HL2Studio : HL2 Studio is a Half-Life 2 GCF File viewer, It's also a Valve GCF File extractor. More importantly HL2Studio is able to view and listen to WAV sound,MP3 music, view VTF( Valve Texture File ) images, and text files, all from within the application.

Nice to have something that does it all in one, very useful. Cheers.

Ooh it's almost as good as QUARK was for Half Life.

My only gripe? The x in the top right should shut down the viewer, not minimize to tray.

Thanks all for the comments.. ;) cheers

cz... I'm glad that is all you have to gripe about.. it could have been much worse I suppose!

This is a nice program, however I am having some problems with it;

the scrollbar on the right just doesnt work and there is not one for the files of the GFC's or one in the window to select the drive for the location of my GFC's. Also the single/double clicking is confusing to me, which parts do I double click to show the files for a folder? some folders don't always have the +'s on.

These problems also occur,
4-When using the get directory dialog, visual anomalies occur when double clicking a sub-directory
5-Visual anomalies occur when resizing the main application window

I realise this is an alpha, so I am not complaining at all just trying to help for a great little app.

The UI isn't that great (I prefer just a plain Windows UI, but that's just me). But at least this doesn't require microsoft .crap framework to be installed like gcfscape.

@cremator thanks -- cheers

@switch Ya I think its item 10 of my list that the scrollbar doesn't work.
In fact, they will be my own scrollbars in a future release. And you are right about the single double clicking stuff, I was aware of this, and it will be addressed.

The .net framework is awesome. Makes the life of a developer a whole bunch easier and more productive. The only bad thing about it is that it isn't installed by default.

Fix the bugs and it will be an awesome platform for Valve file viewing and exporting

My main crits were that the scrollbar didn't work, and you have to double click to open a branch in the filetree.

Doesn't work for me at all.

i can't seem to get it to open sub directories, and my hl2 folder isn't installed on c (which isn;t a good thing for hl2 modding )

Doesn't even open for me. Brings up a scrolling DOS window, then shuts down.

@Pi Mu Rho did you install OpenAL ?

what OS are you working on? and what Service pack etc...

what CPU type ?

can you see anything happening in the DOS window? or nothing

Qualify not at all . you see nothing at all , does it show up in the task manager.., and is not visible etc...

I use ASPROTECT to compress the exe and I know that ASPROTECT may conflict with other protection software.

You are the first to make such a claim and I'm curious so I hope you answer the above questions.

@polyguns

you need to double right mouse click on the directory name
to expand a directory on another drive, aanything else won't work

The reason their are no tree branch symbols to show a sub-directory is because I would need to read the root plus at least one dir. or file from each sub-directory to put up the (+) or (-) symbol on the tree.. this will come soon.

Yes, I installed OpenAL.

Win XPSP2, running on an Athlon XP 2800 with 1.2Gb of RAM, and a 9700 Pro.

I get a lot of scrolling text in the DOS window (too fast for me to catch), then it just closes.

Nothing in task manager.

An Athlon hey ... hmmmm

I can't test on AMD because I don't have one , I can make a build
where you type "DEBUG" as a startup parameter , this in turn will
produce a debug file for me .. and will show exactly where you are crashing .

It may very well be OpenAL it is initialized later on in the boot process.

Anyway if you are interested I can post a build that you can try , this will be a perminent addition in the Final release anyway.

hanz

Yeah, I'd happily try that.

Hi Pi Mu,

copy the .exe and overwrite the existing .exe for version 1.4 Pre-Rel installation

run in a DOS box with DEBUG in upper case as a parameter, this will produce a file called stack.log when run, send this file to me.

When you run the exe with this parameter a message box will appear, click ok.

here is the exe:
http://www.armedbandit.com/openmui/download/HL2STUDIO.exe

and send me the result here:
[email protected]

let me know when you have sent it in this thread and I will go get it.

thanks for the help

hanz

Hi Pi Mu,

Will you be able to send me the results of the debug file?

So I can look into this.

It would be much appreciated.

hanz

It's sent - check your mail

Hi Again Pi Mu,

first, thank you for that info..

I wrote the message below but ignore it.. I will simply implement FMOD as an alternate audio lib in the next release..

thanks again!

Would you be willing to run another test..

First I was right It's the OPENAL audio library that causes the crash.

Now if you would be willing, I could make another exe, that will :
1 -allow you to change the audio device.. to DirectX, or Software
2- to turn audio off completely.

to see if you can pass this crash point..

let me know. Either way I will need to come up with some quick fix for this until I can find an alternate audio lib to accompany OpenAL for AMD machines.

Hmm,generally runs okay, nice work. I reckon the UI could do with a little changing; like someone said, maybe just a plain windows style one would be better. Plus the mousewheel directions seem to be reversed when scrolling for me.

I haven't had a thorough poke around everything in HL2 yet, but I haveencountered one problem. Although most all of the sound files seem to work, it crashes whenever I try to open any of GMan's speeches. Kind of creepy.

edit:- just read the previous posts more thoroughly - I'm on an Athlon too. So maybe it's just the openAL thing.

Another bug:

Viewing the .VTF files one by one in 512 by 512 mode can cause a crash.

@ shens what version are you using? , and can you just give a guess at how many images you need to look at before this occured?

It's also possible that their may be one or two images that cause
this problem, not a problem of looking at them one by one.

@Laivasse like I said in my posts some wav files cause openal to crash.. sorry about that nothing I can do until I put FMOD in to replace it.

I'm currently using 1.4. I can usually cause this by clicking on a one or two random .VTFs, sometimes more.

@Shens .. actually its not that, I found the problem.

If you click a *.vtf, then *.vmt, then another *.vtf.. it will crash.

thanks for the help to find that.
