I inserted Disk 1, and the HL2 splash screen popped up, right? I clicked on "Install Half-Life 2" (or something like that) and it gave me this error message before it even loaded:

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

Now, WTF should I do? I really want to play this game; I actually spent $54.99 + tax on it, which I wouldn't spend on any other game I know of. And this is the reward I get after possibly the most hectic week I ever had: 3 all-nighters with homework, tests, and 2 projects.

Some notes:
-This is my parents' computer. Mine sucks so badly it chops with Unreal Tournament 99, so I have to use theirs to play any recent game.

-My dad's the administrator on that comp; he's also the most unreasonable person I know of (after this week of all-nighters he still had the nerve to call me a slacker).

-When I was trying to install it, my mom's web design project were on it, and I didn't want to mess them up so I tried to install it with Frontpage, Photoshop, and 2 IEs up. Dunno if that's the problem.

-My parents' comp specs: Pentium 4 ~2.5 Ghz, 128 MB GeForce 4 Ti800, 512 RAM, Windows XP Professional; let's say UT2004 runs on it without many problems

Please help! Thanks a whole lot.

Extra note: Their computer doesn't have Service Pack 2(they say it gives them problems). I'm planning to install it when they're not using it, then install HL2, then uninstall SP2, but SP2 takes ages to install and so I don't know the next time I'll have the chance to do it.

It's a rough life, kid.

You should restart the computer and try installing with no apps up. Win SP2 shouldn't matter (it DOES cause problems, I find).

I would also try to figure out a way to take over your parents' brains until you graduate and move out. Then you could get your dad to do your homework while your mom installs Half-Life 2 on your brand new computer :)
