69 to 4!? well i guess my fellow gamers want that cool lookin box!

Uhhhh..... it's a beta version that is designed to test out how it works downloading entire games. It downloaded the ENTIRE Half-Life game to test this out, not just updates. This isn't how the final version will work.

I've never seen this silver box or read about it... Anybody know if it can be pre ordered yet?

i want to get the box, but i am a teenager with very little income. plus i cant drive yet. so, i am hoping that hl2 will be cheaper if i buy it on steam and i get it right away. i have to save money for: halo (coming out that same day), doom3 (i am a little scared of getting it though), and some other games that i cant think of right now

I've been hearing a rumor that the silver box will be a special edition of Half Life 2 with some extra goodies in it and it will be metal, that's right folks...a metal Half Life 2 box...cool huh? I know I'll buy it

your right...it is annoying though, i think i solved the problem by checking off "do not keep this game up to date" Still don't know though

I want the actual CD in my hand as I don't trust virtual purchases. What happens years down the road when you want to relive the glory days of Half-Life 2 only to find that Valve no longer supports it on Steam, or, more probably, Steam no longer exists? If Steam allowed you to download a copy of the game that you could then burn on CD then I'd give it a whirl (especially if they let you buy it at midnight of the release day so that it would be there waiting when I got home from work!) but this downloading the game in chunks while you play just sounds like a dodgy idea.

mountain man, that is exactly why i don't trust steam. if i'm one of 200 people who actually purchase hl2 via steam (in otherwords, steam completely bombs) then what if valve stops supporting it? according to erikj, we HAVE to log on to steam to play our games, meaning.... no more steam, no more hl2 for me :\
