A journalist for a major PC Games magazine got this information from an inside source about the Half-Life 2 delay. Take it as you will:

It's not been confirmed and it's only a slight delay anyway - they're still saying this year, but possibly November/December. VU have announced this rather than Valve so it might be a financial move - Condition Zero only gets released in August and they probably want to get as many sales as possible before HL2 decimates everythng.

Don't flame, only trying to be helpful.

I already knew it was cz thats why i wanted it to be cancelled =D lol

This guy is just speculating and knows no more than we do.

The obvious question is which journalist and which magazine?

Cant trust guys named Phil. I say hes making it up.

They say Hl2's release will damage sales. I think they damaged sales enough by releasing it so late to be honest.

Regardless, this guy doesn't have any new information. He's just speculating like the rest of us and has not shone any new light on the subject.

CZ is gonna have huge sales regardless of how close it is to HL2's release since lots of ppl want something that runs smoothly on their crappy pc, and it's CS, that alone will generate thousands upon thousands of sales. Lots of ppl who buy CZ will also buy HL2, so if Valve decides to delay HL2 just to try and boost sales of CZ, they they will make thousands of fans very pissed off, although if they do delay it, it will have little to no impact on HL2's sales since everyone is gonna buy it anyways.

That would surely suck, if it was true.

It would make sense too, specially since Vivendi Universal has been in the news lately for some major money loss problems they've been having. But if money is what they want, then it would make more sense to me to release Half-Life 2 as soon as it was ready...

And if CS:CZ comes out in August, a month of disappointing sales should send them a clear message.

After the latest review of CS:CZ no way I'm buying it. Original idea seemed good but the poor thing has been h4x0r3d to death and it's just some stupid FPS CS-wannabe now. =( RIP CS:CZ (original plan).

If they want more CS:CZ sales, I'd suggest they get a time machine and release it 6 Month in the past. It will be crushed once HL2 is out (knowing this Vivendi will probably delay HL2 into oblivation.)

Why would it decrease sales? Do VU think we only have £30 to spend at one time? Sh1theads

There's an e-mail from Gabe which is kinda relevent.

We'll release Condition Zero when it's done and we'll release Half-Life 2 when it's done.

Anyhow, how would we actually deal with Condition Zero slipping dramatically? We certainly wouldn't delay HL-2. What happens if CZ slipped again? Then you'd have nothing to sell, for no good reason. All the MOD teams would be sitting around with no new engine to work on. And on and on ... If CZ were really going to slip, we'd be far more likely to postpone it until well after HL-2, and port it to Source.

I'm pointing this out not because we have this problem but so people can have enough insight into how these kind of decisions would get made so they can filter them themselves.

So, CZ isn't slipping, and even if it did, it would have no impact on the HL-2 schedule.

The key point is that CZ has no effect on Half Life 2.

But on a different note, this could explain everything. Why VU said it was delayed but Valve said it wasn't.

It would explain "Valve is still working towards the 30th September release date".

Also, it may not be certain yet, I can imagine Gabe arguing. Hence the "No comment". He maybe said that because he wants it to be released on the 30th of Septmeber but VU wants it release later. He may not have much choice because of Contractual Obligations.

Howard Dean says there'll be no delay if you vote for his spamming self.

I really wouldnt trust PC Zone, they have been wrong so many times about things recently, a few examples

They have reviewed CS:CZ? and gave it 79% (They did this 5weeks ago... , it can't have been review code)

They said in the review the 1.6 patch would be available "As you read these words" ... I don't see a patch guys =(

They screwed the world by reviewing a early build of "Mafia" and getting alot of things wrong in the review.

Short explanation.

PCzone = Unreliable source

my name is Phil.

but the point is, pczone isn't the source. Phil Wand relayed the information on his own personal site, nothing to do with PC Zone. The actual source is either someone working for Vivendi, low down or someone in the games industry. Phil Wand is just the messenger who happens to work for PC Zone.

Oh and yes.

The original idea for CS:CZ (by Gearbox) sounded amazing... Ritual seems to have ruined it.

reply to #1

If that happens im going to be very pissed, who wants CZ when HL2 is going to come out :|
i hope CZ burns :D

yup.. i mentioned this exact thing in a few threads already.. but i think pple don't understand what "contractual obligations" means..

i sure hope that HL2 is released on time, but it definitely won't mean the end of the world as far as im concerned if its delayed..

I know I certainly don't speak for everyone (probably NO ONE), yet I'd actually be glad to see HL-2 get a November/December release date. My computer as it is won't handle it's beefy requirements, and as I want to play it on all the possible graphical features, I need due time to save up for upgrades. Less than two months isn't gonna cut it for me. I need a new video card (hoping to snag a Radeon 9800 Pro), and a new processor (hopefully an AMD Athlon XP 2400 or better). Perhaps there's some fans on these boards that can sympathize with my plight, for I'm not about to accept mid-quality settings on 800x600 just to get a decent framerate.

No one's forcing you to buy it any earlier then you want to.

Yeah it's kind of selfish to want a game to be delayed just because you can't play it.

Like I'm not going to want to play it like the rest of the HL community on Sep 30th. That would kill me, both physically and mentally. To know that thousands of gamers across the country are reprising the role of Gordon Freeman to combat the forces of the Combine, and knowing that the only crowbar action I'll be seeing will be trying to break into ATI and AMD in order to get the necessary parts to use a bump-mapped one.

I love these threads, I really really do.

/me dies again

On a more serious note however, can I please just refer you to my sig.
Thank you please.

Stop believing outside sources. Hardly believe what Vivendi says. Until Valve say anything I officially don't know shit. I suggest you all do the same.

Fudge damnit! Where's a mod when you need?
/me looks at tomb stone saying: Here lies: Tredoslop 1990-2003-2003
Oh, and where's a witch when you need one?

It's pure logic that peple wont buy second grade software or hardware.

When hardware gets cheaper, it is usually when something better is announced or have replaced them.

That is why, would you spend 60£ on 2 games, well aware that the first game you bought was outdated, and most likely utterly crap.

If it was delaye it would probably be like, "Well i have the money, and i'm curious"

I've been saying this since the 7th july, that it's because of CS:CZ it will be delayed, IF it gets delayed.

When my arse appears on the front cover of FHM and as the centre fold of Playboy magazine.

Hopefully.

Chris, i think its safe to say that there will always be the types of idiots such as the creator of this thread.. where they can easily use the search feature and find at least 10 threads about this exact same discussion and probably a few more with reference to other mods/games coming out with HL2 (IE. TF2, CS2, etc...)

this might sound a bit extreme but damn maybe i'll use the report feature to report such dumbasses that continuly clog up the forum and lag it to hell with threads that are not needed.. gahhh!

It's also amazing how many people have inside contacts at Vivendi.

And just because someone works at Vivendi, doesn't mean they know about Half-Life 2.

FFS, Vivendi is GIGANTIC. You could ask a guy that works for Vivendi Entertainment or another one of their departments. He wouldn't know jack about HL2. You could speak to someone who works for VU Games itself, but that wouldn't do any good, simply because Vivendi look after so many publishing companies now, eg. Sierra and Fox Interactive that there must be thousands of employees. Not all of them are going to know what the other people are doing.

Think about things like that before you start or believe the rumour mills about delays. I'd say that if there's a delay of HL2 then there's only a handfull of people that would know about it. And considering about 7 people have claimed to have got inside information from this handfull of people - it doesn't really make much logical sense does it?
