HL2 Single Player gonna suck?

So you've played the beta and have the hide to say that this has spoiled your outlook for the final game?

Well that's your fault for playing the damn beta. You spoiled your own experience. Those levels that you say are dull might not have been so, if you hadn't already played them to death in the UNFINISHED beta...
 
lol doom3 sp better? heh....if it is ill be shocked. (it would be a good shock though, i kinda want doom3 to break out with a good story)

I caught a few scenes in the crappy, stolen beta type thing and even those made me feel like the story was gonna be awesome, and the maps werent even skinned damnit.
 
Doom 3 is has extremely realistic visuals. It's the most realistic plastic I have ever seen.

ill admit ive pld the beta, i cudnt stop myself gettin my hands on it. but this has done nothing to tarnish my views on HL2. i have learnt nothing of the story, if anything the beta has made me even more excited than before i pld it, after playing around with some of the physics and seeing some of the scary as **** enemies in action i cant wait to buy the full product.

Damn, the Alpha Doom3 made me jump out of my skin and it was only a test level.
Ok the two games are very different - but I think Doom3 will do to the FPS genre what HL1 did. The textures in the toilet scene and the lighting are awesome.

But we'll see soon enuff. HL2 should be a percentage better than Max Payne2 but I doubt it will bring anything new to the FPS table this time round apart from better environments and effects.
I think Doom3 will be the nearest we get to a real movie experience for some time to come.

Doom 3 alpha made me laugh.. when you come under that one bridge, and it shifts camera to that demon zombie on the bridge that says "I CAN SMELL YOUR FEAR", I had it really loud, and regardless, I busted out laughing..

I can't see why ANYONE would get jumpy/get freaked out by a game, be it HL2, Doom 3, or anything else..

Yeah, with all the cutscenes and scripted events it will be a "real movie experience" for sure.

I don't believe anyone really cares about the legality or not (well, some might..), but, alot don't want to ruin the game at ALL for themselves, and to those people, hats off to you :) (I personally couldn't resist, and I'm not sorry I've tried it out, makes me want HL2 10x more)

Wishful thinking is a good thing :) I'm hoping it's out by the end of the year.. lol, I got the money in my wallet for HL2, and if the game's announced to be delayed til next year, I'll prolly buy CZ..

Ok, let's bring it back on topic.

I haven't read the rest of the thread but in my opinion HL2 singleplayer will be as good as, or better than the original. I'm still confident in that because I haven't done anything to spoil the hype I've created for it by downloading the illegal version.

If you're going to download a pre-alpha build of the game, for whatever reason, you'd better prepare yourself for a little let down. I've heard that most of the levels are unfinished, there's sounds and models missing, the levels don't transition into one another properly etc. etc. When you were downloading that illegal version you should have prepared yourself for the worst, and thought about whether or not it would be worth it.

That's why, despite even knowing exactly where to get it (don't PM me please) I'm not going to get it. If it was the full game, or worth playing, I'd download it in a shot. 3, 4 gigs, I probably would. But as it's not worth my time, or the fact that I'd spoil it for myself, I just aint gonna.
 
Understandable, I DLed it expecting not alot, since I heard alot of negativity about it being incomplete, and, although it was incomplete, it's still absolutely amazing.

The final product will be incredibly amazing, and, like I said, I can't wait even more than before it spread around the net.

yeah well. Have you seen the videos of it. I thought it looked like plastic for a long time. But when you see it in motion you realise that it is actually very very very good.

A photo looks shinny like plastic. Those screenshots are as near to photos your gona get in a game at the moment. :)

Admittedly, I'm more impressed with the monsters in Doom 3 (except for that spider thing with the head, soo dumb looking), but, IMO, character (human) models look more realistic in HL2..

It's the videos that made me think the same, the screenshots I thought didn't seem too bad. The environments just seem too bulky, like I've said before, like an overdone bump map, everything all rounded and _big_. Whereas HL2 has a more lifelike appearance to it. Granted thats probably the style Doom3 is going for, I mean, Quake and the others have hardly ever been realistic in things like character shape. I guess I just prefer the more realistic approach.

Course, saying that, I loved Doom, and Doom II way more than any of the quake games, will I buy Doom 3? Most likely I will yeah, but HL2 is far better in my mind

Richmond what state? :). If its Indiana I used to live a ways down in Connersville :)
 
Actually yes. In all honesty I prefere the human modells in half life2 to those in DOOM3 from what I have seen. But still. They are astounding.

The most impresive thing about DOOM3 is most definatly the motion. The annimation in the game looks fantastic, I am in awe of how people can create such things. Anyway

I have to go sleep now. But i think we have established that its merlly personal preference when it comes to these two giants.






(PS - I still love HL2 far more, probably because the game story will kick some serious ass. And the multiplayer is likely to be incredible)

Yeah, when all said and done I reckon most of us will buy both games, especially those of us upgrading for HL2 will want to try out the other stuff and see how things look aswell
 
stop dissing doom3 for **** sake. Every other post on pg4 was a diss to doom3. Doom3 looks better than hl2, and imo will be more scary than hl2. Though, hl2 will have a much better story/gameplay and of course the multiplayer and mods...

Anyhow, I think Doom 3 and HL2 will be on par with eachother, where Doom 3 lacks, HL2 won't, and vice versa.. I doubt I'll be buying Doom 3, though.. I don't have alot of cash these days

Of course Doom is gonna be scarier, thats what Doom IS. I'm looking forward to it though, it'll be awesome as, but i reckon, even though doom has a better graphics engine(Dynamic lighting or whatever), the graphics in Half Life 2, look more real. And the physics in HL2 will be twice that of Doom. Have you seen the E3 movie of Doom? The physics look dodgy, a zombie pops up from the grating and the grating jumps around everywhere and doesn't settle for about 5 seconds.

Im not ragging on Doom. It'll be awesome. But HL2 will be better.

P.S I hope someone makes a System Shock 2 (or System Shock) mod for Doom 3. That will be freakin awesome

wesisapie has a point, if you download mp3s, you are a bad person so you might as well get other illegal things lol

And by years ahead, you mean "Like plastice dolls, or Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within," right? Seriously, Doom III is impresive, but it looks fake. The only thing I find more advanced, is the lighting engine. The polygond counts are low, there can only be some many models on screen - thanks to the overhead room needed for the engine itself. Where Hl2 uses a more subtle, and relistic bump-mapping style. Along with specular bump-mapping, and high-polygon counts. Hl2's character average is 5,000+, and the expressive charcter - Gman, Kleiner, Alyx - count is roughly 7,500. Trust me, Hl2 will own.

You'll notice in various interviews that Half-Life 2 looks the way it does because during the design process they realised they needed to find a balance between graphical accuracy and realism.
I know you may think they are one and the same, but the valve team noticed that if everything is modelled accurately, right through to the wrinkles in skin etc, then the minor flaws and things that can't be dealt with technology at this point, become more obvious and jarring to the eye.

(for example if you saw a person walking down the street looking totally real except he had a clump of black on his head instead of individual strands of hair, and his skin was too reflective, it'd look completely wrong)

It seems to me that iD haven't realised this yet. But that's fine because it's not meant to be realistic, and all that shininess will look beautiful and you'll be able to tell your graphics card is doing something....
All I can say is that, looking at the videos, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were watching a film when playing Hl2, it has that type of gritty realism and "feel" to it.

Damn I'm making myself want this game eve more...
 
hmmmm....actually i think that having played the beta has made me even more anxious for the game to come out. i realize that the game was going to be the best before all this crap and now i have something to look forward to. i tell myself that the game is going to be like a billion times better than this crap and that this crap is actually kind of fun to mill around with.

I agree also that there exists the possibility that HL2 will suck when it's released. I think the same about Doom 3. In both cases, they are trying to sell a game engine, not a game. I just hope that there are some elements of fun in the gameplay, nonetheless.
