HL2 is costing me $$$$

Same here...I built a system for around $1500...

P4 2.8GHz 800FSB
1024MB Corsair PC3200LL RAM
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Asus P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard (awesome board btw...)
WD 36GB Raptor HD
...and a few other things like a nice Lian Li case and an Antec TruPower 480W PSU.

Sorry, AlienWare, Falcon NW, and all those other companies are way too pricey for me. I'd rather build the exact same thing for thousands cheaper, thank you :)

ati 9800 water cooled ...
2474 canadian = ~1800 us ...

oh yeah and a 19'' LCD monitor

Not in all a bad deal, but 1100$us (assuming the monitor was about 700 by itself) hasn't been a good price point for about 3-4 years now. My current thinking is to spend about 800 american max for all the new parts required for a complete system. Not top top of the line but very very good (this would currently include 9800pro). Then you can upgrade again sooner with the money you didn't spend about a year later, but then you'll get something faster than you would have bought originally. Generally this means buying new motherboards (with RAM, usually) every year and a half and then getting a new proccessor every 8-12 months.

Secondly, I just don't like overclocking--too risky, and when something crashes, it's a pain to have to disable overclocking to make sure its not the problem.
