HL2 monsters that freak you out the most.

OK, Poison Zombies no doubt. Word to the peeps talking about the laundry room in nova prospekt - that was the scariest bit of the game - you clear out the combine, scout out the narrow tunnel find the health stash and bam he's standing right behind you. Also the zombie tunnel on highway 17, or the first house on the highway with the first poison zombie you come across on the top floor. Its just the fact that youre so vulnerable...even if they hit you once you have 1HP...

I dont really understand a few things peeps are saying. Fast Zombies - ok, the Ravenholm atmosphere makes them scarier, but like someone said, they do very little damage tbh. You could stand there all day shooting them with the USP and they still wouldnt kill you if you had decent health/suit power.

Also the roller mines and manhacks. The Grav Gun so totally owns these its not even funny. Just grab the manhacks one after the other and blast them at a wall - bang. Theyre gone.

And Antlions are a piece of cake - run them over with the car, or double barrel shotty to the face and theyre down. Most of the time theyre your allies anyway.

Definitely the poison-zombies. Bloated, black with infection... shambling terrors. They're the toughest enemies matching your size, and the 'crabs they carry make them a real problem in intense parts of the game (like Nova Prospekt). I'm never satisfied dealing with them unless it involves fire.

I was playing "Highway 17" going through the game a second time, and early on in the chapter you come across some abandoned, ruined houses by the coast with some of these guys in 'em. I entered one of these places, went up the stairs (had to stack something to get up on them, they were broken at the lower end), and, thinking I was alone, went into one of the rooms. Suddenly, I heard, from right behind me and at terrifyingly close range, the erratic, raspy breathing (different from the thick, clogged type they usually exhibit) of a poison-zombie. I spun around and was practically face-to-face with it. It had kept quiet and snuck up on me!

Anyway, I literally froze. I had the SMG out and just emptied one mag into it before the combined assault of the zombie and one of its 'crabs finished me. Poison-zombies actually swipe at you if you're close enough. After I'd died, the poison-headcrab began crawling over me. It was revolting... the movement was so realistic, I felt it was going to crawl out of the screen and latch on to me.

Fast zombies also frighten me, although it's more because of their behaviour and appearance than their threat-level. The sequence in Ravenholm immediately after Father Grigori hands you a shotgun, when you have to face off against a bunch of them, was harrowing. When I got to the roof on the opposite side and triggered another assault, I actually ran inside the building and shut the door, thinking I'd be safe (for awhile at least)... and then they smashed in through the ceiling. Then I called the elevator up and another lot of them came for me...

After that part, I always tried to make as little noise as possible when making my way through a map/chapter where stealth would be useful. The Manipulator didn't help... always thought I was making too much of a racket whenever I used it, because of the humming sounds it made whenever it engaged/disengaged. Not that it mattered, but it still grated on my nerves. I played "We Don't Go To Ravenholm..." at night too.

Could you err....sum it up? :p

Brrr. Exactly what it was like!

I still avoid any part of the game that has these things in. They freak me out too much.

Poison zombies&headcrabs

Nothing like having a headcrab jump riight into the middle of your view when you try to exit a pipe/vent

Agreed. First time through the game, that took me completely off guard, and I ended up suiciding after releasing a USP grenade and a rocket. After being revived, I didn't go near that place. Second time through the game, overwatch secondary fire took care of it.

Something else that freaked me out: when you return briefly to the catacombs after disabling the first generator. The whole place is crawling. There's a vertical beam that, when smashed, brings down 3-4 poison headcrabs. Again, suicided first time, and overkill the second time.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the rollermines. Those things a gimmie the jibblies.
Not nightmare quality, but they're really surprising popping up out of nowhere in large groups.
Add that to near-invincibility, relentless pursuits, and their love of tossing you off cliffs and you've got a recipe for crazed shotgun fire.

But the best part about the rollermines is tossing them off the cliff into the water. Then, wait for it... BANG! So satisfying.

Yes. Father Gregori rocks. I wouldn't like to play an expansion from his perspective, though -- every time I play through the game, I'll always dread playing through Ravenholm.

How many of you have seen this:

You'd probably only have Ravenholm, considering Father Grigori wouldn't want to leave the place ("as for me... a shepherd must tend to his flock"). Unless he turns out to be a former nuclear-research scientist (gone mad) and gets picked up by either the movement or the Combine. That'd be really interesting...

Nova Prospekt, I think? You climb up through a hole into a long corridor with a high glass-ceiling, double-doors at the end. Reaching those doors triggers a fast 'crab attack, they come down through the glass. 3 or 4 of 'em.

That was an excellent chapter.

Generators? Catacombs? What are you talking about... Nova Prospekt? That 'generator disabling mission' in Anti-Cit one?... or was that other mission? Jeebus, i need to play HL2 soon.

Bah, fast zombies were scarey because they -were- scarey. Because of the environment, not the threat factor. Although there was a rather large threat factor when i would suddenly go beserk trying to shotgun them and continually falling off roofs.

Fast zombies are scaryier when they're -coming- for you. When they arrive they just stand in front of you and scream, then you SHOTGUN them in the head.

In Route Canal and again Water Hazard, there are several times when you go through little tunnels only to find the mortal remains of resistance members and innocent citizens. Occasionally you see the corpses of headcrabs or zombies. Suddenly, you spot some health packs/batteries/ammo. You look around, see nothing, and slowly approach.
Suddenly a zombie bursts out of the rubble or water and begins clawing at you.
Never fails to scare the hell out of me.

"Generator" as in the thing that provides power to a suppression-field. There were suppression-fields in Nova Prospekt that prevented you from moving about the place, you had to shut them down in order to move on.

Fast zombies only stand there screaming in front of you after they've slapped you about a bit. I find it hard to get them from a distance. Although there was that one time when I'd exited the mines and had to face one that came leaping and bounding over a train-carriage at me... I pulled out my .357 and got it in one shot, from a long way off. Probably the best I've ever taken.

Yeah, that was sudden. First zombie I'd ever come across, just after you get the SMG. It was hiding behind a wooden set of planks. It was down a really long tunnel, though... being aware to the oppressive gloom and silence around you, you'd expect something nasty to happen.

Sorry about being unclear. The part I was talking about is in Follow Freeman, I believe. In a City 17 town square, you have to guard Alyx from the seemingly endless onslaught of combine soldiers and overwatch while she disables the generator shield, so you can shoot it with your gravity gun (not sure what it powers in that case).

You get separated from her and have to climb down into a pit/valley because the bridge has been destroyed. After going underground, you encounter some manhacks (in the Create New Game window, this scene provides the screenshot for Follow Freeman) and later, combine soldiers fighting zombies.

I know where your talking about now. The sewer and industrial plant after disabling the generator :)

Fast zombies.

But what was really missing were water monsters. God i hope aftermath has some water monsters.

Hey, I remember seeing something when the teleport scene started. Near the end(After you teleport into Dr. Breen's office for the second time) you teleport into deep water and if you look down theres this sea monster about to eat you. But then you teleport real quick before it can do anything.

Bleh.

P.S. My FIRST POST! YAY! Hi guys! =D

An icthyosaur. I was kinda glad I didn't have to face any of these in the game, although you do have to take on a few in HL1.

And welcome.

Striders. Honestly. THey're not disturbing. Its that part where one bursts out behind you on the street, and your fighting alone in this abandoned building. On hard, i was scared stiff.

Heh... it wasnt really a monster that scared me, just the fear of it...

Every water part in the game I was keepin a close eye on the water for an icthyosaur... lol :)

Bah, Striders arn't scarey, in scarey terms. They just kill and kill and kill! Although that bit in the tunnel was quite freaky the first time, not least because i still had 2 restistance members with rockets who JUST WOULDN'T FIRE at the strider. I killed the strider with their ammo.

Woo!

Oh, and now i know what you're talking about.

Yeah I hate that part.
Your just walking, seeing a Combine Soldier shooting at you. You kill him, walk on, then hear the sound of something BIG behind you, turn around, and...

Wats the big deal. couple of pistol shot or a crowbar wack thats all it takes.
Good target practice.
Try on Hard. Once they get behind you, your screwed.

Biozeminades
Wut are they?

They're a mystery... No one has ever been able to make or post a screenshot, and if someone did, in less than five minutes the post was deleted and the user was banned. Not just banned, he dissappeared from the internet and from the earth. Every trace of existence of that person dissappeared into thin air. I have collected data about them, fearing for my own life... Some are too traumatized by it and refuse to tell what they saw, others dissappear never to be seen again and others refuse to believe it... But one thing is certain...

Seconded. And the water leeches were scary too.

Was there anyone who felt sorry for the Zombies too when they were burning with that weird preacher guy? heh

The water leeches!? I never even had time to get a good look I was dead in seconds!

I'm not sure, but i don't think the leeches actually attack you. You start taking damage as soon as you hit a certain zone of water, and then you die.

I think it's built into the maps as an environmental hazard, rather then a monster hazard - the leeches are just there to look pretty while the water kills you.

(yes yes i know in 'real life' the leeches would be the ones killing you, stop looking at me like that.)
