Wow HL2 scored the FIRST EVER 11 out of 10 score for Maximum PC... Yes you read that right, 11 out of ten... eleven.

Their only thing they disliked that somtimes the allies bunched around, otherwise it's a perfect game :bounce:

Oh and in a little box they give some tidbits on what can be found in HL2:Raising the bar.

- After deciding to base the game in an Eastern European-like city, Vave decided on fall as the game's season. The developers studied weather maps of actual European cities to accurately emulate the sun's position in the sky at all times.

- The actor who performs the voice of Security Guard Barney Calhoun is also responsible for the voice of the G-man. **we actually already knew this from the cast list on imdb.com**

- The gravity gun was originally built as a tool to explore physics-based gameplay, and eventually evolved into an armament that could be used for both offense and defense.

- Toward s the end of development, Valve brought in Bay Raitt, who worked on the facial animation system for Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Raitt helped Valve improve the game's facial-expressiobn and lip-sync systems.

- Pay attention to the radio commands between the Overwatch soldiers -- they are real-lfie police call signs.

damn that's nice, HL1 also had 11/10 once in PCXL, an old mag that sadly disappeared

Wow, what's this going to do with the Gamerankings score, I wonder?

By the way, I think 11/10 for any game is a little out there. More than perfect? I don't think so.

Meh I kinda wonder that they did have one negative point about the allies crunching up (although maybe it didn't happen to them as bad as they only said sometimes)

so I think they should have given it a 10/10 maybe a 10.5/10 if they wanted to go over.

Still very cool :D they talk a lot about the tech features which is nice

I have always loved maximum PC, and was considering getting a subscription. I guess this is a perfect reason to get one.

agreed.

Our game goes up to eleven!
Why not just make ten better?
... it goes up to eleven!

yes, i know thats not the exact lines. <3 spinal tap

* waits for the rants from people who apparently dislike HL2 (but are on a fansite) to shout how they wouldn't have given it higher than an 8 *

But 11/10 is a bit unprofessional imo.

Reminds me of that site videogamessuck.com (or something like that) where it got an 11 too. And that wasn't very.... err... professional.

Well it doesn't make me feel better or something :). It's an awesome game and my opinion about it is the most important for me. :) It could get 1/10's but still it wouldn't make it worse for me :p

11/10 is very unprofessional indeed. A little retarded infact.

10/10 would have done just fine. I don't see how it's really possible to be better than perfect.

This magazine must have lower standards or something.

Or, they've rated other games 10/10 before but now, comparing HL2 to them, they see it is obviously worthy of a higher score than those... and they can't just retroactively downgrade their other reviews just because they see what a real 10/10 is supposed to look like now.

So they're not saying it's "better than perfect"... just that it needed a new level to be accurately measured against it's competition... otherwise people might think it's only AS good as those other games that got 10/10.

That would be my guess on the thinking behind it anyway, since "better that perfect" is just silliness.

A perfect example of this was in an old Nintendo 64 mag. It gave Mario 64 100%: the perfect platform game.
They then went on, some years later, to give Perfect Dark a 101%, and I don't see how they could have done any different.

I think this forum has long established each company has their own standard. e.g. GameSpot thinks a game with a 9.2 is better than games with 9.3 and 9.4. Go figure

10/10 for a rating does not mean "perfect w/o flaw and can never be beaten" in most mags. It just means, "At this point it is the best in its genre, if not the best on the platform/in general". A sure fire "Can't miss".

I think a 11/10 *may* be silly, but if the point was to say, "We feel this is the best game ever, even better than our other 10s... so only an 11 would fit" I could buy that. As long as they were not putting out 11's every couple months. If they gave one 11 every year to their GotY I could even live with that.

Again, not all rating systems are the same. Just as many would want us to respect, even appreciate, the fact they do not like HL2 to varying degrees--often even disliking it, I think the same people need to APPRECIATE and respect the fact not all rating systems are not created equal.

Fair enough?

Wow, that's very awesome! Well, it sure as hell deserves it. After the Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 gamespy overall goty crap.. :flame:

exactly.. i think they were just making clear that they think this is the best game you can buy.
