HL2 Story, my theory.

Where did the combine come from?
If you played HL1 you will remember an event in the begining where gordon goes into a portal and gets warped into another world. It seems that the scientists did not expect the portals range to be that great and therefore used a lot of power causing this. Because of that the combine could have recorded the high energy beam and became interested of where it came from. When they arrived to earth they saw the conditions and believed that earth could be used as another place to live. Why would they need more place? I sort of explain it in the next question.
What happened to USA?
As the evens oh hl1 happened the combine were recording data about earth. Seeing the technology and the nations they decided would be the bigest thread to them. Therefore they anhilated it totaly by (maybe) a huge laser which destoryed everything and only water remained. After that they launched a head building into the middle of europe from which it grew and created room for the combine to exist in. As you can see the building is huge and tall. Im guessing cause of that the combine is short on space on their home planet and therefore build building to be high and compact.
Where was Gordon all this time the combine taking over? POSSIBLE SPOILER
If you played the beta, at one point Alex (i forgot her name, the daughter), looks at a wall, and says that Gordon looks very familiar to the guy on the wall. She then explains that he had many great ideas and theories and he is the one who helped europe try to defend itself. As you meet the doctor he is surprised that you are alive, barney is also surpised. The doctor is much older and has a daugher, so im guessing about 20 years have passed. So where has gordon been? At the end of HL1 the G-man gives gordon a job to work for him. Im guessing that G-man knew about the combine and therefore started the lab taht researched teleportation. The g man could have believed that this would aid the human race against the combine. However he had no idea they would stubmle upon xan. Infact the xan being teleported were not atacking the black mesa, they were scared to death and were trying to defend themselves. Later on the gman could have comprimised the xan and they turned against the combine. Gordon was accidental, so the gman recruited and trained him in some area in which gordon did not age.

Questions, comments, idea? Post them, i would love to have them discussed :D

Moved to rumors and speculation.

Sorry about Master Chiefer, he has now been banned.

P... oo... n?

That's a new one.

And I think that the guy in those posters I've been hearing about is Lenin. Does he look like Gordy? Picture of Lenin, anyone?

Seeya.

Dammit I wish I hadnt played the beta, I can confirm some of what you said is very correct.

i didn't know that there where two alien races...
is the combine in opposing force? i remember the guys from xen but i dont know the combine...

The headcrabs and combine fight if you get them together...

From what I can tell, the settings, the combine, the way the earth has gone to hell (mostly from the vids and legit screenshots) I think the storyline is more along the lines of 1984 and Big Brother (not the reality TV show :) only with some alien race in league with a few humans who've become traitors to their own race in the hopes of being kings (the usual motive in stories like that heh) and a bunch of them probably got experimented on and became combine warrors or something, or maybe their just normal humans under those masks? Maybe in the beginning of whatever war started this, the combine guards were good guys, defending the Earth, only the one in charge of them sold out and turned his troops on his own people.. A bit too much starwarsy but not such a bad thing when done well

I get the impression, from the ending of HL1 that Gordon was perhaps placed in some sort of suspended animation and only brought out when he was needed by the gman and that I'm guessing the gman this time round isn't so much the bad guy, still a bad guy but his plans are better than the combine which seems to have enslaved the human race, or a good chunk of it. I would suggest reading 1984 / Big Brother as the story is very good and the whole look of things in the E3 vids and images just looks a lot like how the book and film imagined the future. Big Brother being "something" thats controling it all and having the humans do the dirty work. I think dot|hack has a point about the Xen aliens, there's a few interesting clues in the official stuff that hints they could be the good guys now. It's weird, I always thought that mod that mentioned the other race was just a bit of fun, but it seems to hold a lot of water.. I might go play it again, see if there's any other secrets hidden away in there :)

I've purposely avoided mentioning anything from the stolen playable version. The above can be worked out by just the legit stuff on the net

wasnt there already two races of alien, the Xen (well the ones from hl1, dont know their name) and Race-X, who appeared at BMRF after gordon went to xen?
IIRC

IIRC

you mean those shock troops that turned up in Opposing Force among other new ones? I dunno, I always assumed they were the same race only more geared up for fighting back

hmm, got me thinking now :)

hmm also the headcrabs appear to be atacking anything in site... Somethng like criminals on our world.

i'm lost..
combine..
xen..
race x..

i thought race x was xen..

My theory:

Xenians (or Xen): Slave inhabitants of the world known as Xen, along with wildlife from the same place (headcrabs attack anything because they are aggressive little parasitic freaks. And thick as a brick sandwich). Directed by a gigantic being known as "Nihilanth". They were just defending themselves from the humans (or thought they were) when they "attacked" BMRF. Remember, apparently the humans of BM were kidnapping Vortigaunts and nicking things before there were any hostilities.

Race-X: Don't know who they were, but they weren't Xenians, although they may have come from the same place. They reminded me of opportunists. They were more militant than the Xenians. Only the Xenian Grunts seemed particularly geared to war to me. Whereas with Race-X, you had:

:) The Pit Drones: Swarm troops.
:) The Shock-troopers: self explanatory. Carried "Shock Roaches".
:) The Voltigores: Heavy weapon platforms.

The combine, I think, may be human-alien hybrids. Remember that the prowler, which PC-Gamer said "seems to alloy human and alien genetic traits" is a combine creature.

I think that the G-man was and maybe still is, aligned with the rulers of Xen, the beings who were controlling Nihilanth and the Xenians.

Let me know your thoughts, and if I left anything out.

Seeya.

You forgot the baby voltigores (who cam from eggs, the first time i saw them it reminded me of jurassic park, u no when they find the dinosaurs eggs)

Anyways i think Xenians and Race-X are at war, remember nihi saying : i am the last? probably the last ruler of the xenians (he think hes like the xenian overmind  ) so the alien allies we have in hl2 are probably xenians, fighting against race X IMHO

:afro:

?: and i just tought about it, did we ever get any proof the aliens, xenians and race-x, wanted to attack or invade earth? i dont think so, they were probably just as lost , affraid and agressive as the Helmets were when they first went to the border world, xen.

Well, I think that the Xenians and Race-X certainly don't like each other. I think they fight each other if they meet in-game. Proof of an attack (Counterattack in the Xenians case) is: The Nihilanth was purposely holding the dimensional rift from Xen open. and as for the Race-X, they were moving that huge creature that looked a bit like an evolved form of tentacle into the BMRF through a giant stable portal (in OP4).

I still think the xenians were just defending themselves, the first helmet teams went to the border world, took some samples (probably living) the xenians reacted as any other human would, they retaliated.
The xenians were probably doing the same thing, sending troops to BMRF to know more about earth and its inabitants
As for race X, they are probably more 'agressive'

IMHO

Yeah, I agree, the Xenians were retaliating. They certainly seem to have known *nothing* about earth at first.

As for the Race-X being more agressive, well they certainly had the species that seemed the most geared to fighting.

The first set of teleportations during the cascade were probably unplanned, as most things that came through were randomly-placed Xenian wildlife and Vortigaunts. No Xenian Grunts or Race-X.

My ideas anyway.

True, True

Then why did we have to go kill Nihi?

And in the end of hl1 , where do the soldiers in xen come from? did they try to take over xen? or are were like "between" xen and earth?

We had to kill Nihilanth because he was holding the portal between worlds open. I think he just got really pissed off at us...

Hey, wild speculation here, but if Nihilanth was the last ruler of the Xenians, perhaps Race-X were hunting him, so he held the portal open in a desparate attempt to try to get himself and his subjects to Earth?

And I think that the G-Man may have engineered the entire disaster with the express intent of eventually getting the marines to take over Xen. At one point we even see a tank on Xen, so the Marines must have found/been given a way to transport large objects. The only ones that I know capable of that are the Race-X, who were teleporting a giant creature (that I have heard referred to as a "Gene Worm") into BMRF through a giant, stable portal; and the G-Man himself, who seems to have some strange control over space and time (plus the ability to teleport himself). It's just another thing which makes me think that the G-Man isn't actually human, and may even be aligned with Race-X.

Just my .5 cents.:E

okay thats really plausible, except that G-man was satisfed(?) when nihilianth got killed, and he was too when the tentancle was killed in op4

Anyways he was trying to nuke the BMRF, probably to stop the alien invasion(despite the fact he knew weeks before it would happen, read adrian journal in op4, the gman came to get him i think 2 week before the accident)

Perhaps the G-Man is the first combine that we've met, then. Not Race-X or Xen.

YEA! thats possible!

but isnt gordon on the side of gman? why would he want us to kill the combines if he is one?
(im really starting to think he is a combine:borg: )

We don't know at what point in HL2 we start killing combines. Perhaps the G-Man betrays us, or we find out that he and the combine have nasty intentions. Remember, in the little trailer demo we can see that Gordon is wandering through the city without any of the combine attacking him.

trailer demo? what, where, how and when? :)

or is it something I've already seen and just don't remember

The trailer demo's the little short one from e3, the one with the cool thumpy music. Goes for about a minute, and shows us City 17, Alex's face, the scene with the Hydras, a shot of Strider movement, and a view of the docks with a zombie throwing a barrel at you. But not in that order.

Due to my 56k connection, it's the only one I've been able to download.

In the e3 vid, we see combine attacking gordon twice, when they kick the door and in the barricade video (the one with barney)

Exactly. They start out leaving him alone, then they get the command to search and destroy. Or something. Whew, it's late here.

ok, so "someone" gave the combine the order to attack gordon...

but who?;(

you said they start out leaving him alone, thats not shown in the E3 vids. Unless you mean some other clip that wasn't shown in the full E3 vid. If there's another official vid going about with a different clip in it I wouldn't mind seeing it :)

The grinding gates eat the city which is used to make the black building taller, god knows what its for though.

It's just a short little trailer. I can't remember where I got it from. It's kinda blurry, but there's a scene in it where Gordon is wandering around an open area in City 17, and you can see combine standing around, lining people up, and frisking them, for some reason.

I hope we get the music from the trailer in the actual game. Binga Binga Binga Booma CHING!

I reckon it's the G-man. Gordon does something he doesn't like, so he terminates Gordy's employment...

maybe, but isnt g-man and the administrator suposed to be two different person?

wow this forum has helped me out like a ton about hl2 and what the stor might or might not be
