Could this be arranged? I know this is a HL2 site at heart, but since our community seems to already be coming together to play the demo of the game as a team, I think it would be nice to have a server of our own, configured the way the players would like it the most. It would be easier to arrange play times and we would all know what server to go to and meet. I would have no problem waiting for the full game to come out until we decide to make a server for it. We already have CS:S servers for the community to meet at (rarely used i believe), so I don't see any reason for a BF2 one to go up also.

that'd be nice, and while your at it, make it near me so I get a good ping \o/

i agree... but we might need to pitch in to a trusted members paypal account for it. shouldnt be too much if we all give a buck or 2 a month.

I'd be willing to donate a bit of money as long as i get a decent ping :E . I think having our own server would be a great idea because i know we have atleast 40 hl2.net players.

I'd play on it but I wouldn't donate anything for it.

Since the CS:S servers are usually vacant, I think it would be a good idea to take one of those down and use it as a BF2 server. That way we still have a CS:S server up for the few that use it, and our very own shiny BF2 server.

IDK, it would be fun to play together, but only the EA (and trusted partners) servers count rank.

I'm getting fiber optic internet service soon, sometime this year(should have been a couple months ago).

What kind of internet connection is required to host a decent, fast server?

The FIOS is 15mbps down / 2mbps up

I think that would do it.. but it'd have to be at those speeds. I don't know about the reliablility of Fiber Optic enough to know how close you'd actually come to your theoretical limit. (EG, ADSL, Cable never run at full speed)

meh, 2mb up isn't really a lot.

Well then i'll just use it to kick the ass out of the internet and download everything is has :-P

Its only 50 bucks a month.

well I'd love to help, as I have a puter that would be just dandy for a server, but I wouldn't get a fast enough connection.

I'd chip in though

I think that could be looked into...

Munro would probably be the one to give the final say if we could host one or not.

Yea it would be up to Munro. So are we looking at a 32 player or 64 player server? I would like the 64 player alot better but it would be more expensive.

Well i just figured he takes care of the css servers.

 The servers are donated by b33f.co.uk, in an arrangement that if I recall correctly, wasn't made by Munro. I'll see what I can arrange.

Oh, I just assumed that since Munro is the site director it was his call to make.

For a home internet connection it is, but i agree. 32 or 64 people trying to use just 2mb of bandwidth wouldn't work. Everyone would be getting sub-dial up speeds. :x

I would only be up for a server with the full version if it counts rank, otherwise I prolly won't play on it at all.

I think our own Halflife2.net server would be a great move. We already pratically take over all servers we play on, anyway!

There is one thing to take into consideration, though: I'm guessing that the novelty of the full game will fade in a month or so, leaving only the truly hardcore players/clanners playing daily. Then, take that small number of players and divide it into about 3, due to time zone and geographic differences and so on, and you have a depressingly small number of people playing at any one time. FURTHERMORE, we all know that Battlefield is most enjoyable when played with many, many people at once to create that warzone-like atmosphere.

So, to translate all of that rambling into something slightly more coherent: Would the use be worth the cost? Are members willing to make the commitment that such a server would entail?

I know that I tend to play games obsessively and burn them out - I will probably move on from Battlefield 2 after about a month. Add that to the fact that I'm going to be a starving student in my freshman year of college this August, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to make any sort of commitment.

Won't happen. EA aren't releasing the trusted server kit.
