oxstone, chill. Most of the problems ppl have with HL2 are a result of not knowing how Steam works. After you install HL2 and make an account, it'll decrypt your files and update HL2/CSS (whichever you choose). Keep the moniter open at all times and check its status. DO NOT try and run a game when it's incomplete. In the moniter "100% complete" is what your should be looking for, not "99% complete" and the like.

Understand that a majority of the community is playing HL2 without any major problems. If you encounter a problem, think about what you did and see if there's a more 'ideal' or 'intended' way of getting about it. Steam is not perfect, you have to know how to use it. Don't be so rash, abusing Valve and Steam doesn't really help anyone now does it. Relax, have a beer.

I have an Intel 1.7GHz, Nvidia GF3 500TI, and 512MB SDRAM 133, and a 80GB Hard Drive, and it works fine on my computer.
The only thing that is slow is the loading time but it gives me time to get some coffey or a beer when i play
