Hl2.net typography (large pictures)

This was my first attempt at making a typography in PS. I spent about 1-2 hours on it and am relatively pleased. I tried to include as many HL2/Hl2.net/Valve related words as I could, and even threw in a few forum members than came to mind. If you're not on there, its not because I don't like you. Eventually I ran out of words to think of and duplicated every word. I have them in different resolutions if any wants it as a desktop background. In the future I might make different colors but for now I'm burned out.

Enjoy. I have one in 2560x1600 but the filesize is too big for Photobucket, pm me if you want it. Some of the edges are a little rough.

This is really good. I love how you subtly added Misc 1 and Misc 2 in there.

not bad, it could have been better - I like the gradient effect. nice font too.

Update: I did a quick clean up of some of the edges and added a 1440x990 resolution.

You messed up resizing the images for different resolutions, methinks.

Stop stretching the image, but crop it in its appropriate resolution ratio (4:3, 16:10, etc) and then resize.

Otherwise I think it's fabulous.

Yeah, Wizard is right. You shouldn't be changing the aspect ratio during a resize. You need to crop it to the correct ratio first.

Oh my god what did you do.

THE JPEG ARTIFACTS, THEY BURRRRRN!

Yeah, Wizard is right. You shouldn't be changing the aspect ratio during a resize. You need to crop it to the correct ratio first.

All I did was go to Image>Resize Image, then downsize it to the resolution. Didn't even think about aspect ratio mostly because I didn't know what to do. If anyone wants to tell me what to do I'll change them.

Take the square select option. From the drop down context menu, pick Fixed Ratio. Set it to 4 horizontal, 3 vertical (for 4:3) and grab as much of the image as possible. Copy and paste into a new image. Resize.

Use 16 horiz 10 vert for 16:10 (widescreen) ratio.

It's pretty simple.

Say you've got a 1920x1200 size and you want to size it to 1600x1200. In this case, you'd want to just crop off 320 pixels from the width (160px on each side, probably)

If you want to go to like, 1280x960, then go to your resize and set the height to 960, and let it adjust the width for you so that it maintains aspect ratio. After you resize it, then crop off the sides so that your width is 1280.

Edit: Ok wow, Wizard's method is much easier.

Really nice idea, love it. Be interested to see another version with a lambda instead of a giant 2 perhaps.

So is this one @ 1024x768 correct?

Looks it. When doing original designs in Photoshop, always remember to start with a bigger canvas than you think will be necessary, because you have a lot more freedom when it comes down to resizing for different aspect ratios.

Yeah my main canvas is 2560x1600.

edit: Ok, I updated my original post with what I think are the correct AR's.

If you or anyone can find me a really big picture of the HL2 lambda logo then I'll do it.

How big could you possibly need it? It's a simple shape made up of straight lines. You could use any source picture to easily create an accurate vector path from it.

You don't even need to vector it if you're just using it as a map to fit text in it.

Yeah, that's true. And it doesn't even need to be big enough because even if you have to scale it up you can still tell what the shape is and where the boundaries are.

The path could be a cleaner guideline though.

True, didn't really think much of that.

Woah, that's pretty cool. Nice job.

Edit: You didn't fix Pi's name ;o

very cool, but i'm finding the angle of things such as 'the cake is a lie', opposing force' and 'sulkdodds' quite jarring and now i can't unsee them. i think some of the direction should be changed, as in having the letters all moving in direction instead of changing the angle for some words so that they fit making the O more rounded. it would require shifting and resizing a fair amount, but then that's how it's made up anyway.

but otherwise, very cool. loving the colours (on both, actually. deffo prefer the second as a more resolved image, though)

typography is something i'm really looking forward to learning more about in year two of illustration. i pop my head into the graphics studio every now and again and it's all they seem to be doing, but then that's a stereotype ooooohhhhh!

Yeah you def messed up the bottom part of the circle. Also get rid of the outer glow on the big text, as well as probably the gradient.

You need better alignment for text on the lambda, its all very crooked.

A++ idea and design, though. Great lighting and background texture.

That looks cool. :D

And I saw my name. :O

Update: Cleaned up (tried to at least) the edge AND, I added as many members as I could.

snip

hm, i still think having the words moving in one direction (left to right, if you will) provides a better finish. the majority of your type already does this, so i see no reason for it to start curving upwards in the bottom right hand corner of the circle as opposed to how it moves lateral to the right in the top left.

but yeah, looking good.

Yay,I'm in there this time! It's hard to see, but it's right above the word HUNTER.

The only thing wrong with it is that one of the lines in the lambda, the one going down towards raziaar, is at a bad angle. Also, your name isn't in it? :(
BTW it looks very nice and clean, I like it.

EDIT: Actually now that I look at it closer, it seems like if you changed anything in the lambda it might look weird.

Looking good, but you still haven't fixed Pi Mu Rho's name. Also, please make the final version available in .png please. Makes for nicer gradients and less artifacts.
