will hl2 ship on dvd? farcry came with 5 cds, something that could have easily have been remedied with a dvd.

btw, this is my first post on hl2.net, and i tried unsuccessfully to search the forums. if someone could at least direct me to a link that features an answer to this question. i went through all the questions that people have emailed to valve that have been posted here.

Thanks,
Adidajs

FC did came with a DVD edtion. i.e. in Europe it was DVD-only.

HL2 will rpolly follow its steps

ja, and i was sorely disappointed i didn't know about that before, but i probably wouldn't have done anything about it. i wasn't really waiting for farcry. hl2 is something i've been waiting for. i would wait longer if i knew hl2 will be on dvd eventually.

i guess most people won't even bother getting it at a store since they can just d/l from steam, but i want it physically in my hands (hopefully in dvd format).

Yes, there will be a Special Edition of Half-Life 2 that comes on a DVD.

Wow, 5 CD's...I didn't think about that. (Because living in England i of course only saw the DVD)

That point about steam though....There are a lot of people who don't even have Steam for one reason or another. Then there are those who don't trust it enough and only have it because its the only way forward...and of course there are people like me who just want their hands on the box :)

Was UT2004 DVD only in the UK only as well. I bought the DVD version but I haven't seen the CD version.

If two of the top games this year have been on DVD in the UK, this means that other games will follow in its footsteps.

does sierra/vivendi have a HQ in the UK, if they do, its most likely that HL2 will be another DVD only game in the UK, regardless whether or not its a special edition

UT2k4 had the DVD version here in the US as well thankfully.

It's interesting that not so long ago people were having arguments about the transfer over the DVD, and the marketing of DVD only games.

Heh. I remember when I hated DVDs, I got the first American Pie on DVD for christmas back whenever it was released and wanted to exchange it for a VHS copy. How times have changed...

Yeah, I'd be surprised if the only DVD version of HL2 was the Special Edition. I don't particularly want a lot of extras, I'm just after the game. A DVD version will be MUCH more practical then the 5 or 6 discs it will need otherwise.

Yeah...All i want now is mini DVDs with the same amount of space as a normal DVD. It would also be nice if they were in those plastic cases like Mini Discs, it just makes sense.

This isn't really for Rumours and Speculation.

Moved to General Discussion :)

cOOl.

Someone should emaill gabe about it. Ask him to release it on DVD.

is it cheap On DVD than CDs for valve ?

Im sure there will be a dvd version though, they may not have details about the specifics untill the month of release, also once you have the boxed version, and your cd key is bound to your steam account, you dont neccasarily have to touch the disc ever again!

Imagine downloading the 2 ( or whatever?) gigs through steam...

someone already emailed them. They said special edition would be on DVD only.

I think DVD's are cheaper to make then CD's actually, but are more expensive when you buy them. Go figure. :dozey:

Actually half life2 will only be available via steam and will be sold in retail in the form of Zip Disks.

Damn, gonna buy a DVD player... :flame:

since the dvd holds more they will do 1 dvd as compared to 4 cds......... :cheese:

The UT2k4 Limited Edition came on DVD. The regular version is on 6 CD's, which are sitting on my shelf right now...

All I gotta say is if they do make a DVD special edition version...make it come out the same time as the regular version and make sure they have enough copies made. I don't want to go to the store and find out that the DVD is sold out or the DVD version is only being sold in Europe. Bah!

how much information can a DVD hold?

DVD-5 (SS/SL) 4.38 gig (4.7G) 2+ hours of video
DVD-9 (SS/DL) 7.95 gig (8.5G) around 4 hours of video
DVD-10 (DS/SL) 8.75 gig (9.4G) around 4.5 hours of video
DVD-14 (DS/ML) 12.33 gig (13.24G) 6.5 hours of video
DVD-18 (DS/DL) 15.90 gig (17G) 8+ hours of video
DVD-RAM (SS/SL) 2.40 gig (2.58G)
DVD-RAM (DS/SL) 4.80 gig (5.16G)

CD-ROM media hold around 650 MB

In Australia, Far Cry comes on both DVD and CD. I personally would like to see the normal game come on DVD as well, but hopefully I'll have enough for the Special Edition :)

it had better  I was very disapointed that farcry in north america had NO dvd version :/

hopefully the dvd SE comes in that metal looking Half life 2 box (from the screenshots those students took on a trip there)

Wow, someone from Gainesville. I'm not the only HL2 fan in central Florida after all! But like most of you, I really want that DVD version as well.

id like it on DVD. i hate installing from 4-5 cd's and having to swap em all the time. plus with dvd drives so cheap now ppl can upgrade.

RE: Obsidian.
I recently bought a DVD burner (to replace a dead cd burner AND an old DVD drive) for $92. That's a mere 9 hours of work for many people. (And less for some of us.)

i guess i'll be the rotten egg in this bunch....

i myself do not have a computer that is equiped with a digital video player and with my funs deterierating to a spec from planning to buy a new graphics card and wanting to get the game when it first comes out i'm insanely glad that the standard versions of half life2 will not be in dvd format and will run on my computer, if the standard sp/mp version was in a dvd disc i would most likely commit suicide

the only ppl who would be able to affoard one would be kids that arent working. but even then, a game is at least twice as much as the drive.

Damn... shopping list is now:

New video card (as good as i can afford)

DvD drive

Special edition (there's no way i'll settle for any less)

Come on someone... give me a damn job!!

I'm seriously considering getting a DVD drive just for the Half-Life 2 special edition.

Does any other europeans find it funny that certain games weren't available on DVD in the States? I thought you guys were supposed to have everything.

Viva le difference!

I think HL2 will come on DVD...the last 2 big games i've bought came on DVD format (FarCry UT2004) and boy was i glad...6 cd's for UT :O

Installing from multiple CDs isn't that big of a deal. After the initial install, you never have to touch the CDs again (except for the play disc, of course). I'm interested in the special edition not because it's on DVD but because of the extra content that will be included. Rumor has it we'll get a Half-Life 2 t-shirt, a behind the scenes DVD, and possibly the original Half-Life ported to the Source engine.

I think gabe already stated that the special edition was going to be DVD.

Hey, if FarCry was only released on DVD in england, wtf did people without a dvd drive do? That seems kinda stupid....
