I think it was gabe that said the opening to HL2 would be an homage to the first half-life with riding into City 17 on a train.

That sounds like its gonna be awesome! I can't wait to look out the window at the countryside going by... i bet somebody will be talking on the intercom or someone sitting right next to you.

That'd be awesome... awesome like waffles!

If i was playing Half-Life 2 right now i wouldn't be reading this.

For i am the...

thanks for that gripping mental picture.

I would also be playing hl2... there wouldn't be much of a point to reading 98% of the posts on this forum

waffles are good, but you can't forget about pancakes. I mean cakes in a pan for breakfast!? It doesn't get much better.

On Topic: If you watch..err one of the many video's out now that shows gordan entering city 17 he is constantly being bombarded with audio. You have all the tv screens constantly sending out subversive content to its listeners. I think that could be what Gabe was talking about, because it has the same style to it as the train ride into black masa.

I just think that is doesn't seem "odd" that gordon just waltzes into City 17 wearing a heavily armored bright orange hazard suit and nobody stops him right away

i mean i havn't seen getups like those since the 70s! somebody's bound to ask or beat the crap out of him way before he reaches teh checkpoint

do you think if i play test half life 2 whne i go to valve i will spoil it for me

Yeah that was a cool part of Half-Life 1, it really got you immersed in the environment. I remember after beating the game a couple times, I used console commands in the very beginning to get weapons on the train ride. :smoking: Then I blew away every scientist and security guard I saw along the ride..and used the rocket launcher to blow up that forklift thing.

I can't wait to see the HL2 train ride!

I bet all the landscape will be really hilly and little houses and stuff in the distance and there will be like forests leveled and burned down and places where it looks like a battle was fought and destruction and stuff.

Then gordon should go to the back of the train and try to flush himself down the train-toliet so he can escape the miserable job he has ahead of him.

Well, the lack of an HUD in those videos would suggest to me that he's not wearing it at the start. Besides, they do stop him.
One thing I'm idly wondering about the intro is this: Do you start off in the tram from HL1 with the G-Man doing his "Rise and shine, Mr. Freeman..." bit, and then end up on the tram into City 17. Because otherwise I can't think where that little speech would go. Not very interesting and mind-numbingly unimportant, I know, but I have now succeeded in wasting a small portion of your life and a small portion of mine.

I think that Valve are going to do loads of Deja vu (did i spell that correctly :hmph: ) moments which will make you think back to the original, like launch a rocket into space or do a similar black mesa style experiment thingy, only things that people who have played the orginal will pick up on. :afro:

Maybe I have smoked myself retarted, but wasn't there a movie of Gordon getting his hazard suit in HL2? It was later in the game, so chronologically he woudln't it at that point in the game.

No, there wasn't, it was one of the first things you needed to do in HL1, go and get your hazard suit from the locker rooms, then proceed to "the test chamber" (dun dun duhhhhh!)

I think the game starts with:
"Wisely done Mr Freeman... I will se you up ahead."
*sounds and flashes to indicate dreaming, flashbacks to BMRF, voices, the screen goes bright and...*
"Rise and shine, Mr Freeman... Rise and, shine..."
Then into a train going past a destroyed landscape, deserted houses and a short little slow ride into the city until you arrive at the station.

Yeah it'd be great if there were a whole load of in-jokes :)
Like a Combine saying "Why do we all have to wear these ridiculous masks?" I know that's not going to happen, but you get my point.

Rimmer, I agree with you pretty much down to the letter. It'd kick arse if that's how it happened, but I'm not quite so sure...

I think I might actually get nightmares about the G-Man if I play the game too long

Well the soda machine dispensing cans in the traptown video was an homage of great magnitude!
Oh, burning fish, I had a nightmare about a headcrab attacking the back of my head the other day. I banged my head in the wall I was so scared.

I thought that was made just for the e3 presentations. Afterall, i dont think it'd take them that long to see. Then again, if it was ingame, it would be at the start when Freeman is in Neverland waking up from a long sleep after Blackmesa.
Also, was'nt Uplink Freeman's first mission for the Gman, im sure when i played that, that it said at the start you were working for the Gman... can anyone confirm this? as i cant be bothered to reinstall the old half-life :hmph:

No that is the beginning of the game (although not I doubt it's the very beginning - I imagine there's a bit of the tram ride in, just to get the credits in at the start) as many magazine previews have testified. Besides, it seems far too impressive to be made exclusivley for a single E3 presentation.
No, Uplink was a demo created for Half-Life to show off what the game was like without actually giving away too much about the actual game. I thought it was a fantastic idea, and it was good fun too.

Well, Up-link was created after Half-life.
I think the g-man speech may have been a bit of the beginning of the game, I think he probably says something more.

I'm pretty sure they were totally unrelated, seeing as during Uplink you were still fighting marines (who, by the end of the levels on Earth had all gone) and Xen aliens (who you stopped by destroying Nihilanth, as we know because Xen beasties disappeared some time after seeing Gordon run into the portal, which is when Race-X appeared)
Anyways, I'm downloading it now, so I'll let you know.

I cant wait for thsi game ughhh i think the g man is an alien... LOL

The starting sequence might be with G-Man.Atleast this time we need a G-Man who doesn't piss freeman, by always being ahead of freeman.

Id start the game out with pitch blackness, then a few scrambled voices saying stuff like "body temperature rising, now nominal. Scan in progress," and have these hazy flashes of looking out of a tube and a few scientists working at controles interlaced with blackouts. Kind of like that bit in robo cop but without the HUD. Then have it all black and start the "Rise and shine.." on the train.

Yeah, mixed with some voices from Anamoulous materials.
Just have to point this out: The flashback to the test chamber during the G-man's rise and shine speech is so friggin' cool. That's the kinda flashbacks I want in the start of the game.

I just played Uplink - in the beginning there's no voice from the G-Man, just from the HEV lady. Amongst other things, text coming up on the screen (like "Subject: Freeman, Gordon" etc.) says "Time Since Containment Failure: +48:00 hours" and "Status: Evaluation In Progress"
I doubt, however that has much to do with the G-Man. Doesn't it say that at the beginning of HL anyway?

Come to think of it, after 48 hours +, Gordon should be in Xen at the very least. But Uplink does take place somewhere in or close to the lambda complex so I guess it could add up. I wish VALVe could release a timeline.

There is no retail version for Uplink. Its just a demo version OR a bonus material from Valve.

It'd be cool if it starts out with a flash memory of Gordon talking to the G-man at the end of hl1

Exactly, begin with "I will se you up ahead" and then rise and shine etc...

Now that you've mentioned it, i have a feeling the train ride is gonna be as long as the tram ride in Half Life

I got annoyed by the train ride after I wanted to go back and play the game on medium difficulty...

I remember once I downloaded that Counter-Life mod for HL, and you got all the CS weapons and stuff..I entered in cheat code on the train ride and shot the aliens down near the helicopter with an awp before they killed barney and the scientist. Talk about your [SARCASM]SPOILER[/SARCASM]...

What? The train ride is the most atmospheric part of both HL and BS. And the part following the rides. "Insecurity" and "Anamoulous Materials"

While that may be true the first few times you go through it, it gets boring after you've beaten the game on easy about 4 or 5 times...

I enjoyed the part where Gordon went down that train to the water, and like 50+ headcrabs were falling down...that was awesome...

No. I still enjoy it.

Well jeepers, just make yourself a permanent savegame after the bits you find boring, and start the game from there each time...

I can't help but get excited about the game every single time I hear that familiar voice;
"Welcome, to the Black Mesa, transit system..."
