HL2 Scandal

HL2 is going to be awesome, but I read a nasty rumour on slashdot saying people that looked at the source code observed that it uses GPL code :O .GPL code is free code, but supposedly you're supposed to make the thing that uses the code free. Valve of course was intending to sell HL2. I hope this is just a bad rumor and that Valve isn't spending these months rewriting code that wasn't supposed to be used. I read this in October, and haven't seen anything else relating to it.

Does anyone know whether this is ture or not?

No offense, but

1. Sounds like a load of bullshit to me, like the "Steam = Spyware" garbadge. I don't believe it.

2. In the future, you should use the Rumors and Speculation forum for things like this.

3. People who are poking around in stolen source code are not in much of a position to make accusations, and in general they are not the most trustworthy people around.

Sorry if I came across as harsh, but this isn't the first "conspiracy theory" we've gotten around here, and that's why we have a forum for this type of thing.

Conspiracy theories may be fun to theorize, but if you are the subject of them it is no fun. First, one person gets a random idea and posts it mostly as joke with no harm intended. Just another what if sort of thing. Next thing you know, everyone flames the subject of the conspiracy theory...and from there it is all down hill.

I've been subject to similar BS before, and it is not fun at all. Every time someone does something great, a lot of people feel it is necessary to cut them down to their level.

For example in my work, I am constantly accused of copying other cars, not building any of the cars, ripping off of some unknown persons ideas, spamming my rating on various sites, etc, etc, etc... Those aren't even the worse ones, but what I'm saying is these things are a huge pain in the ass, and unless you have significant, solid, verifiable fact to support such statements, it is best to leave it alone.
