i just got this today, but im sure someone else knows, or possibly all of you.

Valve are now looking to release HL2 in the autumn, missing the proposed summer deadline...
Responding to forum posts apparently quoting valve sources as hinting the game had gone 'gold', Doug Lombardi clarified the situation:

'That post was erroneous. we are planning to deliver a release candidate to Vivendi later this month [August] and we're hoping to see the product on the shelves this fall, but we do not have a confirmed shipping date at this time.'

OFFICIAL ETA: Autumn [August]

I THINK WE ALL KNOW: October is best bet.

Have you got any more proof, I think your gonna get quized with the "I just got this today"

links, headers, urls etc.? anything?

ok yeah soz. i just read it in the new PCGAMER uk edition, which was why i thought others would've seen it already.

ive said this before but, valve have cried wolf so many times that no one knows if they should believe them or not. how do we know if hl2 is actually being shipped in august or whatever, and how do we know that they're planning to deliver a release candidate to vivendi later this month???

valve have got some questions that should be answered, and to be honest they're turning their backs on us.

yes yes yes they're focusing on getting the game out and have enough on their plate anway, but how long does one simple thread take to write out???? thats all i ask for.

i would say october tbh. i dont see how if the RC is submitted on the 15th of this month that they couldnt get it all done inside a month. i mean its not like they only start making the boxes and stuff once the games gone gold, there surely cant be much to do left other then duplicaton of cds after that. i fail to beleive that it would be a november release, i mean thats like 2 months, in my opinion thats just bullshit or them being extremely lazy. i think october for a release

Its cool to think its October, but yeah, they've given estimates and possible times before. Though maybe, just maybe. This time its real.

I hope so.

zzzzzzz UH WHA? oh...yeah...release dates and all
zzzzzzz

I'll believe it when i see it IN MAH BELLY..erm..hands..

It'll be mid-October. They're releasing it for my birthday. Sorry about the hold-up guys! :)

vivendi are real nice to you aren't they? or perhaps only you will be able to activate your hl2 from steam because it is your bday... (i know you were joking, but i saw lots of those last year)

Yeah, I was joking. But, honestly, a mid-October release seems to make a lot of sense to me, especially if they are on time delivering the RC on the 15th (God willing).

According to recent conversations we've had with Valve's Doug Lombardi, Half-Life 2 will be passed on to publisher Vivendi for final mastering and duplication within days for it's early August target. The official appearance will make store shelves sometime in mid to late September.
Now, i'm going to be as truthful as possible. Doug Lombardi should consider another career. He is the public face of Valve and he continually tarnishes their reputation by feeding people dates for deliverance that are never met. His failure at relationship marketing is amazing, and it's equally amazing that Valve would continue to employ someone so clearly clueless. Granted, other high profile Valve employees do the exact same thing but Doug has no effect on the actual game. He is expendable.

Get rid of him Valve.

I agree. It would save them a lot of headaches and public ridicule if they hired someone that knew what the hell they were doing. Pick me!!

I think we'll se it november, if not that, then december. And if they dare, then we'll see it january, start-january.

But lets sit back, and wait. And then we'll see.

tbh if hl2 gets delayed until january or december, im not gonna even bother buying it...im so pissed off with all the **** that we've had to put up with!!!!!!!!!!

ffs valve!!!! tell US something, and not words that you think we want to hear!!!!!

yeah then if not january, maybe february, at a push, it could be march, april and may might just be the more relaistic otpion though. and i think youd be foolish to rule out june and july. (dont get me started on august and september thoughdude...)

seriously though thanks for narrowng it down for us to a quarter of a year time frame man...

Wow PCGamer and HL radio as sources, that gives me confidence in the info.

ive agreed with you up til this post. dont start crying, and dont lie and say you wont buy the game. you'll buy it if it came out in 2006 and u know it.

So True!

But even if it slipped to 2005, they might release it in January. For example Diablo was released at the beginning of January, and it sold like what, ten billion copies

Ever heard of the saying "Don't shoot the messenger"?

If you think Doug just sends out these messages WITHOUT having some sort of meeting, think again.

It's a group effort to delay!

Exactly who are the people setting deadlines and then consistently not meeting them???

Doug is in a no-win situation if he releases nothing because he is skeptical of the information he sucks, if he releases a deadline he was given and the coders miss it he sucks.

I hope they pay him alot.

i so hope they dont delay it to next year! i know that everyone will Flame everywhere!

it is very unlikely they will delay it to next yr.
I mean valve are sending the finished copy to vivendi (spelling) on the 15th sept. so i think OCT-NOV release

If you people actually read the quote, it says "release candidates". There is a plural there, and it also says by Sept15th, not on.

"We're currently planning to send release candidates to Vivendi by September 15th," he told us

Doug is the marketing manager, the guy in charge of deciding when to communicate with the fans. Gabe and the rest of them don't understand the intracies and importance of customer relationship compared to a guy like Doug who would have learnt about it at University or ....TV..or something.

If they're in a meeting and Gabe is saying "We've gotta to tell people about this new date we have!!!! OMFG "

Doug should have balls to say "Look Gabe, i'm in charge of this sort of thing and knowing our inability to reach dates we should probably just hold off on saying anything!!"

Unless Doug is just a puppet and has no influence on anything...there's no excuse for the way he conducts his work.

ding ding ding ding ding ding WEEEE HAVE A WINNNNNEERRRRRR!

I'm sticking to October for now, unless corrected. It just seems the most realistic to me. No way is it going to be September, and November is a bit of a stretch.

It would definatly have to go gold in the next couple of weeks to meet a possible september release date.

I kinda hope it doesnt come out until Q2 2005. Need to get a PC to play it on to see it in full glory, laptop will run ok but anyway. SO going to get a new AMD64, so may as well wait until they PCI Express.

September ENDS in a 3 weeks. :p I sincerly doubt they'd have enough time to do a worldwide release in September, even if they go gold next week. It will take 2 or 3 weeks minimum to ship everything out around the world.

Haha people actually still think that sep is a possibility there is no way maybe and I say maybe oct. if you wanna look at this realisticly in the real world look towards november....though I wish sep. its just simply not gonna happen people.

I'm waiting for Bloodlines. The "Blur" video was evidence enough that the game will rock. Plus boobies.

CS:S is included with HL2..so how can they release a game when they are stiull beta testing it....hw can they have cd's printed when they are still updating the client?

i said september 24th... that day still sticks for me. wether it's a gold announcement(un, HL2 HAS gone gold(..ready for release), CS:S, the multi-player half of the game has not, IMHO). stop bickering until you CANNOT PLAY THE CS:S BETA ANYMORE...it has already been said that CS:S Beta would be pulled from STEAM when the game was released.

when do you think was the last time they defraged them servers? oh, i forgot that they did a hdd swap in the last few days...nm...

EDIT: it will only take 5 days to print and distribute enough cd's for release...add a day for each cd over 3 it goes in size.

Released, not in production. They could easily beta test CS:S until the game hits store shelves.

whats his prize Bob? :E
on a more serious note i really don't know what to think anymore...i guess just staying open minded and not taking anything too seriously from Valve, be it the release candidates by September 15 or whatever other dates they give out.

this is the best way in that u won't be disappointed whatever happens.

I wouldn't be so hard on ol' Dougy, I'm sure he has his reasons as to why he keeps making these claims, if nothing it keeps people interested. If Valve had just vanished from the public eye after e3 or something, there wouldn't be nearly the interest in the game at this point. You gotta give people something (although they haven't really done that recently). You could argue this saying that it just makes people super pissy about it too though...

Point is, I'm sure it's not all his fault.
Be nice
