HL2 on Directx 7

tbh, dx8 looks real nice, really, dx9 is just wow stuff tbh.

Bandwidth exceeded. BTW, those FPS don't help him at all. You're card is way better than his, so of course running at a different version of DX is going to make yours perform better. Oh, and why are you people putting down Doom 3? It has some of the most amazing optimization I've seen to date for a PC game. I saw some people running it on a Voodoo 5! Sure, it looked horrible, but they were getting 30 FPS. In your eye...

I'd hafta agree they have done a really good job optimizing doom3... i wouldn't be surprised if it ran better on old systems than hl2 does :-O

carmack is really good at programming and cleaning stuff up

btw, if anyone is wondering, the quality you see in the binks doesn't even make dx8 quality, even though its using dx9, its just the quality used to compress the binks.

I know all of you prolly have bought your 1337 DX9 video cards, but I plan to be palying HL2 in DX7 with my 32meg card, so what i want to know is are there any screenshots of exactly what DX7 HL@ will look like with no shaders and bump mapping, and reflective water? Also, I could find benchmarks for different cards in DX8 and DX9 modes and the cards ran much faster in DX8, is it safe to assume that my card will run even faster (relative to its crappy performance of course :p) in DX7?. I ahve 32meg mobile ATI radeon 9000 with 128 meg AGP bus which defaults to DX7 in HL2 according to the article that also says GF4 FX cards default to DX8. It gets 4800 in 3DMark2001 at 1024x768x32 if that helps yall out as well.

Anyways thx for yout time, plz dont just post to make fun of my computer :frown: .

Well, I believe that Unreal Tournament used DX7, so it would be satisfactory (even for me, sometimes :))

does dx8 have a notable difference when compared to dx9? the pics posted here didn't really show much of the water

The ATI Radeon 9000 defaults to DirectX 7??? The 9000 is a DirectX 8.1 card..I would've been sure that Valve would make sure it ran in 8 and not 7

okies, i got the following

P4 2.4ghzc o/c to 3.06
1024mb DDR 400
Gf4 ti4600 (MSI ONE :bounce: ) overclocked around 20mhz on core and memory.

Currently getting a figure of anywhere from 59.96 to 62.1 FPS in stress. Obvously its a DX 8.1 card, and well its running at Dx 8.0, but its just eye candy. Doom3 Rapes hell outta my card, i dont think ID thought of anything sub x800 lol. ive done some major tweaking in Doom3 (because i really wanted to keep the shadows) and now get 60fps, and around 30 in a firefight with some baddies. :borg:

Regarding dx9.0.... all i gotta say

MEH!! lol, it does look better, but not in the range of betterness (<<wtf) between lets say dx7.0 and dx8.0. its more like imHo a dx8.7.

err so where are the beta drivers again??

and i just reinstalled windaz about a week ago and instaled steam first and i got the same results so its not the soft whear i have thats slowing it down or anything.

to bad unreal dosnt use anything execpt for cube maps :( it would be soo cool with just normal maps or somthing... would it be that hard to add?

Dave, iD optimised the poo out of Doom 3. Chances are, you're running the game at a resolution that you shouldn't be. I'd say 8x6 with low to medium settings are what you should be using...
