HL2 Physics compared to MP2

I personally like it in Max Payne 2 when u can hear someone on the other side of the door and you run into it knocking the guy over. In my case the guy fell over a stair railing and fell 4 storeys, needless to say his masked buddy was none too happy to see that.

Half-Life 2 has the same physics engine, yes but with that gravity manipulator gun the interactions you can do with the objects is far greater.
:sniper:

so.....

you havnt left me with much to say here.....
so i wont say it.

Yea that is pretty cool! I'm pretty sure they will have squad mate recognition so you can't snipe a guy and his buddy will just stand there waiting for you to snipe him. In HL1 it was sort of hit or miss with that.

I killed well over half the enemies in the game like that. Here's the forumla:

1) Run in a room and get everyones attention.
2) Backtrack through a door.
3) Wait till you either hear the enemies or can see them clipping through the door.
4) Swing the door open into their face and knock their ass down.
5) Unload and repeat.

The HL2 physics will be better to an extent. VALVe said the heavily modifies the Havok physics angine. Even Havok said they love what VALVe did with it.

Well, if HL2's physics are as good as Max Payne's I will be happy. I think it is totally awesome to be in bullet time while looking through the mp5 scope and watching the bullets leave your gun and hit people in slo mo. I usually aim for the forehead and its awesome when it hits because the guy's head snaps back and a spurt of blood is observed. Also just sending bullet after bullet into his chest in slo mo, watching him jerk, jump, and twist from the impacts.

Physics = teh pwn

ps. anyone ever been lookin through the scope in slo mo and see a bullet come right past you, its friggin cool as, umm, ya know, ice. lol really it is awesome

i dunno HOW "heavily" they modded it.... those physics are ALOT like MP2's

BTW, does ne1 have a link to that test of Havok's physics

I think Half Life 2's have been tweaked heavily to better deal with things like friction and exertion of forces and crap. I don't know too much about physics but HL2's will be better, if only marginally, but where it counts. HL2 is alot deeper than MP2 so you'll notice the physics alot more as well, albeit without slo mo :/ But I'll leave that up to the modders.

one big issue in mp2 is that bodies jitter around on the ground after they're dead, so far i've seen no evidence of that happening in HL2.

Sure I do, i just posted a couple links in another thread for someone looking for the tests. So i'll just paste em here too.

If you just want to play with the physics you can always go here

There's applets that apply the use of the physics engine there.

From the website a brief list of games that use the engine:

i went through the entire game and didn't see 1 jittering spasm seizure bodies. therefore i think rockstar did a good job with the physics...so there.

ps-how come suprnova isnt working right now..lol..i wanna download call of duty and play the sp since i cant buy it until saturday

Geesh, I personally think MP2 rocks my world, but I mean, HL2's been developed for 5 years, and they have even edited the engine (that's their signature move) for their own purposes. I think HL2 will use physics more than MP2 with stealth and the manipulator gun , so I guess they must use a more complicated physics engine.

Although I think MP2's engine does it's job very well for a game like that, wouldn't notice much if the engine was more complex for objects and such. I think it was great that they actually use the Havok 2 engine since I've never got to play with that engine in a way like this without not being able to affect dead bodies or they disappearing (like in Raven shield or Conflict:Desert Storm)

You mean Remedy did a good job with the physics.

Guess I can say my opinion now, as I played MP2 yesterday (got it yesterday, finished it yesterday, urk):

The physics in HL2 will probably be MUCH more noticable than in MP2 (at least, I'm hoping ;)). Its terribly underused. Its obviously no problem with speed (1600x1200 with 6xFSAA/16xAF fully playable, hehe), so they could have used it alot more. As it is now, its just a small 'gimmick'. Push a few bottles around, a little crate here and there, oh, even TWO or THREE crates stacked on each other!!!
Some of the things you would thing could be moved, cant be budged. In a fence, 3/10 planks was physicly there, the rest was in the level. Etc etc etc...
In terms of behaviour they seem very similar though. I... erm... saw a little part of an unknown game also employing Havoc physics at a friends place. And thats all I say about that :)

Its surprising though. You got this fancy pancy physics engine you probably licensed for 100k+ dollars, and it STILL cant handly character to character interaction.

Totally agree with dawdler. The physics in MP2 are more of a novelty than anything.

Yeah good point there, Dawdler. A little 'underkill' , so to speak :) . But with all these mods upcoming , i bet we won't have to worry about that, some mods already allow like infinite number of bullet casings on the ground, very impressive after a firefight to have huge numbers of magazines and shell casings on the ground ;)

Dedalus, whats this deal with Cheese? Can you not send pointless PM's about it to me either, I ain't interested.

What? cheese good... alcohol... goood.... thread....good....
