HL2 sept 30th in US stores ONLY?

Someone sent gabe an email regarding steam and retail release..this was his reply...

It will come out on the same day on Steam world-wide as it comes out in the US in a box.

You start off paying $9.95 per month.

I'm in the UK, so im guessing that means HL2 might not be in the store sept 30th?

If that's the case 7-9 uk time on the 30th september might see a bit of a spike in steam bandwidth. And every other country outside the US for that matter as and when they wake up.

I guess my day off work to buy the boxed version won't happen. Just remote control my home pc to download as much of hl2 as steam will let me and play when I get home.

Much more pointless information than any of you needed there, but hey ho.

I also second that I believe it is a world-wide release. Considering Steam is openly downloaded and supports 7 languages, there is not any reason for it to not be world-wide. Now Retail--that could be another story.

The question is NOT the release date, worldwide or otherwise. The question is wether retail boxed units will be distributed worldwide at that time or wether the only initial option on release day around the world will be via steam whilst in the US there will be the full range of option from day one.

As I said, Im quite positive it will be in retail stores everywhere. Also, as I stated, Canada IS the US basically in terms of mechandise, if they have it there on the 30th in stores, we will too, so im not too worried

UK and I'd prefer a boxed version if and when it's available but providing the steam bandwidth holds up and there is hopefully an option to do a full game install rather than incremental as you play then I have no problems with purchasing over it steam.

i think Gabe said "the same day it is in stores in the US" he was just saying that i don't think he meant it won't be anywhere else other then steam and they have said many times it will be in the stores world wide on the 30th. I do think sometimes people take E-mails from Valve to literally and read to much into them.

Just out of asking what day of the week do games normally come out in the US and Canada? In the UK they tend to hit the shops on a Friday. The 30th is a Tuesday I think. Don't quote me on it though.

p.s. I was about to respond to digital but this is a game forum and not a flame war. All i ask Digital is that you refrain from using the word gay as an insult on these forums, in fact try to avoid insults all round. People will take you more seriously then.

I think a lot of games are in the shops on a friday in UK but they can be any day. I'm sure i have bought games on the day they have come out and it not being a friday

Theres not really a set "game release" day (Unlike DVDs which come out only on Tuesdays) here in Canada, but Ive noticed generally they come either Tuesday or Wednesday. Sept. 30 is a Tuesday so that kinda fits.

I had been under the impression that it would only be in retail stores in the US on Sept. 30th. Has any game ever seen a worldwide simultaneous retail release? Sounds like a big undertaking, even though it's not impossible. Even Gabe's e-mail comment at the beginning of this thread seems to imply to me that on Sept. 30th, it will be something like this:

US: retail box and steam
Everywhere else: steam

But I could be completely wrong, and I don't think it's someting that Valve has clearly stated yet. I guess it doesn't matter to me that much either(cuz I'm in the US), but someone should try to e-mail Gabe for clarification on this.

us only retail for sure.....

It will be US retail for sure on september 30th.....I doubt it will be supplied worldwide in a box on that day....it is too cumbersome, this is probably why the publisher issued a delay since they are not US based....they are french based and they will not be able to get to other countries till later in the year.......but steam will be world-wide...thats a fact....... no game has been released in a boxed version worldwide to every country on the same day.....
