HL2 MultiPlayer

Hi y'all,

I've been reading this post for more than a year now, but i never heared any news about half life 2's multiplayer being CS:S. Before CS:S was planned, I've read several interviews with Gabe where he said something along the lines of: I play HL2 MP everyday.

It was the only real comment he had made about it, and therefore I remember it. Has valve ever really said CS:S is going to be released as HL2's MP or do people assume it to be its MP?

I think the majority of people on this forum think it isn't CS:S, and it's something else. But there's still no 100% official word on it. Valve simply refuse to comment on it for some reason.

Use search next time, this has been discussed countless times, and evidence for both sides has been presented and discussed to death already. :)

Valve have released no details of Half-Life 2's multiplayer THEREFORE there is clearly going to be a HL2MP!!

It's either being kept a secret or it there is no hl2mp. It's existence has been debated a hundred times, thousands of emails have been sent to Valve and nothing...

Believe what you want.

maby tfc 2 is hl2 mp bcos tfc was pretty much the same as hl... im still only gunna play hl2 and occasionally cs:s wen i want multiplayer. :)

not again....:(

the HL2 leak had an extremely incomplete multiplayer option... but is was there nontheless .. apparantly...

The only thing I've read is Gabe's comments saying that it would be "something special" and that he "plays it all the time". Unfortunately, I can't track exactly where he said this, but I have trouble believing he would have called Counter Strike: Source "something special".

I don't think CS Source is the HL2 multiplayer, it's just a mod like cs was for hl1. And because of the fact that they haven't revealed any info I think they have developed a few more multiplayermodes that we haven't seen in other games (remember that the physics and the gravity gun offers a lot of weird possibillities).

1. Maybe a sort of dm mode and the only weapon you have is the gravity gun, and the map is full of objects like crates, barrels, tables, boxes, exc. and with that you have to kill the others.

2. Or a sport mode where you have 2 teams and 2 goals and you have to play a kind of soccer with your gravity gun and a ball.

3. Another sportlike mode. Now you have to throw an object at a target (with your gravity gun of course) and the more precise you throw the more points you get.

4. It's a 1 vs the rest mode, the one is a Strider and the rest is the resistance. The Strider has to try no one survives and the others have to try the Strider doesn't. The Strider has a lot of health of course so the resistance has to work together as a team (as we see in many other multiplayer games)

5. A vehicle dm mode, a big map full with buggies, hovercrafts, cars and maybe even flying vehicles. Fun guaranteed!

Yup, and all signs point to the belief of no stand-alone MP being the correct one. We've been over it a million times, but it all boils down to this: there is absolutely NO reason why Valve should refuse to answer "yes" or "no" when asked if HL2 has it's own MP, unless it doesn't have one and they don't want to (further) disappoint fans. Even if the MP is some huge, super secret mode that will revolutionize gaming and give out blowjobs, answering "yes" would not give away anything about it.

Actually, I see no reason why they sholdn't be able to confirm the conception that CS:S is the only MP content shipping with HL2 unless is ISN'T. Frankly they'd have been better off just clearing that up early on instead of stringing the fans along like they have unless the MP is a big surprise (maybe even the real reason the game was delayed a year?)

Personally, I'd be pissed off if it turns out there is no MP, while the whole time Valve could have clarified the obvious ambiguity. Plus, CS:S would suck as MP for HL2 mostly because even though they'd ported it to source, it is not as fresh as HL2 would be. Surely they wouldn't try to sell us an old mod, updated to run on HL2 engine. That's like reheating the pizza, inexchange for a fresh pizza. Actually, it would be more like giving us warmed up breadsticks instead of fresh cheesesticks to go along with our HL2 pizza!

vinnie_nl U all the things u suggest that use the gravuty gun would be impossible to do in multiplayer. The physics aspect is MUCH reduced as seen in cs:s

i dont know why so many people expect an hl2 themed mp. Valve said that cs:s was the official MP of HL2 and have mentioned nothing of this hl2 mp u speak of. u guys use some weird logic!

From Doug Lombardi (August 13th):
Have you finalised how CS Source will be distributed?

Lombardi: It will be included with all versions of Half-Life 2, and made available as a stand alone purchase.
Full article here (sorry you have to register).

This does not say whether CS:S is the only MP packaged with HL2.

FYI: this article has been posted before, so its nothing new.

There's nothing official about it until you show us a source that says CS:S is the official MP for HL2.

I read somewhere that HL2 multiplayer will be something that uses havocks physics engine to its fullest..... eXtreme Bowling.

I can not wait.

Weren't you paying attention around the original e3 announcement? They clearly said in interviews that there was a mp and that it's a secret. This was before they even started on the source ports. The strange thing is how they won't confirm its existence any more. They won't even answer the question when asked. Maybe the plans have become uncertain. Perhaps what they worked on wasn't good enough or will wait for an expansion pack, or they're just messing with us, holding out for a surprise. But the community didn't pull this out of our collective asses. Valve made clear statements about it very early on. It's just that ever since they started talking about the Source ports, they haven't said a word about it.

What's the physics in multiplayer then? I saw a CS: Source movie where the objects seemed to react normal when a grenade detonated next to it. And I've read somewhere that there will be realistic physics in multiplayer and that will not cause lag because HL2 uses a client and server side physics system.

And I expect a HL2-theme multiplayer because HL has it, and all other games have their own game theme in multiplayer and not from a mod. At least they can put DM and TDM in the game, I hope there are some more gamemodes too but if not it's better than no HL2-themed multiplayer at all.

Exxxactly. At least stating the bare minimum: "There will be an HL2 multiplayer component" would help sell more HL2 even if they revealed nothing else. Saying "There is no HL2 Multiplayer component" would drive people away which is why there will not be an "official" answer on this until near release -- to minimize the negative effect.

What negative effect exactly? No one is going to not buy this game because of a lack of MP besides CS:S. Anyone who says otherwise is full of it. Maybe they just want to surprise us? Who knows. Who cares. HL2 is all about the single player and the mods.

Well, since VALVe is still being secretive about the MP and CS:Source is no longer being a secret, I'd say that there is something more 'bout HL2's MP.

Valve aren't being secretive about the multiplayer, you have to apply dates to the information thats been released already.

Also, as has already been said, any multiplayer the public wants, will be coded.
The HLDM you guys are asking for, is just HLDM Source, i'm sure it will arrive pretty quickly.

Wait a minute. Anyone who follows the hype is a hardcore gamer and WILL BUY HL2 NO MATTER WHAT. If a non-hardcore gamer cares about mp so much, they're not going to be fooled by Valve's prerelease silence: when it's released, they're going to find out. Duh. This BS about hiding basic facts of a game before release to maximize game sales make no sense whatsoever.

Read this email : http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?p=471042&highlight=manipulator#post471042

Now you know why there won't be a manipulator in the mp.

ow yee...TFC really looked like HLDM...

Maybe it will be TF2 because theres alot of reference to Team Fortress 2 in the hl2 beta/leak even in the hl2 source code leak there was reference to TF2.........

I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that CSS is the only mp.

Use logic. If it WAS the only mp, they would have confirmed it. There is NO WAY they would just keep silent and when the game is released, say: "Haha there was no other mp after all, you fans are all idiots".

Or would they?

Team Fortress 2 maybe =) Unlikely though... maybe later on.

Nope they said thats coming out later on.

There's a whole generation of PC Gamers now that only give a damn about the multiplayer aspect of a game. Sad, but it's true. Those people would dismiss HL2.

And like someone else mentioned, no MP mode would mean a lot more people pirating the game.

I've heard from a person who went to valve could confrim that there was a HL2 multiplayer.

I like vinnie nl's idea about the strider. I always liked those kinds of games. kinda like tag.

How does no multiplayer = more pirating? That doesn't make sense. People will pirate the game if they want it and don't want to pay for it. No other reason.

Sure it does! Valve isn't worried about the "Fanboys" (ppl here) who will buy no matter what or the "Hardcore MP gamer" who won't buy at all if there is no MP.

They're worried about about attracting ppl sitting on the fence (who don't have unlimited money) trying to choose between buying HL2 and say Doom3 or some other game. "Hmmm, this one has MP and this one doesn't?" "Hmmm, this PC Mag's reviews says it has excellent graphics, but this one says the shadows in the engine are 'off' and 'show through tables.'"

It's hard for us here, perhaps, who are big time HL fans to see that there is a large market of people out there who could take it or leave it. If another game has more features and better graphics, ppl might be swayed to get it vs. HL2. EDIT: and thus, Valve doesn't want a lot of press about no HL2DM to be lingering out there for months. It will generate negative hype that will affect the fence-sitter.
