I think if Valve did actually maintain a newsworthy and regularly updated site a lot of us would be going there actually. But it's pretty unnecessary considering how much community support they recieve, and so this is how it is, so I guess they feel no need to go and change the way their internet community support works this late in the development process.

It's ancient news that they scrapped that ages ago due to the massive amount of server calculations required for physics etc

Doom 3 has Physics?
