(HL2) Game physics starts to get real

come on, you can't say that the plot wasn't linear. there was only one ending!

now look at blade runner. multiple plotlines and and endings. that's a non-linear plot.

Half-Life 2's plot was like a movie. very linear, like a movie. sure, stuff like the physics and the weapons make it fun to play over again, but that doesn't mean the storyline's exactly the same each time.... :/

(note: i must say though, hl2 has a lot more plot than doom 3)

I couldn't care of linear it is, it isn't an RPG - it's an FPS. The story is about depth and intruige and originality and that it has.

How does that screenshot show bad physics?
If you tried stacking something like that up in the real world It would never stay up like that. In HL2 when you do that, the bricks would fall over like normal.

Try making a situation like that in real-life, then you'll see it's bad physics.

OR, play a game of Jenga.

Oh, they're bricks, I thought that was part of the wall texture.

unreal 2 and thief 3 both had better physics engine than doom 3 and thoses sucked. all of dooms values were way off corpes flew thru the air like they were on the moon and other things whould take a rocket to move a few feet

Doom III helped explore the physics of shock and surprise
The physics of shock and surprise? As commissioner of the metaphor police, I place these cretins under arrest.

If you want to see a good comparison of the two physics engines, get the Resurrection of Evil expansion for Doom 3 - it comes with their own version of a gravity gun. You'll know exactly how much better the physics are in Half Life 2 after a few minutes of that. Note: Doom 3 wasn't, I believe, meant to be as "physics oriented" as Half Life 2.

You think that developers, who license their engines from other developers instead making one themselves, should stop doing so?

Well, tell that to Epic with their Unreal 3 engine. That engine was made to be sold.

Doom³ engine was also made just to work in one game with a lot of indoor locations (Doom³) and then to be sold for games with a lot of outdoor locations (Enemy Territory: Quake Wars).
Actually, id made the Doom 3 engine to be sold :p
The fact they included a single player with it (Which you all know by now, wasn't that great, yet you all compare HL2 to Doom3, when HL2 was made with SP in mind, but ultimately mods, Doom3 was made to be sold) was purely an idea of fun, they weren't trying to recreate a single player experience or anything, they were showing the possibilities of the engine, and even then, they only just scratched the top off.

Doom³ didn't sell as much as HL2, but it still was an average selling game. They also made some money there so cover the making of the engine and the game.

But indeed, the Doom³ engine was made for future games.

Oh, STFU, AfternoonLemon! At least id Software CREATED THEIR OWN PHYSICS ENGINE, rather than RIPPING OFF FROM AN EXISTING ONE!

Ripping off? Its called, they bought it, and now own a license to it. Get the facts straight troll.

It just annoys me when people compare the two, there really isn't anything to be compared, the two games are on different ends of the spectrum.

Yep, Half-Life 2 is on the good end and Doom 3 is on the bad end.
