HL2 multiple install question (steam d/l)

Ok first:
Yes i did use the search function, and yes I have spent quite a while looking through posts but I didnt find anything identical to my situation - so heres my question:

Basically I am hearing all this stuff about HL2 will be out on steam first and blah blah blah whatever....... So if I decide to download from steam, can I then burn the download to a CD or DVD and take it and install it on my laptop and PC at work for nightshifts to play single player (at work can only use the web for http and email). Obviously I wont be using more than one copy at a time - but surely I should be well within my rights to do this. I do not want to have to activate every copy over steam and all that bollocks.

Flame me if you want, but I think it is a valid question.

Currently, offline (no internet connection at all... not just playing SP on a machine with an internet connection) play is not implemented in Steam... for now it will have to connect to at least validate the game.
Though, I have read that Valve are working on adding that functionality to Steam soon.

A related question:

Can i setup 2 steam accounts, then copy (or move) the downloaded files into the other account?

I'm guessing no, because that would breach some kind of contract of some sort...

The reason i ask is because, having installed steam once, i had the genius idea to delete the HL directory thinking it wasn't needed. Needless to say it was. So i had to re-install steam, only this time it's not converting my HL 1.1.1.0 install into steam (thus meaning i'll have to download HL).

Thanks for the reply :) I understand that this is the case if I was to buy a copy from the shop, I was just wondering if it would be the same if I downloaded via steam (being able to burn to disc and install on another machine without steam etc)

The way I understand it... the only way you will be able to play single player offline is if you don't use Steam at all.
If you buy the game in the store and don't use Steam to run the game (if that is possible) you should be able to play single player without an internet connection.

If they fix Steam to allow offline games to run without an internet connection none of this will matter...
