HL2 is a piece of jerk! I'll get a refund!

I bought HL2 some hours ago. It took 1 hour to install it.
While "preparing the game", it takes ages, and my CPU is used at around 10%, and nothing is downloaded from the internet. What's steam doing??? It really sucks!
Anyway, I never got HL2 to start. Each time I start it, it freezes. I own an AMD 2.4GHz, nvidia 5900XT, ton of memory and so on.
HL2 is a piece of jerk. I'll go to the shop where I bought it, and I'll get a refund. It really sucks!!!!
BTW, the number of bugs that piece of software includes is just incredible... I'd not have paid more than 1 dollar for it if I knew it's that bad...

Thanks for your input.

Though in what respect does it freeze? At which point does it freeze? Have you checked the settings in game? Can you give us any more information to help us sort out the problem?

HL2 freezes when "HALF LIFE 2" is diplayed with a white font on a black screen.
CS freezes when I try to connect to a server.

I deinstalled it/ reinstalled it. It tooked 30 minutes. That's incredible! Is the game compiling or what?

BTW, when I say "freeze", I mean BIG freeze: I have to hard reset my computer (which is running fine when I don't run that piece of jerk, erm, I mean """software""")

...dude... look further then your nose... since it works with everybody.. didn't you get like a hint... that it's actually your computer (software speaking) that is a piece of shit??

moral of the story: don't go blame other software before you checked your own!

Damn! Just look at this forum! It's FULL of bug reports!!! And you dare to deny HL2 is a piece of shit?

I know what a good software is, and that's stuff isn't. It sucks like hell!!!

I have an AMD 2.2GHz, Nvidia 5200FX, and 512MB RAM, and a 40GB Hard Drive, and it works fine in my computer. It's only a little delayed when loading, that's about all.

Maybe you need to defrag your computer or remove old programs. How big is your Hard Drive?

Just a clue: I started the install around 45 minutes ago... Is that normal? What's that story about "decrypting the files"? I really regret to have bought that piece of shit. I should have used a nocd.exe patch, because it doesn't justify to pay just 1 dollar!!!

Expletives solve any problem. Congrats.

Oxstone, it installs encrypted files, if i am correct, so it has to decrypt them for pirating reasons
This is my opinion, but Half-life 2 was the smoothiest, fastest Frame rate, almost no bugs type of game i played, the best game i played.
Its your C O M P U T E R, take it to some store to see if they can fix it, buy a new one, or fix it yourself
EDIT: Valve was also selling it cheap considering its quality, 49.99, i find that alot of new games are 69.99

There's no problem with my computer at all. The hardware runs just fine for days long with Linux. Perhaps the problem is related to Windows.
I deinstalled / reinstalled HL2, and it still freezes my computer when "HALF-LIFE²" is displayed in white on a black background.
I have around 5Go of free space on my drive.

Your the one thats the jerk. If you cant be patient for an hour or so after waiting for more than a year for the game....then u arnt worthy to play the game.

Go complain to people who really give a ****.

Here in Europe, it's sold 80 USD...
That's a lot for a game I can't even start...

You're kidding? Do you guy eat shit and ask for more?
Do you think that's normal to wait 1 hour for a game to install? Is it compiling itself or what?

how do you know how many bugs are in it if you can't even get it to run?

Moreover, that game FREEZES my Operating System! It's impossible to go back to Windows!!! A properly made software should NEVER do that! Perhaps debugging it before releasing it costs too much?

Just calm down, oxstone. :)

It's normal, it happens sometimes with even the best games. I couldn't run Far Cry for 4 weeks, untill I figured out that I had to switch autowrite off. There are more cases like that - which have to do with your computer than the software.

Can you calmy give details to your problems and the solutions that you have tired (that failed).

It's amazing what formating your computer can make a big difference. If nothing else works, you should try this.

I was having the same issue.

I was rather upset for the first five minutes. Then I turned up my CPU fan and my CPU stopped overheating.

I never had any trouble with other programs, but appearently HL2 was taxing the processor more than other games I ran.

That, by the way, is the only bug I've encountered.

Reformatting, reformatting, reformatting, over and over... While other games perfectly run on my computer... All the details I can give are here: the game freezes when "HALF LIFE²" is displayed, written in white on a black background. And nothing more, I have to reboot.
AMD2400, 768Mo RAM, 40Go drive with 5Go free, NV5900XT with latest drivers.

I'm a developper too. I compile stuff written in C on my computer. I even compile tons of stuff during the night. My CPU is running at 100% for more than 8 hours without a glitch.

Then, you are probably doomed :|

Uh huh... so what have you tried to fix the problem so far?

I think so... I'll get a refund on tomorrow.

I wait so long for that game, and what I discover is a software which isn't fully tested before being released. I can't even play it.
And I really think Steam is THE SOFTWARE to avoid. It seems to be really annoying. I don't want to buy a costly game (80USD in Europe), just to get problems like that. I just want to install it quickly (1 hour is ridiculous, Valve programmers should learn what code optimization is) and play without being annoyed with intrusive software.
My conclusion: that was the LAST time I buy something from Valve.

What did I try? I deinstalled the software. I thought the problem could come from a problem when "decrypting" files during the install process.
However, the SAME problem occured after the reinstall.
I'm not paid to debug Valve games. I PAID THEM TO DO IT (HL2 costed me 80 USD).

I used to have a similar issue with my computer. Installing software, unzipping large files and running memory intensive programs would lock up my computer. It turned out my hard drive was bad, so I put in a new one and everything worked perfect. I don't know if this is the case for you since your other programs work fine.

btw, what did you compile for 8 hrs straight? just curious :)

I compile all of the operating system used on my PDA (Sharp Zaurus - Linux). Hundreds of softwares which I make available to people over the internet.

I'm pretty sure there's no problem at all with my computer. I use it to do REALLY intensive CPU / memory / disk tasks without any problem. I could not imagine any more stressful checks...

i actually havnt had any bug problems, the games more stable than Michael J fox in a harness. I dont know wtf Ox is ranting about... maybe hes just using this thread as an excuse to slate a game he hasnt even played...? id think from his posts that sound more likely..

You are right, I NEVER PLAYED HL2. Because it always freezed my computer when starting!

Thanks for the brain power, for the moment, I have no problem...

I don't think there is suficient reason to ditch that graphics card unless it is physically faulty, though it does sound like a graphics card related problem seeing as he describes the crashes taking place as the game has loaded. He hasn't actually stated if he has tried different graphics card drivers, which is the first thing i would do in his situation. Plus, i would check that it isn't an overheating problem, it may well not be but it's always a good idea to check when it comes to games causing lockups etc. Aside from making sure all the relevant drivers are upto date (maybe an older graphics card driver though if he's already on the latest) and cooling isn't an issue, the only other thing i can think of at the moment is to uninstall the game and reinstall but he says he has already tried that.

Oh my god...

oxstone, you are such a stupid dumbass that I registered on these forums JUST to flame you...feel special!

I don't give a shit how much of an expert you say you are(because you do C shit? Please.), you are obviously an idiot if the only thing you do is flame these forums about how you are returning the game instead of actually trying to troubleshoot the problem. You are such an ignorant waste of flesh that it doesn't even matter anymore. You should just plug your PC in, clutch it tightly to your chest, then jump into a tub...thus eliminating two queers with one stone.
